View Full Version : Deletion weary...
I have a free-space issue with my computer (Windows XP). I am deleting things I dont need such as games and things I dont use to free up as much space as possible for it to run faster.
However, I have a few things that I am weary of deleting:
- "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" (36.15mb)
- "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11" (120mb)
- "Viewpoint Media Player" (4.68mb)
- "XP Codec Pack" (4.02 mb)
- "Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer" (3.46mb)
- "Dell Resource CD" (2.73mb)
- "MSXML 4.0 SP2 (2.56mb)
-"HighMAT Extension to Microsoft Windows XP CD Writing Wizard" (2.13mb)
So, as you can see, I dont want to mess anything up and delete anything I need. But I only seem to use (that I know of) Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, and my graphics/sound driver for games ect. I also have QuickTime and Windows Media Player, so Im assuming I dont need Viewpoint Media Player?
I dont know.
I need some guidance.
Thanks people.
You can safely delete those:
- "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" (36.15mb) - upgrade for MS NET 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en) after.
- "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11" (120mb) - upgrade for J2SE RE 6u2 (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) after.
- "Viewpoint Media Player" (4.68mb) - if you have any other player to use.
- "Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer" (3.46mb)
- "Dell Resource CD" (2.73mb)

167.02 Mb will hardly make any difference, unless you have a really-really miniature hard disc drive.

Download and install CCleaner, its vey good for freeing up unused crap and the registry.
I do have a really small hard disc drive... hopefully it will make some sort of difference. It says I have 3% left of free space... lol.
where can I find this download for the CCleaner?
Thank you kind souls
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Simulation posted the link for me when I had problems..its pretty good

Here is an article from I Am Not A Geek on how to delete windows extra junk to free up over 1 gig of hard drive space:
http://articles.networktechs.com/69-p1.php
NOTE: I have done this many times, but you need to proceed with caution. You can really bork your system if you're not careful.
Also, you don't have to delete everything in this article. You can pick and choose which stuff you want to delete.
Read the whole article carefully before proceeding.
It can really help when you have a small hard drive.
One last thing. I recommend AGAINST running the registry cleaner that the article talks about in the last step. It can really mess things up. Just do the deleting and leave the registry alone for now.
After reading this article I can suggest to delete only files in c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\ folder and leave c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ intact.
If you want to clean old junk from the registry SAFELY, use Reg Cleaner (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pa.wood/regcleaner.html) in automatic mode :tmb:
Well the thing is that I dont know exectly what I can delete without borking my computer as you said, Terminator.
Edit: Ok, I did a little cleaning. However, I went to the i386 folder and didnt delete things such as iexplorer because I assuming it was my actual internet explorer? If I were to delete those kinds of files, would things like my internet not work permenantly?
Sorry, I am not so computer challenged as it seems, I just dont want to crack out my system.
Also is the Reg Cleaner program the same sort of thing as the CCleaner or better? I already installed the CCleaner and it seems to be fine for my system... although I dont know if it is making any actual progress with it.
Anyway, you guys on this forum are great. You always are the biggest help.
What would I do without you *hugs*
Reg Cleaner removes obsolete and erratic keys from your Registry, it increases system performance and reliability.

...except when it removes something that it thinks is unecessary, but kinda is. ;)
This version had now flaws ever - for more than 2 years of using on different PCs.

I actually had a poor experience with the jv16 registry cleaner.
The only cleaners that never gave me any trouble were the microsoft version of regcleaner back from the windows95 days, and the registry cleaner built into ccleaner, provided you carefully select which items you want it to delete.
Microsoft's Regcleaner was actually NOT supported by Microsoft, but it did its job and never gave me trouble. ever.
I haven't used it in years though as it was never really made to use with XP.
I've tried it with no ill effect, but I didn't really want to continue using it as that wasn't what it was designed for.

I had also... So returned to Reg Cleaner 4.3 :tmb:
jv16 automatic mode suxx, but RC4.3 does it all right (maybe it misses some entries, but doesn't delete nesessary for sure).

Interesting. :)
But I'm curious, the link you posted above is for the jv16 cleaner?
Nope. It's for Reg Cleaner 4.3 :)

That's what it says, but when you click on the link to download it, it downloads the jv16 cleaner.
Have you tried it?
I just did.
4 times!
OOPS :o (the worst word in nuclear physics)
Link edited. Thanx The_Terminator :)

I've got your back!
Incidentally, I don't think "oops" is very good in the open heart surgery room either. :vlol:
