I vote to add "fanboy" and "fangirl" to the list of words that are censored by the forum software (JUST KIDDING ABOUT THAT). It's ridiculous that people are labeled as such in an effort to minimize their views. If someones' post is lacking credibility, take it on point by point, or criticize its lack of substance; no need to display your own lack of an informed opinion by labeling someone as a "fanboy" in what can only be construed as a cheap attempt to discredit what they say. Attack the argument, people, NOT THE POSTER.

You're a fanboy of fanboys! ;)

I'd say this also applies to the vast majority of Crystal & Core fanboy accusations made as well in the TR series section.
Good thread :tmb:

DUH... can a moderator change the topic title to "with" in place of "will"... typing too fast again! :o
Well said!!
Lol, coming from the guy who called me a fanboy in another thread. At least I, unlike you, am able to make arguments when I'm making my point clear.
To get back on topic, I don't think the censoring will help. You will have to censor other things as well, like anti-. As in anti-Sony and anti-Microsoft.
Some people aren't fanboys, they're just against a company. And that's ok, it's just a pity when they bother the rest of the forum by making a job out of making a company look bad.

Nah, the "censoring" part I just threw out there as a whim... to kick-start my thoughts. I don't really expect that! I do wish people discussed things more rather than constantly post one-liners that conveniently dismiss someone and their entire posts. It was the thread about the reviews of Lair, and Sonys' response to them that got me on this kick. It was a legitimate link to an article and the topic creator did post his opinions along with it. I think people did him--and the forum--a disservice in immediately bashing him personally as a "fanboy" without commenting on the article that he posted.
NOTE: You did comment on the article, and did so very well, as I recall. At least you contribute intelligently to the dialogue on this forum. ;)
Embrace the unity, buy Pee-es-three, buy Three-Six-Tee! I know I will... unless MS nicks FF and MGS.
EDIT: Or come to think of it, don't buy at all.
In that case, I share your opinion. Not literally censoring the term, but stop using it is a very good idea in my opinion. It might actually result in getting reasonable discussions in this forum section.
And gtkilla's case is, I think, a little different. As he posted two threads about Sony, that weren't really that big of a deal and made them out to be huge Sony blunders.
I believe that's the reason he was labelled a fanboy. And the fact that he just replied with 'don't care' about a thousand times didn't really help. He could have explained his actions so people could understand him better.
If he's trying to make clear that Sony is screwing up with certain things, than he could have done it in a different way (a lot better even, since Sony has been screwing up a lot lately).
I still think that Sony was within reason to send out a "Reviewer's Kit For Dummies". Apparently it was necessary.

Well said Dave. Too many folks evade arguments to make it a personal snipe.
It's pointless. Let it be with the fanboyism, is not really offending.
Erh.. Sure. Labelling is a big problem in these forums. But censoring a word like that? What does that help? It will cause even more confusion as the censored word could be mistaken for something else. Better would be not being so damn anti sony or anti microsoft and trying to prove the fans how wrong they are and how right you are. That's pointless and that makes wars happen.
Sure. I'm a fan boy of Sony and I hate Microsoft. But do I shove my opinion down your throat? No! So don't try to shove your's down mine. Opinions are great.. but extreme bashing, rolling eyes & labelling are not.
For the latter I rarely post my opinion here anymore. People are too hostile.
Dunno why I'm even saying this.. meh..
I do agree that censorship probably isn't the best answers to the obvious problems of "fanboyism" accusations (I myself, sit firmly on the fence though I lean towards Wii for its quirkiness) but I feel that this thread in itself will help a lot if it actually causes some people here to stop and think before posting.

