I'm trying to describe something to my friend, but I can't think of the word! lol It's so annoying.

What do you call something if it is cliched, or if people think its annoying or overused. Like if a guy was trying to be overly romantic in todays age of losers and players.

geez...I can't think of it lol.

Cheesy!:jmp:

Soma Holiday
08-09-07, 08:31
cheesy is on the right lines...Its more of a opinion of something...ger.

I've tried dictionaries, but I can't quite get it lol...

ex....if a guy was to try and rouse a girl through Old English poetry, he'd be very ______.

again...its like cheesy...but its more an opinion, like personally I don't think such a thing is cheesy, its just a state that some people do. Also, its kinda a long/classy sounding word, like not many people would know it...

lol

08-09-07, 08:56
lol! haha...ok. The example isn't important, but kinda...the best way to describe it is from a gentlemen's perspective, like...The idea of a man giving a woman flowers on a first date would be considered _______ , because it is outdated and cliched lol.

Chivalrous?

Soma Holiday
08-09-07, 09:06
Being Chivalrous is viewed by today's standards as ____. lol

Ok...lets say some guy came up to you and was talking like a vampire, and being very suave lol...what would you say he was?

Ladyknowles

Mona Sax
08-09-07, 09:14
Anachronistic? It's not negative, though, just old-fashioned.

Isn't pretentious more like you are expecting something to happen automatically?

jackali
08-09-07, 12:40
Pretentious isn't really like "corny". I might have gone with bromidic, if going like "corny".

Ada the Mental
08-09-07, 12:45
How about "contrived"?

myrmaad
08-09-07, 12:58
What do you call something if it is cliched, or if people think its annoying or overused. Like if a guy was trying to be overly romantic in todays age of losers and players.

I think "contrived" is the best entry; I'll offer "Banal".

both are better words for your description then "pretentious"> which means: tawdry, vulgar, or intended to attract attention, or making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction

Not that it matters.

Soma Holiday
08-09-07, 22:37
This is the definition I have...

Pretentious- attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed.

Thanx again lol. I am going into English more than likely next year, and it was really bothering me. I guess "tasteless" would have been a good description, but I suppose this word isn't often used. It does exsist however, which means that I'm not crazy lol.

Snobby?

08-09-07, 23:37
Isn't pretentious more like you are expecting something to happen automatically?

That's presumptuous (as in, presuming something will happen)
