View Full Version : Call to ban petrol cars by 2040

The Lib Dems have backed a radical series of proposals to tackle climate change - including a ban on petrol powered cars by 2040.
Environment spokesman Chris Huhne said tackling global warming would need an "enormous economic change".
He set out plans to make Britain carbon neutral by 2050 at the party's annual conference in Brighton.
The Lib Dems are trying to regain the initiative after high profile Tory and Labour green announcements.

Mr Huhne warned that climate change means "far more wild weather" following the devastating floods over the summer.
Setting out his "green vision", Mr Huhne warned there was little time left to change the way people live.

Hmm, quite radical. In my personal opinion he's going way too far. Luckily, this will probably never happen.

I seriously doubt that this will happen given that time span.

I think this is quite a good Idea that should be taken world wide. And I'm sure that if it goes foward it might be sooner than 2040

I think we'll just be on alternative fuel by that time xD

IMO it's just an extremely liberal dream which wont have much benefit.

Yeah, I think there'd be a lot of people crashing into things at first, I don't mean me though :whi:
But at least there'd be less dead animals in the road :D

That depends on who :mis:

Although whatever fuels the vehicles in the future I reckon they'll tax more, so if the fuel ends up being water, I wonder how much it'll cost :whi:

And how do you power the hovercars? By just hovering? Hovercars will need more energy than normal cars just to keep them up. The elimination of rolling friction is nice, but for speeds larger than 60 kph, it's the air drag that is most important, so it doesn't help solving the problem at all.

Banning petrol cars by 2040 is an interesting idea, and if people were willing to put enough money into it, it would certainly be possible. However, I do not think that it is a really realistic option.

I can build a flying car that requires no non renewable fuel source (to operate).

Do they want us to use electric/solar powerd cars then? :p

at this rate, by 2040 we will not have enough petrol, so this measure will aply it self in time...
the best and most probable alternative is hidrogen powered cars, which would not polute at all, and would only consume water... a part of it! the expeled material would be oxigen, so...
i find that idea radical, but it will happen without our interference

No, it won't, because it doesn't work. Hydrogen powered cars are powered by hydrogen, which differs from water in a lot of exciting ways (such as, it can burn and it's a gas, not a liquid), and their exhaust is water, not oxygen. Instead, hydrogen-powered cars need oxygen to work (just like any normal car).

The big issue with hydrogen powered cars is that hydrogen doesn't come for free. The cheapest way to get it is steam reforming, a method that relies on hydrocarbons just as every normal car these days. Electrolysis sounds like a better idea, but then you need lots of electricity and you have simply put the problem somewhere else.

I'm not saying that hydrogen cars are a bad idea, they might just be what we need in the future, but there are still lots of problems to be solved.

@vespertea: And how will your Jetsons Car be powered? By burning Jetsons?

It will happen, but not in that time frame! more and more companies are making hybrid cars these days.

Personally i hate diesel cars and refuse to have one, but I'm all for other more economical ways of powering cars if they don't make them A:Ugly B:slow C heavy D: expensive to run E: unpractical!

This for example is a brilliant idea shame about the price tag!

ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR - LIGHTNING GT

made by the "lightning car company ( yes I had never herd of them either.)

They are talking about (fully electric car ) with a claimed 0 to 60 of 4 sec,
700 BHP and a possible 200 mph all off a 10 min charge and a 250 mile range
cost is 150,00 ( there talking orders for 2008 deliveries)
Batteries Nanosafe battery technology

there's a few better high-res picture here http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/lightning-gt/ (http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/lightning-gt/)

I guess per-wheel electric motors are the drivetrain of the future, but there are, of course, several problems (mainly that the motor directly gets all impacts from the road surface, so reliability is an issue). I'm interested in seeing how those problems will be solved.

if only... I have a fear that the industrialized nations won't be able to take action in time because many people simply don't care... 'why should we spend time and money on making the world a better place after we're gone anyway?' ... I hope I'm not sounding too pessimistic :p but there's too many things to do for politicians, environmental issues are just one of a hundred issues that need dealt with... I'm very glad that people like Al Gore try to address the public, but then there are certain individuals, like a (dare I say it) Dane, who apparently is getting broadcasted a bit too much in the States these days, who denies the results of some reports or analyses... as long as there are so-called experts who declarify (can't remember the proper word :ton:) the effects of our pollution, the common individual can go to sleep at night, thinking 'oh well, it's not as bad as they say'... I think we need to do something, but unlike many other political priorities, we need to do something now instead of debating whether some numbers are correctly calculated or whatnot...

also, if we could just stop exploiting and cutting down the rain forests, that would help us a great deal to absorb the CO2 ... but I imagine that in the near future, the rain forest (with all its biodiversity) will belong in the past..

If it can be done, I'm all for it. As soon as alternative energy sources are reasonably efficient enough, there's no necessity for petrol powered cars anymore. New technologies will even open new possibilities for research and marketing, so the 'it's too expensive' arugument doesn't really work. It's more a question whether people are willing to make an extra effort by accepting the current limitations of alternate sources in order to protect the environment. Laziness is the problem, not the additional cost every new technology takes to develop - otherwise we'd still use horses and carriages.

If there was hover cars would they land on the ground so we could get on them or would we have to get a ladder to get in them?

I hope they'd land 'cos I'd hate to have to climb down a ladder all the time lol

How about all these problems solved with a teleporter :cln: Eek! Remembered The Fly!
