View Full Version : Blood Rayne Series

My mate says Blood Rayne is a great series to play, all the gore and blood and nice enemys. I was thinking of starting to play them.
But is it worth buying?
The gore is nice and stomach-grumbling, but if you have a sensitive stomach, there's no way to turn it off. It's also very sexual, and there's a bit of very rude cursing too.
It's 3rd person, like TR.
You'll mostly be inside houses and underground places, but there are a few outside areas that are at night. There are a few sunlight levels, but on those, you'll have to find shadows since she can't bear sunlight or water.
The boss fights are mostly kill, kill and kill in BR1, but most bosses in BR2 require a strategy of some sort. In BR2 there are also "sub-bosses" which are powerful enemies, but don't have any special weapons or something.
There are no real "puzzles" which require brains in any of the games, it's mostly "toss-this-many-guys-into-that-to-thrash-it-and-continue" puzzles.
She moves extremely fast in BR1 but in BR2 even generic enemies can sometimes outrun her. She can also jump as if she was using a turbo pogo stick, but in BR2 that's been a bit tamed. She can, in BR1, break down walls with a special drill-like motion, which also serves as a double jump, and even take off an enemy head if she's lucky! In BR2, though, it's been degraded to a somewhat simple somersault in midair. There's also some acrobatic parts where she climbs on pipes/poles, swings on horizontal poles, and grinds across cables, rails, pipes, et cetera in BR2.
In the two games, Rayne's standard weapons are her dual blades. BR1's arsenal of ranged weapons is quite big, there's rocket launchers, shotguns, dynamite/grenades, submachine guns, and pistols. BR2's ranged arsenal is quite shortened. You'll gain the Carpathian Dragons about halfway through the first level. These "blood guns" gain several powers (Which makes up for all weapons in BR1.) as sub/bosses are defeated. They use blood as ammo. They can be refilled by feeding them with enemy blood. When the ammo is depleted, you can fire a bit more, but they'll draw blood from Rayne herself, but you can't kill her with them by using them like that, it'll refuse to fire when a set limit is reached, the limit depends though. In both games, Rayne will have a harpoon, that, in BR1 can be used to reel in enemies and feed on them, and in BR2 it can be used to pull things/enemies, and to trap enemies.
Her powers are many. Rayne can, in BR2, build upon her standard powers, by defeating sub/bosses. This isn't present in BR1, though. In BR1 she'll gain totally new powers as time goes, instead. In BR1/2, she can slow down time (And herself.) to avoid enemy fire, evade attacks, and generally trick enemies. This is called Dilated Perception. The updated versions of that power in BR2 are Super Speed, which slows down all enemies, but Rayne remains more or less unaffected, and Freeze Time, which stops time, but Rayne can move. The second power, called Aura Vision, is present in BR1/2. In both games, it reveals enemy awareness, health and objectives, and specially in BR2, vampire doors, and climbable objects. The BR2 special updated versions are Ghost Feed, which sends a ghost of Rayne to feed while Rayne herself is killing things, and Enthrall, where Rayne's "ghost" takes over an enemy for a short time, to help Rayne. The third power is called Blood Rage, which is your typical extra-violent-adrenaline-rush where time slows down a bit, (In BR1.) and she goes totally kamikaze on enemies. BR2's Blood Rage is tamed though. It just prevents knockdown and powers up her offense and defense. In BR2 the special updates are called Blood Fury, in which time slows a bit, Rayne remains faster, and she gains super moves to swiftly, but violently, kill her foes. The second special update is Blood Storm, where she creates a tornado to tear enemies apart. And, there's one power which is only in BR1, which allows her to zoom in on enemies like a sniper zoom. (I can't remember the name, long time since I played BR1, sorry. :p)
And that concludes the features of each game, as far as I can remember. :D

I'm more of a 1st person shooter gamer than anything, I tried Oni as my first 3rd person game and was so frustrated from trying to make the adjustment from 1st to 3rd I gave up on that game and 3rd person shooters. That is until BloodRayne was released for the PC. BloodRayne has really great game play from the story to the animations. It still took me some time to get used to the controls but it was fun learning. If not for BloodRayne being so entertaining I might never have picked up Tomb Raider, which BTW AOD was my first Tomb Raider Game despite the fact I go way back in the gaming business.
BloodRayne 2 now that an interesting game. It is so far off the beaten path it's fun if not a little risque. I've worked a little with the modding community on developing tools for this game but there wasn't a lot of backing from Terminal Reality then. I haven't been involved in quite a while. I was able to convert their measly palletted graphics to 32bit but never pursued it.

I didn't think much to the first one. I thought it was lacking in some things. Didn't like how it played. I never played the second one, but from footage etc it does look like a huge improvement.
I'm sure you can pick them both up pretty cheap so you might as well give them a go :)
Oo, SparedLife, can you gimme a linky to the development tools, please? I wanna mod! :p Thanks.
I played the first game and I liked it a lot. I will buy the second one day, it looks great. :)
The first one is great, but the second is better!

I'm sorry but like I said it's been a while since I've been involved. I think a better person to PM would be Fleet.
I still have some information on my site but I can't guarantee you will find anything useful.

If you get involved with modding be sure to post it here. I wouldn't mind keeping up with your progress. I may even dip back into it a little.

So what happened here. Did you give it a try?
even though the graphics in BR2 are super clean and pretty i love the original a lot more. just because i like the story more, the characters, locations, the music is pumping, and it's much darker which is my taste. :)

EDIT: I love going to the dancefloor at Club Strages in BR2 and ignore the bloodfield, turn on all cheats (Except the juggy cheat. It's gross. :vlol:) and slash through endless baddies! :D

My favourite enemy so far :)

Yes it is.
BR is one of my favorite games-- but by personal taste of course.
I think water hurts her because it is considered "pure". It is just one of those things like daylight or a stake to the heart I guess.
