View Full Version : Lara Croft 3D Model
Hi guys, I'm new here.
Does anyone have a tool to extract Lara 3D model from TR Legend.
I found one called "Model Viewer" but I cannot download it link is broken.
Is there any help?
Hello, you can also use Grave Robber to extract 3d models from the game.
Download link and tutorial on this website (http://www.turfster.be/).
thanks man.
When I finish editing Lara I will post results on this site.
bye.
Hey, -STEFAN-, would you mind uploading the 3D Model? [Unless it's too big]
I wanted to do this, but I can't find my copy of TRL :o.
How do I extract the 3D model from the Graverobber?
I tried but I'm having difficulties :( I read the manual but I don't understand it. I mean I get as far as opening it and beginning to search for it. But when I search nothing happens...:(
If you find out how to do it, tell me : D
Zique did you read the manual?
Izzie404 results are not good. If you still want a model I will upload it to you.

Yes but I didn't understand... I will try to read it again, but, can you upload to me the model of the next generation legend lara? please? ^^

I've been able to extract the Young Lara mesh, except all of her groups are messed up. Importing the OBJ into both Poser or Milkshape shows this.
Is this only with the young model, or is this natural?
Can someone please explain how they managed to do this? Please.
Get trltool from darkfader.net ( Go to darkfader.net/misc/ Link (http://darkfader.net/misc/). You also need .NET 2.0. )
Select TRL in listbox bottom left corner of program.
Navigate to TRL folder with the Bigfiles. ( This is done automatically for full game ).
Look for .drm files with lara named if you want lara models. ( .drm are the packaged model files. )
Extract by dragging and dropping the file to another folder. Open this extracted file in graverobber.
Search list for .trlmodel files. Right click on file and preview if you want to see model.
Tick .trlmodel box and all .trltex checkboxes. ( See graverobber manual (http://turvy.dommel.be/TRL/manual.html) for the easy way )
Press F4 or right click in file content box and select extract and convert.
Model in .obj format and textures should appear in same folder as the extracted .drm file.
Note graverobber can extract the .drm files from the bigfile but when I compared the file contents with that of trltool I found that graverobber identified some .drm files as .mul or .mus files. You can workaround this by extracting the .mul or .mus file with graverobber then renaming it as .drm file and opening this renamed file in graverobber again. However graverobber doesn't have the friendly file names. You'll need to guess which files are wrong. (edit: but not if you use the second list below. Match the hash!)
edit: I resolved this problem by deleting the bigfile.type file that graverobber creates in the TRL folder and generating a new filetype list.
Here's a list of Lara's drm's courtesy of trltool. (http://rapidshare.com/files/62403714/lara_drm_list.txt.html)

Picture of lara_child 3d model (http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc94/nnn59/lara_child.png)
I found a tool that extracts files from the playstation 2 version of the bigfile, bigfile.dat, but have been unable to preview/extract any models. Link (http://www.thelostworlds.net/Software/Soul_Spiral.html)
edit: There's another way to get the 3D models for PC. Use tombripper and extract the .shp files (note this is an arbitrary extension used by Racer_s, author of tombripper, nothing to do with any 3D program's format) and then use Milkshape 3D with Bloodhammer's SHP importer (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1095668&postcount=1). The texture's aren't extracted with the model so you will have to find them and extract with tombripper. I think .shp are the equivalent of .trlmodel files.
edit: Got the SHP importer to open a .trlmodel by deleting the first 16 bytes of the .trlmodel file with a hex editor (i.e. up to PCD9) and renaming it .shp. Haven't got graverobber to open a .shp file yet, .trlmodel files are bigger than .shp so might have to add info.
I found one called "Model Viewer" but I cannot download it link is broken.
Do internet search using the filename that this link points to.

I think the problem is your graphics card/driver. I had the same problem on my computer which is a few years old. When I used the model viewer on a friend's more modern computer as soon as I opened Lara.x the textures were displayed.
edit: Note model viewer is MS dxviewer plus required directx dll plus two lara 3d models (same pose, legend outfit), one in .x format and one in .3ds format plus some .dds textures and can only be used to view (not extract or manipulate) .x models.
If you want to try and solve the problem, searching for info about dxviewer is probably your best bet.
Alternatively, download an old and more versatile demo/trial 3d viewer called "3d exploration". Search for version 1.5. This version is time unlimited. This program can open and convert .x, .obj, .3ds, .max, .lwo and others.
However, 3d exploration doesn't know what .dds files are so you will have to convert them to .tga or .jpg or .bmp. I use irfanview + irfanview plugin pack to do this.
Open Lara.x in 3d exploration and then reassign the textures by clicking on the materials in the object list box, select the map tab and replace the.dds file with the corresponding converted .tga (or.bmp etc) file.
i've been requesting stuff like this for a while.
I'm a photoshop artist, not a 3d artist.
so is there any cheap and easy way to get the 3d model?
EDIT - program looks good, lets hope we can get some wicked poses. i'll post some art i'll get done too.
Sapper - Did I miss something, or how do you go about extracting models to the DirectX model format? I only know of the GraveRobber method to output as an obj but the model isn't extracted properly and comes out terrible.
Hello, you can also use Grave Robber to extract 3d models from the game.
Download link and tutorial on this website (http://www.turfster.be/).
WOW thaks :D
Great website but.. i still can't get Lara!, Could someone send the .obj file of her to me in PM or Email, in the normal Legend outfit. Thanks, :D:)
Qasar, shades, Dizzydoil.
Lara in normal Legend outifit in .x and .3ds format included with the Model Viewer download.
I feel like a moron. I googled the filename of Racer_S's model viewer and found it on File Front. I thought it was gone for good : )

I've seen some threads about a program called "3d ripper dx". Can't run it on my PC though (old graphics card).

i'm having a bit of trouble...how do you know what drm files are the 3d model? when you can only preview "raw" slightly confusing....
can someone help please.
You have to extract the .drm files. Then, you load the .drm files and you'll see the 3d models with each set of corresponding textures. :)

Yes, but.. which .drm is Lara? Theres thousands with laods of names like 456H-U8975.drm :o:D
A model of Lara = a version of Lara in game. There's a ton of models of Lara in all these files.
For example, the model named 039EA526_FFFF.drm is the 3d model of Lara where she's wearing the snowsuit (I think it's the next gen mode - not sure, I haven't extracted the 3d model). :)

going to have to get 3d studio max/maya to get anywhere with this.
Could someone please post screenies of any cool 3d poses you can do once messing with the model.
Like these.

stuff like this achievable?

Blender could probably do it too. Steep learning curve though.

Did you use trltool to extract the .drm files? It gives friendly filenames. See image for trtool used on TRL demo. Two Lara models found.

So, after ripping the Lara Croft model, she has rigging and morph information still embedded in her that can't be read by programs like Milkshape?
Or do you have to re-rig her and recreate her morphs even if you had 3DS Max?
Only geometry is extracted. Unless Crystal Dynamics releases an SDK, we are limited to what the community can decompile from the binary game files.

Did you pose her, especially the ponytail, or was that the original geometry?

Found who rigged & posed her here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=59951) plus some other great renderings.

A .rar file is a compressed file, similar to .zip. You have to uncompress to get the graverobber.exe file. The following freeware/shareware programs will do the job for you. Search the internet for them.
7-zip
Filzip
UltimateZip

1. Check Show Textures in view menu is ticked.
2. Open material panel by selecting Material Panel in Panel menu.
3. Double click on a material to open Material Property screen.
4. Meta has "lost" the texture file. Browse to the correct file using the Ref button and the shortened name Meta displays in the box as a guide.

can anyone upload the .obj model or .x or .dfx, doesn't matter, I JUST NEEEEEEED her =D
The UV maps on the extracted models use the next-gen textures (if those are the textures that come in three versions each).
I want to try some of the tombripper textures that the modders post at tombraiderhub but these use the other textures. For example in the bikini textures at tombraiderhub the bikini is in the same texture as the torso skin, not separate as for the extracted model.
Anyone know how to map to these other textures?
Can we extract levels?
Search for info on 3D ripper DX. I think this rips the geometry of everything on screen at the time you rip. Never used it though PC not powerful enough.

I think it's possible if you replace the dds. files when modding. :)

Yes if you modify the .dds textures. But the extracted models seem to use the next gen textures only. I have been unable to use any of the non next gen textures (i.e. normal textures) extracted with tomb ripper from tombraiderhub (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/tr7/modding/index.html).
Don't know how the normal textures get mapped to the model.

