For the past few days, I have been messing with Chronicles, Adding the old TR Lara's into the Chronicles levels, Adding outfits made for the TRLE into Chronicles etc.. and in doing so, I have realised what a great game Tomb Raider Chronicles is.

I mean, sure, The story line makes no sense, Why should a game be created to commemorate someone's "Death" but now I realise, What a great set of Levels it has. We discover the origin's or Larson and Pierre, A bigger insight of Lara's Childhood, Its such a great set of levels, I love to play them over and over again.

Anyone else agree?

As an addition, I uploaded a video of my TRC Editing. Enjoy. (Sorry about the Out of Sync Audio)

I agree, Chronicles is a great game, and we get to learn more about Lara's past (*Cough* Anniversary + Legend *cough*) but it's no-where near as good as AOD :D

the edit is cool. i liked the TR2/3 lara model more than the one for TR4/5.

i liked that there are 4 stories in 1 game. tho lara seemed a bit smiley in this one....and in TR4. maybe i jus dont lik the model.

Well said.

People tend to like bashing Chronicles, but when it came out it was really well recieved.
Hell, the official Playstation magazine gave it 10/10!!!

Another classic chapter in all things tomb raider :D

i don't know why some people don't like it

I think it's the locations and story mostly. There wasn't a story about some old myth with related artifacts all over the world like in most TR games.

And the locations in Chronicles weren't really what is should be in a Tomb Raider. One of my favorite location is still TR3 India, I hope something like that ever comes back with modern graphics and gameplay. A big temple hidden in the middle of a jungle, far away from civilisation. Chronicles didn't had something like that.

Rome was a city, without any inhabitants, where you had to fight the most weirdest enemies in the park and in the sewer. Russia was a milatary base and submarine. Black Isle was proberly the most TR-like location, but with Young Lara, no guns, and no artifacts to collect. Last, VCI, was high-tech artifact hunting. And the second level has to be played without weapons for some weird reason, just because Core wanted it that way, there was no logical reason for it.

All the nice tombs, temples, ruins and caves are missing in this game. The features that make the difference between a "Lara Croft" game and a "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" game were missing.

It is a great game,i don't know why some people don't like it:confused:

Well, I'm playing it right now (I'm almost at the end) so it is all very fresh in my memory: I don't like it because I'm not having fun at all.

- First of all, I don't hate the locations but I don't love them either. I think Michiel said it best:

All the nice tombs, temples, ruins and caves are missing in this game. The features that make the difference between a "Lara Croft" game and a "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" game were missing.

- Then there’s the brightness issue: it's always too dark. I can't see a thing and my monitor is at its maximum brightness capacity.

- There are also way too many cut scenes. Some of them are too long. I have nothing against cut scenes, I enjoy them very much but it seemed I spent more times watching the cut scenes than actually playing.

- I miss having a wide range of choice of weaponry.

- I don’t know what they did with the rope swinging feature since TR4 but I couldn’t handle it at all. I had to download savegames, something which didn’t happen in The Last Revelation.

- Not being able to enjoy the Deepsea Dive level whenever the mini-sub was in sight because the game would run very slow and eventually freeze. Same problem in The Old Mill and 13th Floor levels. (I must say, I've never had these sort of issues in any of my games so far.)

- I thought the graphics were terrible compared to the previous ones. Let’s take the sky for instance. I have to say, I don’t remember what the sky looked like in TR4 since it was the very first game I played moving on with TR1/2/3 and now 5. And as I remember, TR3 had a lovely sky or at least one that didn’t strike me as strange.

- Finally another minor detail from my Sold Out copy. It said in the back cover that Lara had new moves and animations including hand-to-hand combat. This is probably a language issue since english is not my first language but reading this made me believe there would be some.. well.. fighting but without weapons: hand-to-hand combat. That’s how I understood it. So I was really looking forward to this new feature when in fact the only so called combat took place in the cut scenes. I was really disappointed.

