View Full Version : Do people treat me diffrent because of my age?

Dont get me wrong i have lots of good freinds on the forum that are really nice to me even though they are 15 years older (im 12) but im really sick of people using my age to get at me. I have recieved ageist PM's, someone has told me i cant be a mod because of my age, i have been rejected from a LE project becuase of my age (although i still have the aod remake, TRA remake and tr2 remake) and people talk to me as if they dont want to say anything i wont understand. When i tell people im 12 they go "OMG really?!?!" and i feel so... whats the word? Weird? Embaressed? Unaccepted? Along those lines...

anyway do you think im over-reacting?

I don't think so. You seem mature for a 12 year old and unlike other youngsters on this forum who are very immature. Even some of the older ones are less mature than you.

I wouldn't worry about anything, just be who you are and if you're rejected, just tell them you're capable of it if you truly are. Don't make a big fuss about it, cos now that would bring down your maturity level and as you said, you'll be treated differently.

When I first joined, there were some members (no names mentioned) who acted likewise towards me. It seems to have died down, though.

But your situation sounds miles worse than mine.

don't give a **** about your age, it is your words and actions here that can make others to "reject" you!
don't offend anyone and you will not be offended or thrown away of any place or project...
once again it has nothing to do with your age

But i cant help but feel strange when people socialise with me diffrently and makes ageist comments. I think "omg do people really see me that way?"

who did that? certainly people that are more immature than you! i was called as spammer by some members here from TRF... have you ever seen me banned? no you didn't, that means that i'm not such a spammer after all ;)
those people use your age because they have any other argument to use except for that one

Age matters not. When I first joined, despite being 15 at the time, it was about 5 days of so before my 16th birthday (if I remember correctly). Loads of people were really nice and welcoming. Others were... not.

I never knew you were 12, you sounded for me like a 16 years old. And the people who judge you on your age are in most cases just jealous that you're much more mature than they are. Don't let them get you, if you don't show any attention, there's nothing funny about it anymore, good luck with it! :)

Well from my time here on TRF, I can say without a single shred of doubt in my mind that it's the most welcoming forum I have ever come across, and probably always will be, or will be for a long, long time. What I personally have noticed while I've been here for a few months or so, is that people treat you according to the person you are. It's a simple philosophy, really. If you're nice, you're treated nicely, regardless of age, gender, race etc. But that's only what I have experienced, as I have never been discriminated due to my age or otherwise. But then again, I have never provoked any spiteful arguments, or I have avoided them at least.

The best thing to do if you ever feel unfairly discriminated against is to tell a mod.

if you tell me that doesn't prevent anything they can still shoo you of in threads. If you ask me I never care about age, one or other time I check it but only after talking to that someone for quite a while and really it doesn't change a thing for me. People who do that to you are quite stupid if you ask me, when I was 12 (wich was only 2 year ago) I was treated the same way, by some older guys and now they don't even say anything... I really don't know why it just very stupid! but if you ask me it happens to every one you just have to deal with it your own way, unfortunantly

I could say I never pay attention on anyone's age here, it's the way people post and express things that may affect my way of approaching them.. Some people just require different kinds of.. how'd I say, methods? It certainly isn't about the "matureness" we see in numbers, more like personality and so. And if I see someone posting with a certain style, say.. naivish, for example, I know I have to choose my wording in a certain way also so that the other party surely understands. It's not that I despise or underestimate the person in purpose, I just want to be kind of "equal" and careful so to not crush my acquaintance with heavy sentences and therefore make the situation difficult for him/her.. This does not mean I completely change my ways or try to be extremely kind, just sort of "edit" the conversation's tone a little. So that the point gets through and hopefully doesn't lead to purely unpleasant, unnecessary arguments. Yup.

So yay, it's the way of posting that matters, at least for me. ^_^

I know I'm the person that set you off, and sorry but I'm 44 and what can I say? You sometimes do act very immature. Sometimes I do too, even at my age, however it's a little different because I'm much older. For your age, you are sometimes surprisingly articulate, other times you act your age. (in my opinion) but you know what? That's just my opinion, and I'm just some person on the internet. Nothing to lose sleep over.

And believe me ageism is directed at me too.

Shouldn't?

Shouldn't be racist, shouldn't go to war, shouldn't tell lies, shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, shouldn't form unfair attitudes, shouldn't be snarky, shouldn't be irreverent.

It is what it is, the world is not always fair. People don't like me because I'm old, what should I do about it, whine? or deal with it.

Look on the bright side, you'll grow up, I'll never grow young. :)

^ I think what myrmaad was alluding to was that mature people can discuss/disagree on a particular subject, and move on without the inclination to "start an argument". Disagreements and debates are designed to go back and forth without an "argument" occuring. It's all about respectfully accepting others opinions and politely disagreeing.

???????????????

On-topic: I don't think there's much ageism here, at least, no more than exists in the "real world". People tend to treat you according to the way you behave in your posting style.....be that good or bad :wve:

Very true, if you act like a kid, you'll be treated as one. There are many "youngsters" in here that if I didn't know any better I'd say they were much older.

Another point I will make is that in the face to face world, kids are naturally not going to be treated as intellectual equals by most adults. Their life experiences are much less and therefore their knowledge and wisdom are for the most part substantially less. In here however, if you are forthright, respectful and polite you will be treated very well, regardless of your age. :)

How you carry your opinion determines how you're treated on a forum. Your age may carry the stigma of a slack and easy way to point the finger but you are a kid afterall. I wouldn't worry about it so long as you have your bit fun and heed the rules.