If we rip the model can it be imported to 3DS Max for renders and animations?
If we rip the model can it be imported to 3DS Max for renders and animations?
Yes. But you will have to rig the model in 3ds max first to animate it.
That is, create the skeleton and assign which vertices move with which bone and how adjoining bones and the vertices of adjoining bones move when you move a particular bone. You may need to fix up the grouping too. Its all over the place. Hopefully everyone is doing this as I'm keen to see some renders of Lara in differing poses in this forum.
Hopefully someone creates a tool to extract the model with this info direct from the .drm file.
You can make as many renders as you want of Lara in her crucifix pose though! - with modified textures if you want!
Note creating movies/poses/renders/games using characters from TR1 - TR4 is now simpler for those who know how to use Blender. See this thread. (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=111294)

Could someone post the head of the AOD-Legend model buried in Peru? Just the head as an .obj format?
Okay... I have extracted the files of TRA and i can see alot of TGA files and 1 obj file which is 1kb. Is this possible??
What i do! I opend trltool and opend the TRA bigfile 000, which needed... I looked for lara and extracted Lara-classic. I opend the file in Graverobber and selected all the .trltex files... I extracted them and i see alot of TGA files... 1 .obj file of 1kb..
So i opend Metasequoia and try to open the .obj file for the TRA classic Model... It doesn't work and i've read all of the post in this thread... I just don't understand everything....
What do i have to do now?? Or what did i do wrong??
Could someone post the head of the AOD-Legend model buried in Peru? Just the head as an .obj format?
Yes, could someone? I can try to texture it...
I opend the file in Graverobber and selected all the .trltex files...
Did you make sure the .trlmodel files were selected too?
Highlight one of the .trlmodels in the list and see if you get a preview of the model before extracting just to check it is a model of Lara.

What are those??? They aren't in the list... The only think i see is: UNKNOWN and .trltex...
.trlmodel are the 3D model. I don't have TRA so I can't check but I assume they are there somewhere.
In TRL there's usually 3 trlmodels for each Lara. The good version and some other incomplete low poly versions. I don't know what they are for. When you select files for extraction do it the way the graverobber tutorial instructs. I.e right click in the list, choose select... and then type trl in the box. This should select all trltex and all trlmodel, if any.
If you aren't seeing any it may pay to delete/rename bigfile.type in the TRA folder. Check the mod date on this file but I'm pretty sure graverobber creates it. Then run graverobber again and get it to create typelist again. I don't know if this is necessary but it might work.
Also extract another drm with trltool and check if you get a trlmodel in graverobber.
I've got the TRL-models... I converted them and i placed 1 model (with all the meshes) into metaquoia... Now what???
Give her bones, animate or pose her and show us a render or movie!
Only kidding. What do you want to do?
Texture her? There's an earlier post in this thread about that.
Cut her up and use her bits as dxf? The models extracted with graverobber are not as easy to cut up as the 3DS that comes with the laramodelviewer.zip because the model isn't divided into sub objects nicely but you could still do it.
Use Blender to turn her into a trmsh you can use in your .TR4? See the import/export with Blender thread in Leveleditor forum.
I'd like you to give her bones, animate her and make an animated, interactive, 3D, exe file like one I saw in the Blender gallery awhile ago.
Well, i'm not good at it.. I'm just beginning...
But i would like to texture her and use her in my project.... How do i save these part??? I think i know how to cut her in pieces, but how do i save every single part of lara???
Unfortunately, GraveRobber isn't compatible (well, not entirely compatible) with TRA. If you extract all the .drm files of the bigfile with trltool than look at them with GraveRobber you'll see you'll have access only to all the textures files for each object. It's impossible to see or get the 3d model of each object, contrary to Legend. I noticed that recently... ^^
Hi guys.
I downloaded te TR-Legend Demo some weeks ago and used trtool to rip the models. It worked great, but now I deleted the Demo and installed the full game. When I select "Tomb Raider Legend" on the left side of trtool, the program shows me an ERROR. So I can't rip more models of the game... :(
I redownloaded the program again and the ERROR still appears. I have absolutely no idea how to solve this problem...
Can anyone help? :o

You can edit them.
But no one has found a way to put them back into the game.

I don't have a solution but just wanted to say I left the demo installed when I installed the full game and trltool automatically used the full game folder after that. TRL demo and TRL were installed to the default locations.

