What do you guys think are the most overrated things of modern day? List 4 of them, it could be literally ANYTHING in your opinion, it could be a song, a drink, food...etc

mine:

1. iPods, even though I own one and will be getting the new one, I think it's incredibly overrated.
2. Video blogging, loads of people think it's SO cool to do that now it's like a trend. Please, we don't need people crying over Britney Spears anymore on Youtube.
3. Some designer labels, for example calvin klein, everyones wearing its undies it makes everything else so uncommon. same with others aswell like hangbags etc.
4. Starbucks, I love it, I mean everyone does but like the iPods, it's incredibly overrated.

2.) Abecrombie and Fitch, Holister etc. Wtf is up with those stores! There always full of bleach blonde Fake N Bake girls (Hell! walk out of there and you are tanner then when you walked in with all that fake tan mist those girls trail behind them!). Then of course they have drag around there shaggy haired boyfriends who are totally metro'ed out, She walks around with her starbucks cup in one hand and her new $789 nextel cell phone in the other while he is holding her $257 pair of ripped jeans while music promoting men buying there woman stuff is blaring on the speakers throughout...

3.) Coffee Shops, You can buy enough supplys to make like 30 cups of coffee with the amount you pay for one mocha frapa capa whatever the **** they call em

4.) Kanye West, Can't stand the guy! He thinks he is jesus or something... When really he isn't really any more special then the next hip-hop artist.

nice thread

anyway:

1) ESRB ratings. if ur gonna rate something "T for Teen" then make sure its Made for teens and not some censored crap.
2) all celebrities, highly overated. ppl act like theyre gods or something. seriously, theyre ppl, get a life.
3) (edit) make that ANIME. extremly overhyped and overused.
4) sexism/racism. nuff said.

1. McDonalds - Sick.

2. Tea. "Would you like a cup of tea?" - Cup of tea, sir? How about a nice cup of tea? Some tea? Tea anyone? I don't like sodding tea!

3. R&B / Rap "music". Invaded the world and now lingers.. or rather festers.. everywhere you go.

4. Youtube. Used to be cool before it leapt into bed with Viacom.

Lol I disagree with 75% of that list. :o I love tea(although I lol'ed when I read this part of your post :D), R&B and Rap(two separate genres) and Youtube. :D Even though they're kinda dumb now. Hardly anything's allowed to be uploaded there anymore...plus, the videos go out of sync anyways. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

EDIT: Whoopsie! Forgot to make my own list.

1) iPods & Macs - Overrated.
2) Japanese stuff(RPGs, anime, their style, culture...sorry if that's harsh, but that's how I feel. However, I do like some of their stuff like Kingdom Hearts! :D)
3) Heavy Metal/Rock - I like regular rock sometimes, but I can't stand the heavy metal garbage.
4) MMOs

1. Music. For some reason, a lot of people are under the impression that they can and should impress others by proclaiming their love for "X" band in myriad ways whenever possible. Blaring their car's sound system, wearing the shirt AND the patch AND they've got the bumper sticker, blaring their ipods "ooh I'm so cool and moody, can you hear it's the Beatles I'm listening to? 10ft away? Good, cos liking a 'vintage' band makes me more of an afficianado of music than you!" No one really cares what you listen to, unless they're your mate or want to date you or whatever.

2. What other people think. What do you really think when you see someone in an ugly outfit? When they say something stupid? Do you really even think on that stuff a minute later? Why do we care so much about what people think of us?

3. $600+ handbags. High school girls carry them, loads of people carry fakes- and get this, the average passerby doesn't know you've got an authentic Gu-Chanel & Bourke handbag. And since it's common knowledge there's so many fakes out there, much of the snob appeal luxury bag buyers are paying for is gone. Goodness sake, it's just a sack to tote around your wallet and makeup and junk!

Hmmm, can't think of a 4th at the moment..

Little-Lara

Some of u pretty much nailed them:

1. Brand name labels.... people look the same in a $10 outfit as a $100 one.

2. iCrap... and everything that comes with it... we work our asses off for money for some company to make millions???!! I don't think so.

