View Full Version : Is ONE ROOM too much to ask??

What if Lara suddenly walked into a room where every platform was a square block. A rift in time and space transports her back to the 90's. Suddenly Lara's movements snap back to the grid for one short, sweet, beautiful moment. I'm just asking for one room. one small room, smack dab in the middle of the game. You wouldn't even have to explain it. once you solved the classic puzzle and come out the other end, Lara would say... "That felt eerily familiar" and the game would continue on as usual business. Then that's it. I would promise never to mention the grid system again for as long as I live!
You could even make it a secret room off the main path, entangled so deeply inside the level that only the most elite tomb raider fan could uncover its mystery. And it would be in perfect alignment with tomb raider's new found self-deprecating humor. I think everyone would get the joke. And those who don't would be so perplexed by this cryptic area that they'd use their tomb raiding skills to investigate the mystery. It would be a tip of the hat to the old games. A hello, good-bye if you will. Oh what magic that would be. It's not as far fetched as it sounds. Prince of persia: s.o.t. offered the entire original game on the disk as a secret unlockable. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me or tell me its a stupid idea. Its just my dream.
That would acknowledge core did something right back then, eidos would never stand for it! :p

that would be really cool!
that wouldnt work. for the simple reason that the game would become...a game. lara is supposed to be real so why would her world turn into blocks? it wouldnt simply ruin the story. its a cool idea but would be impossible to explain.

I'd love for it to be far off the path, so that only the hard core fans could find it. I love it! :tmb:
It would be a fun little "cameo" of the classics. Make it be like there is an invisible platform you can get onto in a normal area and from there jump at a wall and go through it, falling into the secret area.
Would be pretty funny. Cooler than the low-poly Lara costume. lol. I'm also sure CD would have fun building a room like like - no normal maps, no light limitations, never having to smooth out a corner or make some ultra detailed foliage - They could probably build it in an afternoon without having to worry about all the graphical stuff they put into the new games.
I hope they do something like this.
Lara Croft in the holodeck? :p

What if it included an updated Level editor just for that room where you can drag and drop objects and you can easily scale the block heights higher or lower. It could be an unlockable at the end of the game if you found the secret room. Talk about replay value! Then you'd be able to upload your level onto xbox live for others to download. I'm drooling over the possibilities right now.
They had the TR1 Lara in TRA, so it would have been really cool if it was playable like TR1 Lara.
It wasn't TR1-Lara. It was an awful low-poly-version of TRA-Lara with some reminds of TR1-Lara (the hairs for example).

That's only because they didn't have legal rights to use the original model :)
That would be so amazing! But only if it was so far off the main path and so unobvious that only the really experienced TR gamers find it. No white ledges, and the path would end in a blind alley, nowhere else to go, so the few lost fans that have come a cross this path would return back to the main one, seeing as how this one ended with nothing special. But the wall could be accessible, so that the ones that do have the persistence to investigate further, would find a way in. Just please not a "shiny wall" for the grapple or an "icy see-through wall" or a "loose bricks wall" aŽla Legend. Something like the old games, meaning, rarely a few things are obvious.
And the puzzle should be like the old TR4 ones. A real brain teaser that would keep you up all night, just like the old ones. Ah, the good old times....... :(

I'd be willing to give a donation to CD for this. If that's what Eidos needs.

You can't just have the controls change on you in the middle of the game. Would be utterly pointless too. I'm all for nostalgia but some people really need to let go.

Or, along these same lines how about after opening a secret door there would be an entire level based on the old design. The old controls, camera, graphics, moves, you name it. A bonus "old school" level. it could be made by the best of the TRLE community. Perhaps a contest.

That's a great idea. It would have nothing to do with the actual game (so no potential confusion for TR newcomers), it would be a fun secret (maybe an unlockable, I guess a bonus level would be more motivating than outfits) and it would strenghten the community.

The controls change once you hop into a vehicle, so concider classic Lara be a vehicle of her very own. If you feel uncomfortable once you step into this ancient realm, surely you can press roll and run back on your merry little main route. It wont kill anyone and it'll make a few million fans really happy. It's called diversity.

Meh, would make a nice Easter egg I guess.
Wasn't something similar done with Curse of Monkey Island, Guybrush stook his head in an opening and had a glance back at the first game iirc :D
I think this should go into the Croft Manor. I like to have a really big house in the next game, about twice the size as TR3. The TRA house with new stuff like a race track, assault course, huge gardens with small river, and of course a museum. In the museum you could have something like this. On of the rooms in the museum should be for the classics, where inside you find the full room made of blocks and Lara moves like in TR1-5. And of course she needs an artifact room, with every artifact she ever found and took home.

wow the creative juices are really flowing at the forums this week!
What if eidos rereleased the level editor for the purposes of a contest for the best custom level. The creator of the best level would be flown to the crystal dynamics studios where they would work with the official tomb raider team to recreate their level as they wish, with proper level making tools at their disposal and the level would appear in the final game. This contest would sure beat a Lara manican. But I'd still be content with 1 room CD! just one!

I have another even better idea. Why not release CORE's Anniversary as a bonus? Whatever levels are completed, or finish the damn thing! Much better than a simple old school room and far superior to (and pardon me for saying) a TRLE game. Just from a marketing standpoint it would be a way to get the old school holdouts to buy a new game (I know I would in flash!) and finish it. Might require multiple discs, but so what!
All I want is one room... and an extra game engine packed into the game for that one room!
I'd rather have them work harder on new levels and such myself.

i think that's a fantastic idea! i don't think CD would ever include it though
I really love the idea, but I can't see it happening. Le sigh!

Maybe an unlockable room?
A very good idea, but it wouldn't work. Not from a story standpoint, but from a technical standpoint. The grid system and the current engine are two separate engines, and I do believe it would be impossible to merge two engines so only one would be active in one room, and then the rest be a totally different engine.
How about a level designer as a bonus? I've seen it in golf games, where you can layout the terrain, how hilly or flat, where trees are, water holes, how big, how deep, sandtraps, locations, size, weather affects, etc.... ;)

Surely it's possible to make blocks in the new engine (I've seen sharp corners in the games, specifically St. Francis' Folly in TRA). As for Lara's movement, they already have a sort-of classic control system and camera during combat. They'd just have to make that the default control system regardless of whether weapons were drawn, make the walk feature prevent Lara from going off edges, implement a standing jump which would be the size of the Legend jumps, and tell the game not to count a classic-sized running jump unless Lara ran at least the distance of one backwards hop. Oh, and they'd have to implement the 180 degree roll (but I want that anyway during combat at least). These things can probably be done using their current engine. It's my understanding that the reason they didn't do this was a design choice, not because of technical limitations.
Hey - this is a great idea. In TRA we get to play the costume of classic polygon Lara anyway...,
So why not extend that idea further with an unlockable classic polygon level (complete with VERY long jumps, backflips, and reverse twists in the air)?

Lets face it - its not going to happen :(