Does tombripper work with TRA?
Didn see this thread.
I extracted the AOD model from Peru but found lara useless since her hands, arms, braid are stuck to her body. So cannot animate them.
I extracted the AOD model from Peru ...
What program did you use?
For the buried Lara I extracted it too (I simply used 3d Reaper DX), but I'm still searching for it in the .drm files (in case she would have a normal posture). I didn't find it yet, because this object may be considered as mesh... ^^
Does tombripper work with TRA?
Yes. I think it should be possible to obtain the 3d objects with the method you explained. I may try later...
For the buried Lara I extracted it too

Yea use 3d ripper to rip out a scene from a game, really handy, though hard to animate becuase the characters arent in star pose. Its like taking a screenshot but 3d view.
Unfortunately it looks like Tombripper only rips textures from TRA. I tried with the demo. No shp files listed.
Found a TRA Lara model here (http://darkmatter.de-coder.net/index.php?showtopic=789) though in obj format.

Wow!
How do you texture that though? When you try and select a bit to texture, all of it is selected.
Okay... I know how to texture the TRA model now, but i'm having some problems with it...
When i load, for example, the face textures, i automaticly copies it to her eyebrows...
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z222/TRF_photo/Laraseyebrows.jpg
I can texture her face, but her eyes will be under her own eyes, and her eyebrows are going to be under her eye textures...
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z222/TRF_photo/Laraseyes.jpg
How can i fix this???
EDIT: NEVERMIND... I 've got it....
Sorry I didn't keep it. But I'll probably extract her again some day if I don't find her in the .drm files.
Ah well, thanks anyway:). Thanks for the link to anniversary lara, sapper. Has anyone extracted AOD lara?

Never used 3D studio max. ( Don't know if you can get enough info from this old tute. Had to link to internet archive since 3Dkingdom site offline until January it seems. The pictures in the tute are missing unfortunately. Link (http://web.archive.org/web/20040817061549/http://www.3dkingdom.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=351&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0))
edit: 3Dkingdom back online so here's the link. (http://3dk.org/tutorial/Modeling-Texturing-and-Animating-low-poly-Lara-Croft-in-3ds-max-Part-I-.html)
I used Blender. The model was already split into sections according to materials. The obj importer has this option.
Note. I think I used the wrong texture for the gear & backpack! The material name in Meta is same as texture name so got the right texture in meta.
In the shareware version of Meta you can use the materials panel to texture as per my earlier post. Freeware version (2.1) didn't list any materials. The fact the obj doesn't come with a mtl file may be the problem.

edit: My first attempt to get her head in game (trle) here (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2271371&postcount=61). Texturing not good because I can't get Trviewer to take the head without consolidating the textures. Note this isn't a good model to use since there is some distortion.
Hi everyone, I just tried this awesome tool 3D Ripper DX and extracted the TRA model. These are my results after I played with the polygon count in Cinema4D ;)

Yeah, I increased the polygoncount, so this model got 3 times more polygons than in the game. But as you might see, it doesn't work on all edges (e.g. her legs).
somebody could make the lara's bones?

So I have found out a lot since an hour :) I managed to extract Lara's Bikini Model with GraveRobber and have the drm. file on my desktop now. Now I need 3D Studio Max or what? To make Renders like FunnyML?
I try to export the Lara model in Meta it says that the texture names are to long, so I made them shorter, and it STILL says it :(

I tried to edit the Legend suit model posted by Pedorrin in Metasequoia and the textures came out really weird. Can anybody tell me what I did wrong?
That must be because they must be compatible with files *. mtl, which is the texture map, I use Cybermotion v12.0-Designer 3D, Autodesk 3DS Max8, Cinema 4D Release 10 and MilkShape 3D 1.8.1b. And in all my works well, except in the 3DS, texture mapping is different, but it has very good results in animation.
Does anyone have one of those who use the modding TexMod for the Anniversary, it seems the Tomb Raider's Lara Underworld?, To be able to extract so obvious that what I am going to rise, to be unloaded.
I just go up to the network Lara white bikini Tomb Raider - Legend

Do you use all of them? Or can you only use one?
It depends on what the use, besides some are more simples.
But I recommend the Autodesk 3DS Max8.
For example MilkShape 3D 1.8.1b import and export multiple formats.
That answer your question?
how did you get the bone-struct? i can only extract the meshes :S
So far the models are extracted without bones, one has to make it.

