View Full Version : No standby mode?

I just got this computer from some guy at work because he didn't need it anymore, so I threw in an old video card I had laying around, put xp on it just to have another plaything; but I've encountered something minor that I don't know the answer to. There is no standby mode. I go to "Start", "Turn off Computer" and there is "Standby" which is greyed out so I can't click it, then "Turn Off" and "Restart". Why would Standby be disabled?

The standby greyed out problem is often the result of the video driver or lack thereof.
According to your diagnose report, you're using an old video driver and your display resolution is set incorrectly.

1) Download the latest ATI Catalyst Driver for the Radeon 7200 (http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.html).

2) Uninstall your current video driver. Download the cat uninstaller by clicking on this sentence. (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=1447) Run the cat uninstaller to completely remove all old ATI drivers. Reboot the computer.

3) Install the driver you downloaded in step 1. Reboot as necessary.

4) set your monitor to the correct resolution: either 1280x1024 @85Hz or 1600x1200 @85Hz.

I followed your instructions. Standby is still greyed out. When I installed the video card originally I got the drivers from ATI's website. I don't know why they would have been old. Here is my new report after doing what you suggested.

Hmmmm.....
First of all, what kind of monitor do you have? Is it a flat screen LCD or a big old style CRT monitor? I'm asking b/c it doesn't seem your refresh rate is set properly.

I don't think that's causing the standby problem though.

My only other thoughts are that 1) you don't have APM enabled for your machine. go to start>control panel>Power Options and see if there is an APM tab with a checkbox to enable APM mode.

or 2) you don't have an ACPI compliant BIOS, or the advanced power options are disabled in the BIOS.
Click Start>Run and type in "devmgmt.msc" without quotes.
Click on the plus sign next to the word "computer" at the top of the list and post what it states here in this thread, for example, mine says "ACPI Multiprocessor PC".

I wouldn't get too hung up on the standby thing anyway. I can count on one finger all of the times that I needed standby mode and still have one finger left over.

It is my humble opinion that standby pretty much sucks. Even for laptops. :D

Try the simple way first: go to Control panel > Power management > Power management shemes tab and set "Standby mode in:" to e.g. 20 minutes. Press OK. Reboot. You now should have Standby mode available (if your PC is not in conditions mentioned by The_Terminator) :)

I have a CRT monitor that is only capable of 1280x1024 @60hz

There is no AMP tab.

Also, device manager says "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC"

Power schemes does not have a standby option. Only when to turn off monitor, and hard disks.

Its really not a huge concern of mine; but rather I hate to back down from something I don't know the reason behind.

One more thing, could one of you fellas point me in the right direction to find a utility that I can use to monitor the temperature of my machine, if one is available? I couldn't seem to find one.

I have a CRT monitor that is only capable of 1280x1024 @60hzIt is highly unlikely that this is the case. Your dxdiag report shows that your monitor is capable of 1600x1200 as well.
60Hz on a CRT is bad for your eyes and brain. ;)
Please try the following and let us know what is available:
1) Right click anywhere on your desktop and select properties.
2) go to the settings tab and click on the advanced button.
3) Click on the adapter tab and then click on the List all Modes button.
4) See what options you have for the various resolutions at 32 bit True Color. I'm willing to bet that you can do 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 at 75Hz or 85Hz. 85Hz would be ideal.

This might solve the standby problem as well. I think I've run into this before when servicing a computer for a client.

Please let us know what you find out!

Set "Office/Home Desktop" sheme for your PC then look for Standby option.

Download Motherboard Monitor (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311) to monitor temperature.

To overcome 60Hz limit install the original driver for your monitor, must be on supplied CD.

Actually, I just remembered with the older ATI cards ( I had an 8500 for years) there was a stupid flaw in the catalyst drivers that often didn't allow the correct setting for the monitors whether or not the correct monitor driver was installed.

I can't remember the specific name of the ATI tab, but when you're in the advanced section of the Display Properties dialogue box, there is an ati tab for monitor properties. If the ATI drivers don't automatically figure out the correct monitor settings, which they often didn't in the early radeon days, then set it manually yourself.

Manually set the monitor options to allow max settings of 1600x1200 @85Hz.
If you don't do this in the ATI monitors tab, then even if you change it to 85Hz elsewhere, it will not work, i.e. it'll be stuck at 60Hz.
I can't believe I forgot this!!! I used to tear my hair out over this flaw every time they updated the catalyst drivers!

I wish I could post a screen shot of exactly what I'm talking about.

oh wait: here it is!!!
http://common.packardbell.com/itemnr/instr_atiradeondrivers/ati_monitor1.jpg

You can uncheck the use DDC information box if necessary and then set the maximum allowable settings yourself to allow for proper resolution with 85Hz.

I hope this helps!

To overcome 60Hz limit install the original driver for your monitor, must be on supplied CD.Hi Esconder, even with the correct monitor driver, the old catalyst software used to get stuck in the 60Hz mode. I have experienced this with cards all the way up to the Radeon 9800.

The standard "plug and play monitor" driver often worked fine, but as you wisely suggest, it's better to see if the manufacturer has a driver for the monitor.
I installed the same monitor driver many times over the years that I used the 8500/9800 and it did not solve the problem.

I've had numerous times where after simply unplugging and replugging the VGA cable from the card (while the computer was off and unplugged from the wall) caused the Catalyst control panel to "forget" what monitor was there, and force the display back to 60Hz.
I don't know what it was with those older Catalyst driver versions, but if you don't alter the max monitor settings in the ATI Monitor tab, you won't be able to set the refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

This has been my personal experience with the ATI Catalyst drivers on several computers.

I tried the stuff you suggested to me, and the modes were available to set the resolution to 1600x1200 at 85hz but when I apply those settings my monitor goes black and says "out of frequency"

Hmmmm.... Can you post the exact make and model of your monitor? (i.e. Mitsubishi DiamondPro 2040u)
If you can't see a logo or model number, there is often a tag on the back that states this info along with the year it was manufactured.
Also, it could be that it'll only do 75Hz at 1600x1200.

I would try 1280x1024@85Hz or 1600x1200@75Hz.

Anything is better than the siezure inducing 60Hz!

It is a Gateway EV700, at least thats whats on the front of it. When I set it to 1280x1024 it will only go up to 60hz. When I set it to 1600x1200@85hz, the resolution actually stays at 1280x1024@60hz according to the information in the monitor menu.

Well, your monitor is older and smaller than I thought.
Click on this sentence to learn all about your monitor. (http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7004145/7004145nv.shtml)
At that link are some driver downloads and a specifications chart.
You probably don't even need a driver for that monitor.

It looks like your monitor is only capable of 800x600@85Hz or 1024x768@75Hz.

I personally would try it at 1024x768@85Hz,
if that doesn't work, try it at 1024x768@75Hz.

I wouldn't use it at 1280x1024 though. It really isn't made for that, and at 17" (15.9" viewable) you really wouldn't want it set that high.

Sorry for giving you the run around. I should've asked for the make and model from the get-go.

Poor pitiful me. I guess I'll just have to pony up the cash for a new monitor one of these days. Its ok, this is just my secondary machine anyway. As for the standby issue, its not a big deal. Thanks for your time and effort though. I appreciate it!