I agree as well. I see it most in user comments about MMOs. People get heated up about that stuff really fast! Those games seem to create fanatics to the MMO they are playing at the time. But my point is that there is very little actual discussion about why this MMO is more fun than another. I think many people can't articulate why that is and just fall back into the "You're a fanboy" comment.
The funny thing about MMOs is that, to me, its a more personal choice than a single player game. I mean if you are going to invest alot of time in one why wouldn't you pick the one that is most fun to you? How could that make one a fanboy?:tea:
Also... what about being a self-declared fanboy? i.e. I declare myself a Bioshock and Bioware fanboy.;)

Okay, I put a disclaimer on the "censoring" portion of my post... I thought it would be taken for an exaggeration, and not a literal, serious, proposal. Anyone who's paid attention to my posts all these years would know that I abhor limits and wouldn't want more than we already have! The full meaning of my post, however, is just how I want it to be...

I was commenting on the fact that someone indicated that your reasoned response was being ignored. I could not resist the pun on your name and the fact that you do defend Sony. If fact I do believe that that was the first time I ever used the term as applied to another individual.
As one who has been verbally assaulted serveral times on this forum I was applauding Dave's efforts to keep the discussion on a civil level

This thread! Another fan boy venting his frustration! Typical!
Just joking Dave :tea:
You're a fanboy of fanboys! ;)
LOL :vlol:
This is a disgusting topic. Mostly because it's censorship, but it also means that we'll have a new group of people who say "OOOOOOOH you can't call me fanboy it's against the rules. you're a very bad man! ;)"

I don't advocate censorship of any kind... although this forum and many forums do it to some degree. I do sometimes regret that, in this day and age, just about everyone has the ability to express themselves in front of people all over the world--yet a shockingly small percentage of them are able to express themselves well!

Free thought promotes free rebuttal. Rebuttal leads to argument. Arguments lead to education.
Putting a gag over somebody's mouth, no matter how outlandish it may be, gives the impression that it is wrong to speak your mind. This is why I'm so upset at Eidos' censorship of TRAE content. It leaves people in the dark. And what will stop them from learning about it anyway?

But that is exactly what people do... If you will please re-read my first post you'll see I was not serious about banning the word "fanboy"; although I do wish people would stop using it because it does nothing but stop real communication at this point. When someone posts something that is negative about something (these days it's usually Sony and the PS3), people will pile on that person, calling him/her a "fanboy" and, thus, ignoring all debate over the issue at hand. It's tantamount to telling everyone else "nothing to see here... he's just a fanboy... ignore all he says." Of course people have the freedom to say it... I would just hope to persuade some of them to do more the next time; to express more than just "Fanboy!" or "Sony suxxors" or "MS suxxors" (or whatever made up words people post)!
BTW... I have no idea what that string of numbers and letters means!
PARANOIA'S post could be looked upon as supportive of your idea - that's how I interpreted it.
The very fact we have certain people who think others can and should be silenced by calling them a fanboy shows how we've developed a culture of people afraid to speak out. Micki has already said he no longer feels he can speak out here because of this.

Thank you! It seems as though we can never have a discussion like that without someone getting called a "fanboy" or "fangirl". People are throwing around that term too much. Whenever anything negative about a certain company/group is posted, people immediately resort to name calling(fanboy/fangirl) and it's getting very annoying, really.

Okay first off, this is not even that serious. The Wiki Halo 3 thing was originally supposed to be a joke thread...to laugh at the guy who tried editing that page. You're the ones who took it seriously, not me. The first part of the only thing I posted in that thread was:
"I lol'ed when I read this. :D"
The title might have been a bit misleading, but I wasn't about to type "Sony employee reaches an all new low" because that sounds dumb.
Now the Lair review thread is a different case. My three "Don't care" posts were directed to the people who called me a fanboy, showing them that I don't really give a **** if you call me a fanboy. I gave my views on the subject later in the thread, but in the first few pages, all people were doing was jumping down my throat and calling me a fanboy, so I simply responded "Don't care".
I agree :) Some people did take it too far in that thread.

Probably so! I don't know, I'm a little tired right now, so if I misunderstood Paranoias' post I apologize to him/her. :o
I just think "fanboy" is nothing more than name-calling. And when name-calling starts intelligent conversation ends. And I know you and Paranoia and other rational folk agree with me. I'm going to take a nap now. I need one! :)
