Why was the ambience different on PC than PS & Saga Saturn.

Dunno, probably because it was for windows 95 & 98, which didn't have quite the same capabilities as PS & Sega.

I've actually found that pretty odd & weird. Instead all the levels except 12 & 13 had the peru ambience for a short time, then it would become totally quite, Which was bizzare. Maybe Justin can tell us how this happened. :jmp:

The PS1 and Saturn versions came out first, and had the music. The PC version had the music removed because early CD-ROM formats had problems with changing tracks in-game.

The Peru ambience is included as a normal music track, so it will play when triggered in certain areas and then stop at the end of the track rather than looping like in the PC version. It seems a bit weird and out of place in Atlantis levels. :P

All I remember about the ambience in Atlantis was a constant heart-beat sound in the background :)

It's a hardware limitation. The sounds are stored as normal CDA tracks. In my old PC, a physical wire connected the sound card and the CDROM just to play CDA tracks. Now this cable doesn't exists 'cause Windows uses a driver that reads digitally such tracks and feeds them to the sound system. Tomb Raider I is a MSDOS game so it can't use such facility. The game keeps feeding the sound thru' the "hypothetical wire" to the sound card. As this wire doesn't exist, no sound can be heard.

I remember old ambience sounds present and looping correctly in my old computer... but maybe I'm wrong as it was like 10 years ago :P

my TR1 for PC has all the playstation ambient sounds (for the first 3 levels i think) because i downloaded the TR audio pack for glidos.

but i've got no idea what has been added or what is normal in the PC version.

is the caves level meant to be silent on PC?