3. Victoria B/Spicewhateverhernameis..... ok, next time the media MUST take our votes before bragging about anyone famous.

4. Starbucks......they have their own credit cards???!!! losers, they'll never get me. :tea:

and lastly, an extra....

5. California ...... its a great place to visit, but money could be used as toilet paper here. Its not that the value of houses has gone up, it is the value of money that has gone down. Sad but true. BTW, yes I'm angry cause I can't afford a house. I may be young, but I even find it hard to dream about it. :p

Edit:

1- Yea I know exactly what you mean by people's attitude towards music and their "i'm so cool I like vintage music". There's this guy at my college who dresses like a Mod, like suits and stuff (just look up mod on google) and he's EXTREMELY narrow minded about his style and music, he says he ONLY listens to mod music. I mean like what? I'm sorry I just don't like narrowminded lunatics.

2- We all care! We really do, even for 2 seconds, we still care about what others think. Look at it this way, you chose to go out in a clown outfit and makeup, would you care about the humuliation? Yes. Even though you'd probably never see those people you walk by ever again you would still care. It's just human nature.

2)Music after year 1989: That was when rap, hip-hop, and mfg. pop had to remix older songs to make theirs sound good. Nowadays, they don't even have music. They just have a rhythm track and someone talking in the background.

3)Political correctness: Did I offend you? Too bad. Life is offensive sometimes.

Sure, we have to care enough about what other people think so that we aren't completely ostracized from society, but a lot of people worry more than they need to about it (remember the thread about covering up pink notebooks?). Anyhoo, it makes me think back on something else posted here: when you're young, you worry about what everyone thinks, when you're middle aged, you're too busy/tired to care, when you're old, you realise no one was thinking about you anyway:p

01. Mainstream music (mainly r'n'b these days). I just don't see what the deal about it is, it sounds horrible and shallow to me.

02. Overpriced brand clothing and accessories. Who cares what it cost if it looks and feels good?

03. Trying to be 'random'. It may have been funny once, but saying 'monkey' in every sentence doesn't make you cool and unique.

04. Forced socializing. Some people like to be alone. Don't force them to interact with strangers for no reason.

Worse yet they're doing a lot of that group work stuff in colleges now. Mostly it's a professor's get-out-of-grading-individual-papers-free card. "Duhr. uhh.. Here's our powerpoint about ahhh president Nixon..." This is college, not high school part II :hea:

Rap music- all it's missing is the 'C' out the front

Tom Cruise- Personality the depth of a teaspoon. Best part of him was thrown out at birth.

Drug Dealers - Peddlers in death, misery and unhappiness. Should be executed on the spot - no exceptions.

1. Paris Hilton
2. Britney Spears
3. High school musical
4. Reality TV

1. Paris is just some other sluty rich girl who did nothing to get famous. We don't need to direct or attention to her, we all have better things to do.
2. Just like Paris but a bit harder to resist from all the things that have been happeing lately with Brit. First she shaves her head, go's to rehab, get's out still acts like crazy *****, then shaves her ****, then we find out that Britney is probly a lezbo.
3. I don't know about all your schools but EVERYONE that still watches the disney chanel is OBESSED with the worst "movie" in the world. I mean how can people really like high school musical? None of them can sing and they still have albums out... *shakes head* What happend to people with talent?
4. I will amit the very first season of the real world was kinda cool. But after the 10th season or how many they have, just when down hill. What's the point of reality TV? I mean all it is, is horny collage students messing around with each other.

Whoeheartedly agree. :tmb:

My list of things, people, objects that are totally overated:

• bleeding heart liberals (they change with the wind everyday to suit their vanity)
• World causes (how many more causes to save the world are needed?)
• NBA (Who wants to see a bunch of glorified gangsters play basketball…there's no class in the sport anymore)
• Paris Hilton (your porn tape is bad, your reality show is bad, your court appearence was bad…need we say more?)

Your results may vary.

