View Full Version : Reconstruction of Real Ruins?

Now that we actually have the technological ability to do so, does anyone think that it would be wonderful if CD made a good effort to (superficially) accurately reconstruct real ruins from life?

I'm not saying transferring every single nook and cranny into tedious realism, more like copying the layouts and maybe some of the decor. It would be so awesome to walk through a cyber Luxor Temple for example. The real Tiwanaku looks so much better than the one they did in Legend for example.

You can't beat the atmosphere of the real thing, so why not?

Because it wouldn't make for good and interesting gameplay. They can take the artistic style alright, but I would prefer they were more creative and imaginative with the levels!

hence not a block by block reconstruction :p How likely are you to find something you can grapple in a real ruin? :D

I agree that if they do it block by block it'd be... too real :)

thats sounds like a wonder ful idea. ive always wondered if they based some of the layouts of tombs from real life...guess not.:p i think they should use like the layouts and textures and decore of walls. that'd be cool. but i dont wont it to actually be real, just based on something that exist.:D

does this look familiar...

Ruins weren't actually built with Tomb Raider games in mind, so they don't offer traps or passages that are necessary to be an interesting level instead of just an interesting location. Of course, CD could always attempt to make at least the entrance area more like existing ruins, but I don't think it would be an overall good idea.

Yes, I think that the outside of the ruin could be like the real thing (copied from an existing ruin), but it doesn't have to be (sometimes made-up locations are the best). However, the inside shouldn't. If the ruin includes e.g. a huge statue of Buddha or Isis etc. then that should be included, but the rest should be left to the imagination of the developers - traps, secret passageways, mystical guardians of the temple etc. Otherwise a VERY nice idea! :tmb: I had been contemplating on it myself, as well.

s/he said not to remake every nook and cranny.:p if they did than yes, it would be quite a boring game.. no traps, no alive mummies, maybe some wild animals. but the outside and entrances, and textures on walls and stuff like that could tastefully be copied.:D

Um. You think so? A wall with some piles of rocks and an archway in the middle of the desert is better than a subterrainian pyramid built atop a tepui with waterfalls cascading from the cliffs, equipped with traps and puzzles and a huge open room with a mysterious stone dias?

If not your idea, than at least create the "ruins" or the target area with the idea of making the area "real", and than designing multiple routes to explore it. Not create a gadget or move and then an area to take advantage of it. No strategically placed rings and the like. Make all of it potentially interactive if Lara has the athleticism to reach it. A real environment with multiple routes and real challenges not based on using a move or gadget.

exactly. It really ruins the atmosphere to find a conveniently placed ring just waiting to be grappled.

Don't you think if they mimiced the tomb, someone might die climbing on all those ruins. We all know laras agile but some of the programmers and artist... I wouldn't bet on it!
