View Full Version : Kurtis Spin-Off by other Developer?
Since Crystal and Eidos made it pretty clear they have very little to none interest in Lara's previous timeline (and AOD in particular), why not have them sell rights for the character of Kurtis Trent to Rebellion and let them used the FR engine to create the spin-off Core once planned? This way we get a Core-equal game with a familiar character only this time he would have all the abilities they missed in AOD.
What do you think?
am all for it,.. i was proposing that idea long ago too... i guess it would be a smart move,.... having sales on kurtis name on janary, and sales onlaras on august,.. the whole year eraning money, and no need to worry about overloading the fans with both games,.. after all,.. not every tr fan likes kurtis... still it is a great idea... and for those GROKT members... they wouldnt need to worry... they would just not buy the game...:D

I would be all for a Kurtis spin-off, assuming that Rebellion wanted to do it :D I think it would be really interesting to have Kurtis finish off the AOD story without Lara or do a totally different but equally good story. I'm eager for the sort of immersive, explorable level design that I'm sure would be in the game, so I don't care too much if they have to change the story, character, etc. to avoid copyrite issues.

Well, Rebellion is not owned by Eidos!

the only problem is, who the hell would pay for the rights to a character that contributed to the most gruesome fall of a successful franchise ever. I know you guys are fans and all, but Kurtis just doesn't have a place in the video game world anymore. New characters are born everyday. Why recycle one that just did not work? It's beating a dead horse a little bit dont you think? The only people that could or would ever revive his character are CD and i dont see them doing that for any reason other than pitty.
well i would DO like to see a game coming with a new born character, enigmatic, and with the same abilities krutis did had,.. it doesnt need to be kurtis trent.. perhaps... just a dark haired guy, with a shirugai, and a funny tendence to stay still... telekinetical powers and stuffs like those...
The only reason why anyone could ever want to make a game based on Kurtis is because he is part of the TR franchise, and Tomb Raider sells. There is just no other reason, because as far as heroes go, he is far from anything special. Dark past, fighting demons, supernatural powers - it's not like it hasn't been done before. You can easily invent a new one of his kind if you need to, and it will be way cheaper than paying Eidos for the rights to use him.
So Mr. Trent's only hope of every having a spin-off is because he knows Lara. However, many Tomb Raider fans hate or at least don't like him, and the rest of the population has either forgotten him or remembers that he featured in the worst recieved TR game ever.
This means that in the end, Kurtis could have his spin-off only under one condition: That the guys at Rebellion are huge Kurtis fans and are willing to invest a lot of money in an uncertain project.

That would be great! :cln:
Kurtis was disliked because of his role in TR series along with horrible controls and 1/3 of his actual abilities. As a character he had a lot of potential.
And since Eidos clearly don't want anything to do with him, selling rights for his character isn't that impossible. Why keep something you don't want or need?
If another company uses a new title and a new story - the only people who gonna realize it's the same Kurtis would be the TR fans...the rest won't care who he is as long as the game is fun. And, IMO, an M-Rated game with dark and mature theme would really work for this semi-supernatural character.
I say yes. But it wont really happen <_<. I'm not a fan of Kurtis in TR but having his own game isnt so bad. :)
I'd give it a go, he had an interesting backstory. :tmb:
What Rebellion should do is get the Core team they have bought making an action/adventure game for the next gen consoles asap, whilst the Core name still has some value amongst the gaming press.
They should not have them working with or for Eidos in shape or form (I read somewhere that they were) and they should not have them doing sports or other genres.
Like others have said they don't need Kurtis.
Having said that I would buy the AoD continuation starring Kurtis if it existed. :) I'd also buy a sequel to Project Eden... and infact would LOVE a next gen sequel to Project Eden.

A game made by the former CORE/TR programmers that is in the genre of Tomb Raider. Now that is an interesting idea! I would definitely open up my wallet for that one!

Me too,but not too much for it.

Well, the important question is: Why should another company want to buy it? Especially if they follow your suggestion and have him appear as an inside joke, basically. Inventing a new guy to do that is way cheaper.
Well... they can do anything they like with SPAM, just don't put him in TR anymore :D
Eidos and Crystal Dynamics have not yet said they would completely ignore AOD, perhaps we should wait and see what happens before wanting to sell him off cheap. Certainly nobody in their right mind would want to buy the rights, probably not even his creators after the bad reputation AOD had.

