Do you have "Sleep mode" button on your keyboard? Damned thing can be stuck...

Try to load it in Safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if it's a software issue. If yes it must boot in Safe mode. Then report.

What PSU (Power Supply Unit) do you have, if it's less than 350W - can cause this also, but more likely it's your KB.

Boot in Safe mode (F8 while booting) and run antivirus scan.

But if system kernel is affected IMO it would be better to reinstall XP with system drive reformat. If you have several HDD or logical drives copy all personal data from system drive to another. Then boot from Windows XP Installation CD and perform a clean install with reformat to the drive that was previously occupied by XP.

OK, run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and post the report. Tell also what PSU do you have (try to find this information).

Have you run Scandisk and defragmentation?

You can also run CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download) to get rid of junk and temporary files.