Under ground of the Peru-Flashback there is a model of the early development of Legend. They want you to rip it ;).
someone extracted it a while ago and tried to make it animated but it failed :P
That model is accesable(spelling?) with flight tool and is in that place there Amanda talks to lara (jason's dead! everybody's dead!!!).There are two models for some strange reason...and some gunpowder...

So how exactly do I map the textures in Blender?
So how exactly do I map the textures in Blender?
The easiest way to get the models extracted with graverobber into Blender already textured is to edit the associated .mtl file. The .mtl file is a text file so use notepad.
Change the texture names appearing in the last line of each block so they match the actual texture file names using the replace command in notepad's edit menu.
That is, replace 5264D4E6#pc-w`00000008.tga with 5264D4E6#pc-w`cine_lara_00000008.tga for example.
In notepad's replace command in the Find what field put "\5264D4E6#pc-w`" (no quotes!) and in the Replace with field put "\5264D4E6#pc-w`cine_lara_" (no quotes!) and replace all.
Save the file.
Now when you import the .obj into Blender and switch to texture mode your model should already be textured. Worked for me.
By the way I had no problems texturing pedorrin's model in the shareware Meta.
The invert V mapping box should be checked when you open the .obj perhaps.
Maybe you could PM TRF. He fixed his texture problem in meta. See his post earlier in this thread.
edit: Got the model textured already into meta by editing the .mtl file as above and copying all the texture .tga files into meta's texture folder. Instead of editing the .mtl file you could rename the texture .tga files to match those in the .mtl file.
Here's an extract of the original .mtl file open in notepad. See that the filenames in the map lines don't match the actual texture .tga files.

Need more info. Is it a TRL model extracted with graverobber you are trying to texture?
Editing the .mtl file as above works for Milkshape too.
If it is another model you're trying to texture it may not have been UV mapped. Can't help you much with that.
In Milkshape it looks like you use the material tab to assign textures.

Just though I would say that "laramodelviewer.zip" (can be found here (http://files.filefront.com/laramodelviewerzip/;4963116;/fileinfo.html)) contains a *.3ds (3DS Max scene) and *.x (DirectX) model of Lara, alongside the *.dds textures. I use Blender (http://www.blender.org/) and imported the *.x model without any issues (*.3ds didn't work/work very well). You can UV map the textures to Lara in UV face select model (probably will need to convert them to PNG first though).
For tutorials etc. I recommend the Blender Wiki (http://wiki.blender.org) and the Blender: Noob to Pro Wikibook (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro).
Sorry if you were looking for tutorials using Daz studio (can't say I've ever used it) - but Blender is just brilliant once you get used to it :D.

ok a few mins ago I had the model in Blender, now its telling me that there is an error and it can't load it. I didn't really do anything to it lol, couldn't figure out how to load the textures.
Ok found the problem lol I was trying to open, not import.
Open Blender. Right-click on the Cube to select it and press Delete to delete it.
Then go to:
File >> Import >> DirectX(.x)...
And import "lara.x".
When I imported lara.x it imported it as a *very* large model. So before you press anything else press "S" (scale), enter "0.001" then hit "Enter". That will scale it to 1000ths of the size (a reasonable size for use in the default scene). Then you should see the model etc. - use the "Blender QuickStart" PDF guide which comes with Blender to start you off (just look in "Program Files >> Blender Foundation >> Blender").
Arite.

Ok, got the model scaled, but I'm still having trouble getting textures to work. I'm not sure exactly what I need to do in order to import the textures that came with the model viewer, after that I think I can figure out how to apply em. I'm a noob at this so please bear with me lol.
Just changed the .dds to PNG.
Ok I got the textures in, but I accidently textured her whole body with one texture...
boilmashstew
08-02-08, 01:44
ok I'm stuck at the point where I need to actually apply the textures to her. I can't seem to get them to load in the right spots, one texture just covers the whole model. I'm not sure what to do...
OK - my mistake. I said the *.3ds import wouldn't work, however it does - and works a lot better than the *.x import. The *.x import just imports one single large mesh - not much use for texturing etc. The 3DS Max import works well since each section of the body is split into different object (also was scaled correctly).
So instead import lara.3ds (could just open a new Blender scene and do it).
The texture in the 3ds import are also there - only they are linked to the *.dds files which Blender cannot read.
Since I have already converted them to PNG files here they are (just contains PNG versions of the DDS textures):
http://www.mediafire.com/?cdmbxbodyfv
OK - so if you right click on a section of lara, then click on where it says "Object mode" and select "UV Face Select". Now click on the little mesh icon at the corner of the 3D section and select "UV/Image Editor". You should see the mesh unwrapped, and that section should be assigned to a *.dds file texture. Click on "Image >> Open..." and select the PNG equivilant. Move the UV unwrapped sections around so that they fit.
Go back into 3D view and select "Texture Mode" (alongside "UV Face Select", "Edit Mode" etc.). You should now see Lara with the texture mapped to her.
Arite.