To prove a point. Eidos cancelled their TRAE is decided to stick with Crystal's version. Having a character who once been trashed along with AOD and actually making a good game based on that character would simply prove what a bad move Eidos have done. And give us enjoyable games in good old Core-Style.
Inventing a new character is fine and all, but Kurtis actually had a pretty cool backstory and supposed to have many cool abilities...so why clone his character under another name when you can have the original?

So far, Crystal made it pretty clear the want nothing to do with Core's Lara - which is why the stick to the movies version of the character. So not only the chances of getting AOD sequel/remake are very slim; it even more unlikely they would use his character with the fear of "Oh God what would the critiques say".
While Rebellion or even the new Smiths' company would not fear to get their hands dirty in order to prove Eidos wrong…especially after the TRAE issue.
It does not seem that clear to me, true they have been critical of AOD, but so are most of the fans, even those who like the game. In numerous interviews they have said they would respect the Core games, they have not said anything in the new bio to contradict any of the previous games occurring.
In fact some of the previous adventures were mentioned, for there to be rumour of them they would likely have happened. In Anniversary they gave us hints that Lara was interested in some of the places she would later visit or items she would look for. We have Winston and Zip from previous games and they have acknowledged the existence of Charles Kane from Chronicles.
l will admit to being suspicious about what Crystal Dynamics are going to do about AOD, the game was a serious departure from the direction of the previous games, but the story could still be made to fit by someone who was determined enough. The fact that no one seems to be determined to include it does not mean they will not.
We have seen several familiar AOD scenes redone in Anniversary, perhaps the solution is to simply rewrite the entire story and include it in glimpses, or yes they could just completely ignore it altogether. Even if they make no mention of the AOD story, which as presented in the game was complete, they might still have Kurtis appearing in a future game. l doubt he would be playable, and he would probably look a lot different, but there is a chance.

A cameo appearance in a cut scene, rolling out of Lara's bed then gets dressed and rides away on his bike. ;)
Unless CD is given the go-ahead to make an adult themed game (and I don't mean a gore-fest or sex), then I'd prefer they keep their hands off any thing having to do with AOD.
As for AOD, it may be a lame comparison, but the original Star Trek was once canceled by the producers....and it went on to be one of the most beloved shows of all time--all due to the core following of its fanbase. So, there is still hope, perhaps, for AOD.
Well, Kurtis did look like a different video game Character to me, I can't think of it right off.

I'd play it. ;) I've always thought of Kurtis similarly to Buffy the Vampire Slayer... Lol! It could be called Kurtis the Demon Hunter... Or, maybe not. That title is kind of lame, but you get the idea. :p

i really liked aod and want to see a sequel for it but i'm pretty indifferent to curtis-i don't like him and don't dislike him. so i'm not that bothered really to see a game about him unless lara would be in it:p
...but i'd buy it anyway

I was thinking to these scenes, and hope that you're right. There are definitely some clues reminding AOD. Now, could it be a sign ? I sure hope so. We've been asking for less inconsistences in the plots, so that background stories of each game could be included in the big picture. See Kurtis (as well as Von Croy), or have a mention of him in a future TR game, would be a step in this direction.
Regarding a Spin-Off for Kurtis, I'd buy it in a second. ;)
OMG I SAW A GUY THAT LOOKED JUST LIKE KURTIS ON TV HE TOLE HIS LOOK OMg:cln:

The key word here would be sell off the rights... ;) I'm sure eidos wants too much for that and other companies just aren't that interested in someone else's character. They want their own exclusive star to tie to their own name to. ;)

I want Kurtis to be in TR, I don't think it would be as good without Lara, their chemistry is what I want to see :jmp:
does Eidos even have the rights for Kurtis Trent? i dont think so

Sure they do - Eidos own Core - while they sold all the employees, they still own the developers company so basically they have right to anything ever seen in a TR game.

which is why legend still has core on the boxing ,
Hmm, a Next-gen Kurtis game where Tomb Raider meets Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Sounds really promising. I would buy it in a minute :D
