Windows XP SP2

Breaking 'insecure' applications?

The next Windows XP service pack should make some significant improvements (such as turning the firewall on by default), though IDG News (http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/03/04/HNwindowsxpsp2_1.html) is warning that the pack may have some unprecedented backward compatibility headaches for developers. The service pack will apparently have such an impact that Microsoft is for the first time offering a training course (http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/default.aspx) to accompany it. Tony Goodhew, a product manager in Microsoft's developer group, offers up a somewhat scary quote: "SP2 will break some applications because they are insecure." Our Microsoft forum recently offered an SP2 preview (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8852134~mode=flat?hilite=sp2), and our Security forum not long ago dissected (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,8245375~mode=flat?hilite=SP2) the improved MS firewall.

I'll stick with SP1 until SP2 is sorted with the usual load of fixes. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/bash.gif