how do I move the purple stuff onto the PNG? I can't seem to figure out what to do from this step lol.
Good work so far :). Use the "A" key to select/deselect all - although in that case it isn't needed. Instead, assuming nothing is selected, press "B" to do a rectangle select and just select the large square section (at the top left of the image). Once it is selected press "G" to grab, and move to the image/texture. If you hold "Ctrl" whilst moving it will do it in block/integer spaces along the grid (if you do that it should slot nicely onto the texture). Click the left mouse button to lock it in the new place.
EDIT: Once the large section is in place - select one of the other large bits from e.g. the right and place it in the texture that is a similar shape to it.
END OF EDIT.
Arite.
boilmashstew, if you manage/managed to map the textures then in order to render it properly each mesh needs to be set to smooth. To do that, in Object Mode, select a mesh section and click on the edit section of the button menu. Select "Set Smooth". This needs to be done for all meshes for Lara to be rendered smooth.
Also, to display the textures in the rendered output "TexFace" needs to be enabled for all the used materials. Select an object and click on the "Material buttons" section (or just press "F4"). Select "TexFace".
To render just press F12.
Here is my render of Lara UV-mapped textured in Blender:

Thanks for the help, sorry I'm such a noob lol. I'll post again soon as I can. Once I finish the texturing, will I be able to load the model into a program like Maya or 3dsmax to add bones for posing etc?
ok I got the model but I can't figure out how to move the texture or the UV stuff to fit on the picture....
...how do I move the purple stuff onto the PNG? I can't seem to figure out what to do from this step lol.
You don't need to move it & shouldn't.
Check by editing the .mtl for pedorrin's model as above then import the .obj into Blender. Switch to texture mode.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc94/nnn59/editbar.png
(I.e. the box next to where it says UV face select or Object Or Edit mode) and the model should be textured correctly. If you then switch to UV face mode and select one of the faces on the model and check in a UV/Image editor window you will see that the UV meshes aren't located on the image.
Once I finish the texturing, will I be able to load the model into a program like Maya or 3dsmax to add bones for posing etc?
Yes but you could import the .3ds or .obj direct into 3dsmax & texture in max if necessary.
You could also use Blender to add bones and create animations.
To get pedorrin's Lara models into Milkshape first edit the .mtl as above then import wavefront obj. To see the model textured right click on the viewport and check textured.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc94/nnn59/milklarasmall.png
To get pedorrin's Lara models into DazStudio Import wavefront obj. In the view menu select tabs and then surfaces. Then for each material in the list hit the button under diffuse that says none and browse for the texture file. I printed out the .mtl file which links the material names to the texture files. I don't know how to pose models in DazStudio yet though!

Look at her boots, theres stuff missing I reinstalled the viewer too and used a new model. It goes on her backpack and Gun rig too. I'm going to look and see if I missed anything, but if you guys know anything, please help me lol.
Ok I changed the texture and the same area has pieces missing so I think it has something to do with the model itself. Any ideas on what i should do next?

ok when I import Pedorrin's model I get the same missing pieces... :hea: Did I do something to it
The boots should render fine in Blender. The reason it looks messed up is because the faces are on both sides.
Here is a render preview:

I downloaded TRA Lara from the link on page 10 before it was broken. pedorrin uploaded it here (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2461850&postcount=146) for us though. Only 3D ripper dx rips meshes from TRA at the moment. Tombripper rips the textures.
@boilmashstew I don't know more than you about bones etc. The "missing" faces in the boots and gear on the models can be fixed in edit mode by selecting the face and then in the mesh menu select normals and flip. This seems to be a problem with Blender's import routine, Meta doesn't mess up the normals.
See the bottom of this post (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2306074&postcount=64) for how to get TR1-4 rooms into 3DS format.

Doing a basic rig isn't too hard (although a detailed rig with the right contraints etc. is). For some information about rigging see here (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_Character_Animation/Rigging).

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna try adding bones to the legend Lara. One more thing, when I go to render, it only shows a grey model of Lara from the neck down...
Got to hit texface as per Arite's instruction for each object that makes up Lara. You've probably only done it for the head.

oh ok, thanks lol
Hi, thanks first of all!
I have a problem, when I import the anniversary lara to blender she doesn't have any textures on her, even in renderwindow she is only grey.
The Textures are listed in blender though...
any idea what's wrong?
You need to re-assign each object/part of Lara to e.g. a PNG version of the DDS textures since Blender cannot read *.dds.
See this post for how to do that:
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2478267&postcount=180
Either download the *.png files that I converted, or you can do it yourself using e.g. Photoshop (with the DDS plugin). Also you will need to move certain sections of the unwrapped mesh so that it fits onto the texture (read the past two or three pages of this thread to see how to do that).
Finally - to view the textures (once they are mapped properly) in the render output select "TexFace" for each material.
Cheers, Arite.
Here's a thread (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=119177) worth keeping an eye on. Achilles_DS modelling a version of TRU Lara in MAYA.

For the Eyelash prob, the solution is to use the file 052.tga as the opacity filter of the material with alpha source from the image.

I found that in the TRA model part of Lara's eyelash, top far left of her upper left eyelash was in fact mapped to the wrong texture. I wonder if this is an error caused by extraction or is present in the game?

Can anyone rip the textures from Lara's Home Gym outfit?
I'm not quite sure how to do it, can you give a little more detailed information? :(
You juste need to use the file 052.tga as map for the material used on the Eyelash.
In 3DS Max, you will have a map like this where alpha source is from the tga file :
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6214/eyelashmaphh1.th.jpg (http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=eyelashmaphh1.jpg)
and a material like this :
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4601/eyelashmaterialqt0.th.jpg (http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=eyelashmaterialqt0.jpg)
You can also use the map for the color of the eyelash.
I hope this help you this time.
I'm not quite sure how to do it, can you give a little more detailed information? :(
Try this page. (http://members.tripod.com/~funky_munky/tuts/blender/transtex.htm)
It uses an older version of Blender but you'll find the buttons it mentions. You don't need the black & white version of the picture this info is already in 052 just use 052 both times.
Awesome stuff;) :jmp:Thanks everyone!
Instead of extracting her from the game, why not have a try to create your own version of her in 3Ds Max? It will give you good practice on your 3D skills, CD uses 3Ds Max 9 to create Tomb Raider Games.

You can't animate or pose with meta. You can with blender but I don't know why you can't import the obj file. Only graverobber will open drm files btw.
A simple, free animator you may want to try is misfit model 3d. It opens obj and you can add bones and animate. Get an old version. The animation editor seems to work better than in the latest version.

