View Full Version : Tomb Raider not looks really inresting
Ok, I never played TR on my computer because there is no opportunity to buy it now for me, but I wached some videos on youtube and the game looking not very intresting and exciting (I mean not very intresting and exciting comparing to such game as TR2 and TR3). Does only find this game worster than most other TR games? I personaly think I like Legend more than it:
1st place (like most) TRAOD
2nd place TR3
3th place TR2
4th place TR4
5th place TR5
6th place TRL
7th place TR1
8th place TRA
I ma not say that it is not feeling lik TR (of course it feels like TR), but I just not find it intresting and chalanging.

Everything needs to be put into perspective. I can still remember the moment I first starting playing the game way back 10 years ago. The amazing graphics, the wonderful ambient sounds and the occasional (quite fitting) music. I still get the same stupendous feeling of awe and anticipation when those doors close behind Lara at the very beginning and one realizes that the great adventure has begun. That has not changed for me even after all these years.
It is still the #1 TR game in my book, no matter what new graphical advances, gimmicks or "moves" are added to the game. It set the standard very high as a game and it will take a colossal effort to topple it from that pedestal.

TR1 is an outright classic and still hold's it's own amongst the current crop of next gen titles. played through TR1 recently and still 10yrs on has not lost any of it's charm, the graphics sound and feel of this fantastic game still give me a great amount of pleasure, at first the game feel's sluggish, but after about 10 minutes your mind is geared to the flow of it all. :D

very well said!!!:jmp:
Indeed I like the points here two peopes made so far - don't judge a game though if you haven't taken control of it.
You really must try it first. A MUST you must.:D
Talk about setting yourself up.....
Personally I'd class it with TR3 as the best in the series. Was the first TR I played so I may be a bit biased but you can't judge a game by watching clips of other people playing it. You'll never know if you don't have a go. What have you got to lose, the game is cheap now anyway?
And rare...it just so happens I see all the TR's available for PS under used games though I have them already...check your local store:D

Oh dear.
The original Tomb Raider may not meet the technological wizardry of the current releases (Anniversary included) but it remains, and will always be the first, the ground breaking original tomb raider and must therefore be respected.
I though TR1 was OK. TR2 was brilliant. TR3-4- No comment. TR5- good. TR AoD- magnificent, minus controls. TRL- Almost the best. TRA- Meh
First try to play it, then poke it if you really dislike. Don't judge a game by videos or others' opinions. TRAOD then can seem a complete junk (it's close to it actually, but still has something worth playing).

That's a provocative statement, but it bears some serious thought. If you took half junk and half masterpiece and put them in a blender what would be the result? Well, junk....
But there are those of us who have an unexplainable fondness and fascination for it.
And then there's Aurimas :D
But back on-topic, I got stuck in TR1 in the Tomb of Qualopec, and stopped, and didn't get back to it. In TRA I grooved on through and I'm really excited to try St. Frances Folly next. TR1 is great, but TRA seems like everything a TR should be.
^ OK. I must say slightly other way: TRAOD is junk as a TR game. If taking term TR not AOD is OK, xcept controls. :)
TR1 is great, but TRA seems like everything a TR should be.
Except the controls also and some stupid moves coughwallruncough :p

^wallrun is ok when you master it my young padawan learner;)
What you like TRL more than TRA Aurimas? That does not make any sense!
To me TRA is among the best games paralel with tr2 and tr4 ;)
IMO TR1 is the best of the bunch, along with TR3 and 4. The level design and atmosphere is unmatched to this day. The graphics are outdated, true, but IMO that doesn't matter at all. It's the gameplay that makes the difference, I think. After all games like Pong, Monkey Island or the first POP are much older than TR1 - their utter brilliance is undisputed, they're still as great to play today as they were when they were released.
I agree with Mona Sax. That's what defines a "classic". You have OK games, you have good games, and you have "classics". A classic is a game which is still great no matter how many years have passed since it was released. Pong, Super Mario Bros, Monkey Island, Prince Of Persia, Doom, Quake, Tomb Raider... will always rock, 'cause they are True Classics.
She's not the first female heroin of computer games, but still. She rocks :D
She's the first female computer heroine with that :tmb: attitude... and look :D