In no particular order:

- Rihanna: Why the hell was she top of the UK singles chart for 10 weeks?
- Japanese stuff: As gtkilla said, sorry, I just think a lot of it (anime, most Japanese video games etc) are overrated. :p
- Harry Potter: It's just not as good as it's made out to be IMO. :p

1. People desperate to label themselves (or others) as belonging to a social pigeonhole - be it Emo, Rocker, Goth, Jock, Geek... whatever. Nothing and nobody can ever be that easily defined IMO

2. Mobile phones that try and squeeze in mp3 players, cameras, web browsing - what the hell happened to using a phone to actually, y'know... call someone?

3. Tescos. That company is so close to taking over the UK shopping market it's not even funny

4. Love. Bit of a weird one to stick in here at the end, but think about it. Most of the world is trying to find it, and it's not even usually particularly kind to you if/when you do manage to track it down. Definitely a strong candidate for 'overrated' in my book lol

2-Rap music- everyone nowadays seem to love it, for me it is just another style of "music" that unfortunately incentivates some people to be violent!

3-Play Station- i mean some say it is so good, but then when we get one and start playing with it, it is just so disapointing

4-YOUTUBE- nowadays it seems that if we don't uplade videos on youtube or if we don't watch any piece of **** in youtube we are not guys that do productive things in life...

2. The re-emergence of 'Torture porn' horror flicks a la Hostel, Saw etc...the market's weaker now than it ever has been. Any hope of seeing something that'll make you genuinely shuffle about in your seat like always, is relegated to the no budget splatter niche.

Myspace- Hate it, only created a space to please people. Go on FaceBook, you can add/do tonnes more then myspace

Rap- Whats the point if you can't really hear what the persons saying

New Fashion- Why not just keep everything you buy, eventually it'll be in fashion again. I hate how theres always a new rush to get stuff then its chucked in the bin 3 months afterwards

Think I am gonna stick with just three for the time being.

Pseudo-Stereotypical Gay acts:

I am sorry but acting like one of the cast from "Queer eye from the straight guy" does not defines you as gay. It does however defines you as a totally dilapidated lamo with about as much a fruitier lingo as a drunken broadway musical performer with a fling for westerns. I think the gay community is more sick of it then the heterosexual population.

Forum personal "drama" threads:

You have seen one, you have seen em all. Don't you just hate it when a forum page is filled with nothing but attention mongering so called "dilemma" declarations of the most minuscule of situations just thrown up as a personal problem to get advice upon? What's even more annoying is people throwing in the cliche "awwwww! Let me give you a hug on that" kinda claptrap of comments. They really don't actually provide a solution to the problem now do they.

No people; Having a personal problem does not makes you attention worthy anymore.

Online community Popularity:

This one just really takes the cake. Unless you are somehow being financially compensated for being a total suck-up spineless twit on a forum, in what way does it help you being one in order to score popularity points with emoish masses? Seems like people just end up swallowing their opinions in-order to not come off as mean to their milk-sup sensitive audience. God what moronic behavior.

1. American pop culture - prime example on how attractiveness of a culture is directly dependent on little more than economical prowess. The world has profited very little from American lifestyle over last two decades or so;

2. Human rights - a bunch of principles that are, at core, thoroughly Western, yet the West - Europe especially - stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that they only work in selective environment. Bound to backfire one day;

3. Monotheist God;

4. Final Fantasy VII. Or Final Fantasy in general and I never said that.

4. Love. Bit of a weird one to stick in here at the end, but think about it. Most of the world is trying to find it, and it's not even usually particularly kind to you if/when you do manage to track it down. Definitely a strong candidate for 'overrated' in my book lol

1. "Nice" Guys: No, not guys who are legitimately good people. The guys who are actually candy-asses and will let anyone walk all over them. They're usually really passive-agressive and manipulative. Frequently complain about women not really wanting "nice" guys. No, dip****s. We just want a guy with some balls.

2. Whining about Christianity: Just stop. All religions have their downfalls and extremist fruitloops. Hating Christianity isn't cool.

