Although TRA looks really good but puzzles are really weak (dont hate me i ve played all Tomb Raider games) I am half way through TRA, but comeon what the hell Gorillas and tigers doing in these tombs? (its not safari) plus every step is paved for her, you have to follow the predefined route and puzzles look like exercise rather than adventure. Flooding the whole tomb for small raft was really lame. There arent any surprises like a secret door way, everything is out in open, all you have to do is to find the key.
Bosses are fine but there has to be a difference between DOOM and Tomb Raider. Some new gear like Compass, Binaculars, PDA etcc. I think Last Revelation had the best puzzles.
I think Last Revelations was and still is the best TR game from all. :)

i absolutly agree. i dont think well ever see a tomb raider as good as trlr. it had tombs, cities, epic story, inteligent puzzels and LONG LEVELS... take note CD
TR4 is one of my favorites, too, and I agree that there's a lot of stuff in it any developer could take as inspiration. The story, the puzzles and the level design are good examples, as is the general atmosphere. I think in all of the series, only TR1 and TR3's India levels came close to that pure adventure feeling. The insane length is a strong point, too, but it's something that would probably be impossible to recreate. To start with, it would make the game huge, too huge for most people's HDs and too long for CD to develop in a reasonable period of time (due to the complexity of the new engine). Then it's pretty much impossible to have an intense story that drives the player forward for 30-40+ hours. It worked in TR4 because there, exploration was more important than the story's pace. It sort of was just there, in the background, told during the FMVs, but the story didn't interfere with the actual gameplay and exploration. If CD wanted to do something like that, they'd have to abandon their concept of making the games as cinematic as possible (as evidenced by the free camera, lots of cutscenes and ICs, obvious paths as well as omnipresent stories and motivations).

I never really liked TR4 that much, TR3 was my favourite, but I do think the puzzles were good. I dont think puzzles will ever be as hard as they used to be, mainly because CD are trying to appeal to the 'casual gamer'. Friends of mine who've played tomb raider tend to just use the level skip because the puzzles were too hard, and I'm guessing they couldent really be bothered actually trying to work them out.
I would actually be ecstatic about a Tomb Raider revolving around puzzles. I would kind of like like it to be like Zack and Wikki but with platforming and a little bit of combat. And Tomb Raider doesn't really need to be 30-40 hours long. People underestimate the power of average to short length games. If Crystal could keep it between 15 and 20 hours I'd be okay with that. (Just give us a lot of extras!)
I sadly feel CD lacks the skills to do overly intelligent puzzling. Why else all the easy for kiddie stuff?
Well the puzzles in TRLR were great in my opinion I still remember the "Senet" game I'm not sure abut the name but it's something typical for Egypt long ago people were really playing this game.
And It would be nice if in every city Lara goes to face such things from the different cultures :)

Yep, that's true. I loved how they combined actual Egyptian culture with their own imagination - Senet is a real game (boards and figures were found in several tombs), but unfortunately no detailed manuals or instructions have surfaced. Nobody really knows how to play it, so Core basically invented their own rules.

Today's modern hard drives are gigantic, there is no reason why the game could not be a whole lot more expansive (and I mean a WHOLE lot more). As far as the puzzles are concerned, it's a major portion of what made the games different, challenging and fun. Is more gunfighting, gimmicks and moves the way of the future for Lara? Or will they return to a deeper intellectual level. Time will tell.

Yeah thats what i am talking about creating a game for adult audience, Tomb raider fans are growing old, like me. Although gun fights are fine but i cannot understand the animals, its too tacky now, they can put in some animals and Lara can scare them away with few gun shots but actual battle with Trex and Lions is stupid. Research based game on solving puzzles and finding hidden treasure with Adventure and Action. They can put some action on a Zeppelin, Ocean Liner, Train. And put some more people init, interaction with different people and moving in and out of city etcc.
If it involves killing Z&A during the process I'm all for it! :tmb:

Hey there's an idea. In the next game an evil genius has Zip in a complicated puzzle trap that Lara (you) must solve quickly in order to save his life (I guess the guys not so evil considering...). Zips life is in your hands, don't mess it up (or not)!

Puzzles that you could solve multiple ways would be fun. Say you had to get through a locked stone wall. You could either blow it up with the Rocket launcher you have, climb all the way to the roof to pull a lever or climb up half way, jump backwards and cause a stone chandelier to smash into the door, cracking it.
That would be a fun "puzzle"
Or, as mentioned, the Senet game. Like in Broken Sword 3, to enter into one of the rooms, you have to complete a game, based on those riddles about getting things across a river.

Why on earth would I want to save him? :D
i suggest they hire someone specifically for puzzle making.
& fire Toby Gard, hes not helping. i remeber in the first 2 trailers, there was this puzzle that lara had to break some statue to release a dam, and another puzzle with spinning circle things....and that japan bike sequence used to be amazing (or at least look amazing)....what happened to that?

Amen.
CD should take a look at the puzzles in this game and bare their complexity and difficulty in mind. Same with the traps.
I agree the traps in the last few games were not traps at all.
I mean I loved those timed puzzles when you are running from a giant rock, or when the walls were closing up on both sides, or when you are trying to pass as fast as possible trough a corridor because the floor is falling behind you.
I'm afraid these things will never be back :(

Definitely! :tmb: They should take the core(no pun) ideas of the puzzles and traps from TR4 and just build on it. TR8 could probably outdo TLR in terms of puzzles if that was their approach.

Never say 'never'. :) They're probably browsing this forum right now listing things(like the traps you mentioned) to put in TR8.
BTW, the ones in bold were in Legend and Anniversary. ;)
