I don't get it... I'm unable to pull up into the smaller opening (see the previous post). Any suggestions?

Okay - here's what you should have done:

Before you grabbed the rope slider, there was a button/switch that you missed using. If you had done so, this would have raised a green trapdoor to the right of the lower shimmy edge, which you are able to pull up on to & assault the gunman (tip: use the Desert Eagle).

But a better (acknowledgements to Prima Guide) move (because it doesn't cause the guard to come out in the first place) is: after pressing the switch, run/jump & grab to reach the ledge above the green trapdoor, pull up to collect a small medi-pack (always useful), back off, hang, release and catch the green trapdoor.