3. People constantly specifying that what they say is their opinion: Or rather, maybe I should complain about the folks that always have to point out "Well, that's YOUR opinion" when disagreeing. It's really lame. No kidding it's their opinion - That's why they said it!

4. Protecting "Family Values": Mostly insofar as how the Republicans of today approach it. Two men or two women getting married does not lessen the worth of marriage. Christianity is not the end-all, be-all to morals and a good life. Abstinence-only sex education is not going to prevent teenagers from having sex. You're supposed to be the party that stays out of our personal lives. What the hell happened?

Anyway.. here's my list..
1. The whole LEFT WING v.s RIGHT WING thing.... uttter nonsense... i don't fit in completely with any side... so many people argue about politics and so many of us are guilty at taking cheap shots at one side or other (incl. me!)

2. People saying the media is 'liberal'... bull:cen: their too scarred to do anything bold and daring that might 'damage' the family unit or risk loosing money.. the media is stuck in their 'safe zone' of whats acceptable

3. Celebrities..... what the hell is the point of them??? i don't care who goes out with who, who has a baby with a rediculous name, who has an arguement on set with who or any of their sex tapes , rehab stints or divorces and all other crap they get up too

- Teenage angst. No, you aren't the first; just because your parents / teachers won't let you do whatever you want when you want to doesn't mean they're unfair / out of order; you didn't invent sex / drugs / rock n' roll; yelling at passers by doesn't make you hard (and will just earn you a smack in the mouth one of these days...) and being a stroppy little madam and then demanding respect doesn't make you special nor adult, it just makes you an irritating little ****e (sorry - have to unload... :D)

- People who think they are depressed just because they feel a bit down and go on and on and on and on about it. Seriously - if you're talking about it (esp. to a bunch of strangers online), you more than likely aren't depressed. You're probably just a bit miffed that you're not being allowed to do what you want (if you're a cynic, see above... :p) When you find yourself sitting on the bathroom floor with a bottle of scotch and a handful of pills, then we'll talk - THAT'S depression. Believe me - been there, done that, have the psych report and diagnosis to prove it... ;)

- Sex. Never, ever like it is in the movies. Messy, time consuming and if you've done it right, should leave you feeling ever so slightly sordid afterwards...

- Flavoured Tea. No, it doesn't taste like cherry and raspberry dreams. It tastes like ****.

- Shakespeare. Possibly sacreligious considering my profession, but why the hell we have to teach Shakespeare is beyond me - half the kids can't construct a proper sentence in regular English, so why make them do it with something that is 500 years old and essentially gobbledygook to them? So many people are put off English by Shakespeare - there is just very little relevance to everyday life. And taking it seriously and studying it extensively doesn't make you an intellectual - it makes you a pretentious ****** :D.

- Baths. Hmmmmm, yummy, sitting in a hot swill of your own skin and dirt - nice.... (I am a shower girl, meself!)

- Anime. Not so much the fault of the anime itself, more of the fantards who make it so unbelievably irritating. DA has been absolutely innundated with badly drawn anime characters that all the fantards flock around and squeal 'KAWAAAAIIIIII!!!!!' at, making said artists to falsely believe that they are the bees knees when it comes to fine art. Also, yaoi / hentai isn't risque - it's creepy. This applies doubly to anything involving Naruto, Harry Potter (how on earth the anime yaoi fantards assimilated HP, I will never know...) / any underage/barely legal characters.

- Lager. Once the drink of bimbos, now the drink for those who can't handle real beer. Thin, fizzy and tastes of wee. Get a pint o' London Pride down your necks, you jessies! :D :D

THANK YOU!! My high school drama teacher practically kissed the paper his plays were printed on. Ooh, and we had to memorise every word of his exactly, because they were Shakespeare's words! Even when the plays are seen and not read (which seems to be the proper way to 'experience' Shakespeare's works), there's nothing really earthshaking about them, but part of that could be that Shakespeare is a dead horse that has been flogged for decades now.