Twilight you totally missed the point. I didn't judge trXD because he's young, I actually cut him some slack because he's young. Many of his posts are pointlessly argumentative, he has even admitted that in real life his friends have scolded him for being overly argumentative. On top of that he is not constructive in his arguments, many times resorting to naive baiting, and illogical conclusions, that only serve to highlight his lack of experience and youth.

As I said earlier, he will grow up, while we 'oldsters' will never grow young, so it's not like we're using it to name-call, youth has the obvious advantage there, doesn't it?

I mentioned it in hopes he would check himself out. Too much to hope for. Name-calling is a sign of immaturity, so I'd appreciate if you didn't assume to call me "ignorant". I'd put my IQ and education up against yours any day. I don't think all young people are immature, I call it like I see it though when I see it. At least trXD has an excuse for his immaturity since he's 12. I have a son who is 27, so maybe you can understand why I would consider a 12 year old a child.

You may do whatever you want, but speaking that way doesn't look of someone mature, or perhaps the same happened to you, and now you're giving an advice!

To reach an understanding with someone we cannot be rude, and we must know our limits! If we passed that limit then we must say sorry! I'm not saying you'r a kid, but being rude/agressive is also being immature, IMO!

Don't get these words as an offense! This is only an advice!

@ myrmaad : i wasnt directing anything to u! just to ppl that are rude to younger ppl for no reason. u at least had reasons. tho some ppl (once again i dont mean ppl here) judge instantly and theyre argument stands on nothing but prejudice.

@ CroftScionGuard : i'm not attempting to look mature, i'm just saying my opinion. once again, i wasnt directing all advice to ppl here. it happens other places also. i was just trying to tell him to not worry about ppl who have that sort of prejudice and to move on.

It depends on the adult if the adult is an immature person he will try to show the younger person his intellectual superiority and if thay turn out to be stupider than the younger person they will show the younger person his physical superiority. Its happenned to me sometimes at school.

Most people here dont care about age,sex or nationality but some immature people adults included try to prove youger people than them are wrong

In society Ageist attitudes are still very much accepted and its a shame. Even I have had albeit rarely, some remarks or insinuations made about my age.

I guess all you can do is be true to yourself and others, it takes you a long way.
Oh and remember to question exactly why your posting what your going to post. I've frequently typed up really long posts and decided not to post it after realising its actually quite pointless.

Overall, I find this forum to be a good place to visit and most are open minded and intelligent people who I enjoy talking to. Age doesn't enter my mind about others here (unless a members tries to use their age as a way to gain superiority over others).

If you feel anybody on the forums is talking down to you or making inappropriate comments, whether because of your age of just because they're being an idiot, send the links to any mod via pm and they will be happy to take a look at the situation with you in the strictest of confidences.

Thanks for your support
but i dont see what the mods can really do to be honest

They can warn people not to make comments like that again? If they persist they can be banned?

If we feel the aggressor is acting inappropriately we can talk to that person and tell them to tone it down.

Bann someone if that someone goes in a disrespectful way!
Maybe they can't do in the way you want!

IMO don't make case of that! Leave the comments behind! Keep posting and life goes on!

I do but i cant help but feel slightly unaccepted in the forum as more and more people start to make ageist comments

Send the same pm to two or three different mods. One of them is bound to be available to help you out.

Perhaps it is not your age they treat you differently because of. They may say it is your age because they can't find another way to say what they don't like about you.

But believe it or not, some people don't like self-pity threads.

Better not be me...:p

To be honest MT, and i mean no offence here, but I thought you would be meaner than that, from my post above...:)

Yeah but if LadyLara did that your reaction would be of complete shock and concern.

LadyLara as in Rosi?(LadyLarac xD)

Anyways, your maturity level is usually what people base their treatment of you on.

I would love to be treated like an adult, most of my new teachers already are treating me like that compared to the babys in my class.

IMO this thread is exposing you more! A good friend is someone that likes you and age is no wall!

Being 12 is fine, expressing opinions is wonderful.

The problem that occurs to me is that we (myself included) try to proove ourselves by making clever and insightful posts, but sometimes the most wise course of action is to say nothing.

On an internet forum you can't generate a reputation as being wise and insightful if you never post. Catch 22.

No matter what you post someone may disagree, and it's easy to get drawn in to an argument and say something that is less than gracious, or even downright dumb.

How you respond is what is most important. Having enough judgement to be able to carefully evaluate your responses does take some experience. Experience takes time.

I would suggest that you: trXD: try to relax a little. If you can hold your own on a forum like this at the age of 12, then you have a bright future ahead of you - don't stress it.

I am managing to cope as they are just words (Although it worries me that more and more people are starting to do it) but i just started this thread to see if anyone else has ran into the same problems

Shouldn't you be in bed? :p

Only muckin'... :)

To be honest, sometimes people should get treated along with their age group. When I was 12, I was treated the same as you... Now, I'm 16, I'm treated a bit better, but adults still treat me younger than them. That's just the way it is...

I dont care :) Youre a good Tomb Raider and I respect you for that. You have good ideas and I like that. I love your threads, your posts, I like you, trXD. I dont judge you cause of your age ;) People that do that are low, ignorant and are probably jealous of you, cause their ideas are far worse and are embarrassed ;) Don't worry I dont judge you :)

Hahaha! I had a reason to use it against you. I tried to post a reason and you called my reasoning shallow. I don't like that the world is that way, but it just is. ;)

Don't ever use me as an example again... It's so obvious why people treat you that way. How can you not see it? Pathetic. :p
