View Full Version : Why can't they come up with something original?
Okay I am a little bit annoyed over something I have just seen, I think that people might agree with me. I have seen a direct copy of Lara Croft, in another game! It's called WET the character she is pictured wearing holsters on her legs and she has two guns like Lara, she is even wearing boots and she has a sword like excalibur and this other character nearly even looks like her but she has her hair down. The game company for the game WET is called Sierra. I think if we inform Eidos about this maybe they could stop this game from being produced. How far can this go, before it's a direct copy?

It's nice that there are more female protagonists in games, but you are right, most of them are very much like Lara. A woman that would kill anyone that might disrupt her goals and won't take no for an answer. Wet is definitely something I would like to play but that doesn't stop it from being unoriginal. The trousers of Rubi remind me of what Lara wore in the Angel of Darkness, but that's only a minor reason of why she is unoriginal.
I don't like that every time a new heroine is announced they mention Lara as though she will be replaced, very lame.

It's games like LocoRoco and Okami that restore my faith in gaming. :)
Good to hear people thoughts, I have found something even gets me mad. The have used elements of Tomb Raider in the game. Here's a video:

Exactly, that's what made Tomb Raider great in the beginning. I'm sure there will be many people interested in Wet as there is a woman with sex appeal, attitude and over the top action but if you see clearer there is something missing, and that's originality.
This game is a rip-off of pretty much anything. It has some types of Lara 'elements' and mostly copys POP, TR, and other 3rd person action games. Not to mention its all 'action' and probably nothing else. I have a strong feeling this will go the way of Dead To Rights - All you ever do in that game is just mercilessly kill anyone in your way and theres about a trillion enemies in one level. Believe me this game wont get very far. Also it doesn't do anything new.

It would be OK in my opinion if they grabbed ideas from other games but they don't even try to invent something new, none of the games do that.
Well considering the fact that Sierra is older, wiser and better than Eidos and the fact that they only distribute this game I wouldn´t even bother with it. Nothing is original anymore, and talking about original it´s Sierra who´s producing most of at least somewhat original games :P
What I found interestng is that you´re crying over one game that can be considered as a "clone" but what about dosens of other clones out there? Why cry about one new game when there´s at least thousand of others even more obvious rip-offs of TR franchise? :)

to be honest I dont think this game looks like tombraider at all other than a female character with guns yes shes athletic and can kick A** but I dont this is a clone of lara inspiration yes but not a clone.
also about her name being ruby and how its short like laras....are you being serious?
look at tomb raider now it borrows alot of elements and gameplay techniques for POP does that mean should we try to stop the next tr game from being produced?
seriously, you are taking this a bit far trying to stop a game from being produced because there are a couple similarities.
p.s. a katana and excalibur pretty much have nothing in common, and females cant wear boots without copying off lara now?

I like the fact that a lot of games seem like TR now, because TR is the only games I play so I can play more because I may like them. I think it is positive but thats just me.
in the words of Fry from Futurama: "People want to see the same thing they saw a million times before. surprising things scare them and smart things make them feel stupid." something along those lines.
and the fact that people want to play it safe & make money.
When was the last time there was a truly original concept in gaming? Just like the film and tv industries, most of the ideas have been thought of long ago; everything these days is just a variation.
You could quite easily say Lara / Tomb Raider is an Indiana Jones copy.....

Honestly, I would rather have other games copying TR than the other way around. TR had very original elements, but now when I'm playing PoP and think "I've seen this in Anniversary, this one too and this too..." I just get sad because I have the fear that TR will become 'Just another game series'...
I'm interested to see how this game will turn out, and I'll probably buy it.
Can't wait to have the last laugh. This game will probably get 9s and 10s.
Mind you, the same people who complain "Where's the originality!" are also the same ones who say "Yea! Let's play a reimagination of Tomb Raider 1!"

I don't know if she's a Lara copy, plenty of people can use holsters and a lot of game hero's are similar, guns, holsters, having breasts means nothing, I remember a time when people used to say to me, Lara is just Indy with breasts .
I think it would be a good game, but i think they are kinda taking the **** out of lara. they are saying well lara sold well so any women with boobs and twin pistols and holsters AND a sword (excalibor sp??) will sell. Imo I like lara because shes got attitude and because she only plays for sport, Ruby does it for money or for something she wants. I would get the game but i dont have an Xbox 360 OR a PS3:D dammit i think they trying to get you to buy a PS3 and the game!! LMAO!