Unexplainable? Ah contraire my friend. It's quite explainable, and I did just that on page one, but I will elaborate here :)
It is an all-encompassing experience that does not attempt to set up another game (sequel). It has an understandable plot, excellent controls (albeit different than all other games at it's inception), imaginative characters (some hilarious in their essence *read Skateboard Kid, Cowboy, etc*), superb level design, tremendous music (more so on the PS), ground-breaking atmosphere set up and amplified by the games use of ambient sounds and creative use of lighting, a lead character that represented a tough, independent female without peer and a game that challenged and thrilled you in every level.
I think that explains it. :D

I'm sorry, but I've got to completely disagree w/ you.

There, I have got to agree :)
I think TR looks very interesting. As do TR3.
I've only got about a quarter of the way through this game, but I have to say I like it a lot. :D
and really, the fact that this forum is so lively 11 years after it was released surely speaks for itself
I think Aurimas is just a secret legend lover, but he's not yet come out of the closet. He's just testing the water with such phrases as 'legend is better than TR:A' and 'I like legend better than TR1'.
;)
What made TR1 really good was the level design...especially in Egypt. You have rooms connected to each other in intricate ways and an underwater tunnel that would link back to the previous level (Obelisk of Khamoon). The graphics still blow my mind.
I would like TR1 a lot more if it ran on my windows vista. :o
I prefer playing TR1 than TRA, the graphics are the only issue which always seem to be quoted. And guess what? TRA didn't even fill that gap....TR1 with updated graphics would have been nice to see. Criminal.

TR1 is THE TR classic, I admit that even though my favorite is TR3. But, to say TRA's graphics aren't excellent is pushing it. I'm always amazed at how realistic the egyptian ruins and tombs look. TRA is the best looking TR game, I think.
The graphics for TR1 are outdated no doubt about it. But, and this is really hard to explain, if you actually played the game when it was first released your experience of those graphics is completely different.
It's like when I look back at 50's monster films and see a man obviously dressed up in a silly stretchy suit and think, "How can anyone have thought that was an alien/demon/creature from a lagoon?!!!" They look completely ridiculous. Yet at the time... people believed.
It's the same with TR1's graphics. Your mind just filled in the gaps. And so what looks like blocky lumps of patterns, felt marvelously real at the time. I was in that temple! I stepped past those plants! A pack of wolves attacked me and I collected precious items whilst being tracked by alien mummies!! etc etc
And for me the actual blockiness added to the ambience. It gave a uniquely surrealistic feel to all areas which just ramped up the believabilty of discovering strange and lost worlds.
The great thing is, because my mind filled in the gaps all those years ago and I experienced (through the graphics and my own imagination) a very real and believable world, I ALWAYS experience TR1 that way now. Infact, I have to look very hard with my modern eyes to see the blockiness and crudeness of the graphics. It still looks and feels awesome and beautiful otherwise. :)
TRI is fabulous. Having played it after TRII and The Last Revelation I think I fell victim to the "poor" graphics and less moves, but I still think it's a wonderful game. It is a classic, as many others have said, and even if it's not my favorite, that's just undeniable to me.
For obvious reasons, TR1 isn't the most technically advanced in the series, but I think that it's atmosphere and level design is unrivalled by any of the other games. I loved TRA, but even that somehow doesn't manage to completely recapture the feeling of the original. And if you get it running under Glidos with the updated textures, it can look amazing too :)
oppostie from you, from vedio and images that i saw(some in tra vs tr1), i believe this game must be amazing 11 years ago, and still is now!;)

I couldn't have said it better myself. No seriously, I couldn't...:D Your statement sums up my feelings about the game to a "T".
Perfectly stated as usual Blackmoor! :tmb:
