No it isn't. It is an exercise in bashing. The individuals that respond are a very self selected minority that like to bash. If you are interested in what the "majority" of bashers like to bash then I suppose this is the place for you.

I think the series could've done without Chronicles. Just a quick cash-in with no real artistic value.

I would also have said Chronicles but I believe it is a vital part of the TR series because without it, the TR:LE would never have reached the amount of people as it did. It was the release of Chronicles that gave birth to the TR:LE community. That very community continues to bring fans definitive classic style TR levels.

Actually, I'd say TR5, because some things don't make much sense (especially in the Rome levels) and it didn't feel as 'complete' as some of the others. Not that I hate it in any way, i like this game almost as much as the rest. However it wouldn't bother me as much as the others though if it were exterminated :)

If you hadn't noticed, AoD did not cause the death of the series. While it is now in the hands of Crystal it is still very much alive. If AoD had been that bad they would not have tried to "re-invent" it. People would have steered clear of it anyway.

Evidently, that shows that while AoD was harshly criticised, it was certainly more than enough to keep the series alive.

Well, I actually got it both early, and free.

The it arrived the next day, 7 days before its release date.

I say Tomb Raider 1. After replaying that recently, I couldn't help but be astonished at how empty and outdated it feels. It almost feels like a prototype or something (although, that's not far from the truth I suppose).

The level designs are, to me, in many places noticeably disgusting and awkard. (Apart from The Lost Valley, I can't say many of the levels -- not even the infamous St. Francis' Folly, Palace Midas or Atlantis -- are really worthy of the acclaim they receive, THESE DAYS). I think people need to stop nostalgically looking at this game through rose-coloured glasses.

Funnily enough, the astonishing improvement in quality made with Tomb Raider 2 shows how bland the original is.

I don't think ANYONE benefits from the original being playable any more, IMHO.

I did speak for myself. Re: "I don't think..."

Yeah I played it with modern graphics too. Don't you find most of the level design is way too arbitrary? Clearly Core Design wanted to get the most out of each room by making Lara traverse it via the most complicated course, but I find every game after that does a much better job of making it feel like Lara is actually navigating and exploring tombs, not simply on an obstacle course dressed up with tomb-like wallpaper.

To put it differently, while playing Tomb Raider 1, I'm constantly NOTICING the level design, like "ahh this room is for me to jump across... oh i see the designers want me to be fooled by this but I won't... oh look at those floating boxes that make no sense..." but instantly, from Tomb Raider 2 onwards, I'm totally gripped by the design, and I feel like Lara actually is a character, and I am Lara, and I am being challenged by real, living environments.

"The Great Wall" instantly blows out of the water Tomb Raider 1, IMHO. The location IS the level, rather than the location dressing up an arbitrarily challenging obstacle course.

I do agree wholeheartedly that in terms of level design TR2 was on the whole better, and you named my all-time favorite level in the Great Wall and its Gauntlet of Traps. In my opinion this level has never been equaled, it's design was stupendous. But they had a game to work off of and therefore could use what worked better and incorporate the various danger elements more naturally in the game.

Bowie
08-09-07, 04:06
^ well TR1 started the series and the games improved with each one.

Speak for YOURSELF, you don't know that for sure. At least I was stating my opinion "I don't think..." because this is a forum where you're supposed to do that. I didn't ACTUALLY speak for everybody by claiming something as fact.

And what does it matter that TR1 started the series? The question is hypothetical, and it asks which game we would exterminate. It doesn't ask us to consider fairness in terms of TR1 being released 10 years ago with the least technological innovation.

So if, as you say, the games improved with each one, then TR1, by your logic, would make the perfect candidate for extermination. And while I don't agree that every game is an improvement on the last, I do believe the first one is the least immersive and enjoyable. And that isn't even considering the technology. I feel as though the DESIGN is inferior to its sequels in most respects.

I agree. They had a game to work off of. That doesn't mean it can't be "exterminated" now, hypothetically. The awesomeness of Tomb Raider 2 and its unparalleled levels would still remain. I'm just answering the hypothetical question as I see it.

In your poll, Eddie, I found myself having to choose a favorite level, and immediately the Great Wall sprung to mind, but then I thought, I really can't think of them all, what it I forget something, then I tried to remember where I would go over and over in the game. I really liked playing the barkhang monastery once I figured out not to accidentally kill the monks when shooting the mercenaries. I forgot how much I loved the Tibetan Foothills, I'm a sucker for machines you can ride. I also loved the lost valley and Venice, I loved the Opera House levels. So much to love in that game.

I won't choose a game to exterminate, but if you held a gun to my head it would have to be anniversary. Just don't like the Game much, the graphics are nice, but I just played TR1 right after I finished Anni, and I was in heaven. I guess I have a vivid enough imagination to not be concerned about the graphics so much.

If anyone cannot remember or think of a level they ought to head over to "Stella's" and look at the titles of the levels in the walkthroughs. They are all listed there.

If I could not choose the Great Wall for the level design question I would choose the Opera House because of the fact that in this relatively small area they packed in plenty of fun and action. :)

I do LOVE TR1, btw. I just love the others more, though (even Chronicles, AOD and Legend -- three vastly different consecutive entries -- although I think the Rome levels have the EXACT SAME prototypical/arbitrary design element that I feel lets down TR1).

As for nostalgia, I think that in 10 years' time we will feel nostalgia for all of the Tomb Raider games, even those we hate at the moment for various reasons (like lots of people HAAAATED Chronicles when it came out; or derided AOD until starting to compliment it in order to distinguish Core as separate from and superior to CD).

At that point, TR1 won't be in the uniquely nostalgic position that it is in now, I believe, and will fall short because of the design problems I have described.

I stand by my unshared opinion that, in the long run, in terms of the enjoyability factor, 'exterminating' TR1 forever would be the wisest investment.

AOD wasn't really what I've expected for a perfect Tomb Raider game, the controls ruined the game completely for me but it has some good points anyway.

But if I had to choose, I'd choose without any hesitations the pointless Chronicles. It's the worst of the series IMO.

I would like to have AOD exterminated becuase it wasnt continued. I LOVED THE GAME but since it was never continued it is a bit pointless.

The storyline would go

TLR: Lara gets trapped in tomb
TRC: in the end von croy finds lara and everything is normal again
TRL: legend storyline that shows the whole lara trapped thing is over

Hmmm Tomb Raider game that had to be exterminated... hmmmm

Of course if you consider Legend and Anniversary as a Tomb Raider games then those two can burn in hell :).

If you mean REAL Tomb Raider games the Chronicles would be the one (Even though I love the cutscenes it was still rushed and short).

legend. it's an OK game but i don't think anyone would have paid much attention if lara wasn't in it.

i personally didn't feel like it was true TR and i think it's now infuenced all future titles into being linear and having uber short levels and lara almost crying at every constant mention of her family.

i liked the idea of her being disowned from her upper class family and going against them all in the name of raiding tombs.

well, if AOD was properly finished, it probly would hav sold more and been successful, thus keeping core and having tomb raider anniversary edition from core....

i just dont understand why eidos rushes the games. they should do what the japanese do. make a very long game and hav the gamer hooked onto it. and make a sequel about 2 yrs later and make sure it blows the first one out of the water. so it would be a more special game series and not overworked. level editor should have been made since TR2. which would hav probably been released later. but of course, they want the cheap quick buck. correct me if i'm wrong, but theyre american arent they?