My overall impression playing Chronicles is that it was made in a hurry. And nothing good comes from haste. However I don't hate it. I think the idea was a good one but the end result could have been way better. It seems like TR5 is one of the first TR games made, not at all what one would expect to come after TR4 (as far as improvement is concerned).

I agree with the above post. I have to mention the levels were also too short and linear. No different to Legend, only in a more box looking environment. Until the end it was ridiculously easy too. The biggest areas you see in this game are dwarfed by some of the medium sized rooms in the first four games. :(

Well, I'm re-playing Chronicled now and so far enjoying every bit of it. My new screen (LG L1970HR with my Radeon 9800 Pro) makes the game look pretty bright (I even ended up reducing the Gamma to make it darker). It run smoothly as all of the other games in the series.

I loved the replaying the Rome episode - having Lara deal with Larson and Pierre. It also feels a lot like TR1 because of the Coliseum.

The U-Boat episode was also pretty cool, loved to look for the secrets again after nearly forgetting all about their locations. The underwater level reminded me a bit of TR2 as well.

My favorite Black Island episode has such an amazing spooky atmosphere. Made me play a lot slower to keep enjoying it.

VCI was also pretty cool - nice combo between Nevada and London in TR3. Zip is a lot funnier in this game - and thankfully not as chatty. Plus, all those stealth moves are also pretty cool and challenging at times.

Overall I'm impressed that even now it takes me half an hour to complete each level - with the good old slow animations, all the hidden secrets and items. Loved the soundtrack and the fantastic colors - only Core could make so appealing.

While it's the shortest game in the classic series -IMO, it far from being bad - quite on the contrary! :tmb:

How did you get Lara to look like that?? Did you use the level editor to do that? It's really cool!

well DUH!
the chronicles is Lara story told by others like the butler, the Father Dunstan and her friend...
they are telling her adventures, so of course it is not a TR:LR continuation!
while they are reviving lara stories, von croy is searching for her in egipt, that's why in the end of chronicles von croy appears with lara backpack

I never would say that TR: Chronicles is a great game. I see that they made it in hurry and we see lack of textures, many bugs and the levels are too short.

It's the worst from all TRs.

Meh, couldn't really enjoy Chronicles. I liked Rome, but the only levels that really stood out were the ones on the island playing as young Lara. I found VCI and the submarine levels annoying. It might be down to the fact that they weren't actually in tombs.

Seriously? I thought the soundtrack was horrible this time round. Most of the new tracks all sounded the same with those damned bongos and were forgetable tunes anyway. The VCI theme was the only unique one of the lot. The better tracks were the recycled ones from Last Revelation and even then they chose some of the worse ones from that game. :(

Matter of opinion, I guess. I liked the soundtrack in all of previous games so it was nice they used those, and the new one were quite suiting to the areas they were used at.

I agree with you.I don't like locations. It's the worst TR game for me.I've never finished it.That stupid cyborg was falling into the hole all the time so I didn't finish it.When I was playing it again it was boring for me and I didn't get to the last level.

I love TR Chronicles. The only part I don't like is the very first level, but past that bit it's fantastic. I love the music and the locations seemed very original for a TR game to me. Very new-concept or something. Anyway there are my two cents!

ehh, chronicles is a fair game. I kind of like it, but there are some things that realy **** me off, like how, throught most of the game, you can't use your weapons, your weapons reset (after each adventure), or you are not advised to use your weapons. Also a tad shorter and buggier than most of cores others. Probably the worst core TR, but its still not bad.

Chronicles is a very good game. I always enjoy replaying it. Because it's not too long and not too short. Not the case of TR3 because it's too long and sometimes boring. The Rome levels for me are the best levels of Chronicles because of Larson and Pierre they are funny. And they remember me TR1.
The VCi levels are cool too and don't know why i like them because it's not tomb raiderish, but i think that the important thing is the challenge of the levels and not the place where you are :D