Is it possible to extract other characters such as Amanda or Larson, if so could anybody upload them pleeeease, I don't have the pc versions.
wow... i thought i would be the only one crazy enough to try this lol
so i come here and find a massive thread already about 3D rendering... fantastic!!!
anyway, i've been working on a project for a 3D lara desktop of her walking out of a jungle river... so i figured i'd wander on here and show you what i've got so far and some steps through...
ok, this is my first wire mesh... don't laugh too hard, i know it's a mess, but i learnt a lot from this pose and figured out how to improve what i did wrong...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/wire.png
ok, a texture over the wireframe in basic white gives me some idea of what the model will actually look like when finished... and lets me know that there are a few problems with it...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/flat.png
Add color and texture... yes, i know she's bald... hair is the last thing i work on, it's too fiddly... so we add the color and texture for everything and pray for devine guidence... it failed...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/cartoon.png
yup, wtf is going on with her arm... yet another thing to fix... a final passover adds more texture, lighting and shadow so you can get an idea of how the final product will look...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/render1.png
So, that's my first Lara model... i'm currently working on a much better model that will hopefully fix all the problems such as the skin allignment and the 'saggyness' in this one, but overall i think i've got the basic form down, it's just little tweaks and finishes that i need to add later on to finish her off...
thoughts anyone?
M
Looks good apart from the things you've already pointed out. But I think that the glasses are way too transparent and Lara doesn't have blue eyes. She has brown/orange eyes.
ok, having learnt quite a lot from my first pass... i decided today to take a second look at the Lara model... personally i wasn't really happy with how the first came out so i decided to work a bit simpler this time and try and make the clothes a bit more tomb rader'ish, use a pose i know from Tomb Raider and add the usual equipment...
now that was painful, after going through some of the TR:L Files though, i finally found what i needed and used them as a basis to create my own wire meshes for my Lara...
yeah... it's a real mess... it gets better though, i promise...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/wireframe.png
Ok, once i was (Reasonably) happy with the wire mesh frame, i started work on the basic textures. first working in plain white so i could get a feel for it and see where the clothes and skin would lay incase i needed to go back to the wire frame and edit some mistakes out (yeah.... i went back about a dozen times :p)
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/flatshade.png
once i was happy with how the flat shade was doing, i started to add light and shadow onto the texture to check where everything would be lit from... this brought the model properly into 3D and allowed me to make the neccesary changes to the textures to make it more lifelike...
:edit: sorry the glasses are in black, i was working on that part of the model at the time and it highlighted them when i took the screencap... Doh!
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/cartoon-1.png
Once the shadow and lighting was done... and after many, many mugs of coffee and cigarettes later... i was finally ready to add the color.... for this test i decided to sort of blend Lara and the Doppleganger together to give her a slightly darker look that i was familier with from Underworld...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/passrender.png
Soi the color's went on nicely over the shadow and lighting, muting them slightly but letting the texture and color really come through...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/secondrender.png
ok, looking at the second render i know i really need to work on the hair some more and bring the shade down from red slightly... and change the hotpants from leather lol

Ehm, If I remember well Lara's nose is more "pepper" shaped. Just look at her profile, you'll see what I was saying ;) Can't wait to see final version :)
yeah... putting them side by side i can see the difference in the nose...
i modeled the cheek bones more on Angelina than the game version of Lara...

hi! nice work! are u using poser? the result is really good, i've never been sucesfull with it, i'm fine just with 3ds max O_ò
keep up the good work and let us see the finished work :jmp:
have u ever heard about Irina Adventuress? she's a poser character inspired to lara, she's really cool :P
http://i33.tinypic.com/2mxo1lz.jpg
that one does look like the dopplehoe lol
i'm using poser for the final render conversions but BVH and Lightwave for the original mesh work...
oh, and photoshop for the texturing lol
nah, i didn't know about Irina... doesn't look too much like Lara to me lol i'm trying to make it as close to the game Lara as i can
M
Looks good, methos :tmb:!
But the shorts are WAY too short. I don't know why. But all the fanmade Lara models look the same :p. Dark Legend top and too short shorts and the classic round glasses...lol.
ok, test three...
the pose was a lot easier to do this time as i already had the full wire mesh at hand, it only left me a bit of editing to do to get the final pose i wanted... this time though i decided to do more of a 'classic' Lara costume in opposition to the Legend/Underworld costumes i was working with before...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/wire-1.png
the basic flat shading actually went on a treat... really happy with it...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/cartoon-2.png
Adding a flat color ontop of the shading and bringing the lighting and shadow back really brought the render to life, i went back a bit at this stage and edited the wireframe a bit as she looked a bit 'flat' to me...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/test.png
After the shading and lighting were added and i was happy with them, i ran the textures over and retested everything to make sure it was all good...
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/flyby.png
finally happy with everything i clicked the 'render' button and went for a mug of coffee while i prayed for it to come out alright lol
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/methosivanhoe/new%20tomb%20raider/final.png
so this is my third pass at Lara Croft... a lot better than my last two, the nose should look a lot better and the more 'classic' look feels a lot better... it still feels like Dopplehoe invaded the classic games though lol

Nice renders Methos (i'm a user of Poser myself...well, more specifically, Daz Studio). Did you use Victoria3 or Victoria4.2?
4.2 exported into BVH for mesh editing and then into Lightwave to change the 'joints'...
i never liked the basic victoria, so many of the joints and wireframe points and so harsh and out of allignment, BVH and Lightwave let me smooth them down and edit the frame to my own needs
