IT IS just what the work-shy, fickle and unfaithful have been waiting for.

A new software program allows mobile phone users to disguise where they are calling from - providing the perfect alibi, was unveiled yesterday.

All you have to do is select one of a number of background sounds, including a traffic jam, roadworks, a dentist's surgery and the circus.

The Romanian company Simeda which offers the SounderCover download says unashamedly: "Do you wake up late for work and you want your boss to think you're caught in traffic? Select the Traffic Jam background and give him a call from your bedroom."

There is even the sound of another phone ringing, so you can get rid of an unwanted chatterbox by saying someone is calling your landline.

On its website, Simeda adds: "Pretend you're at the dentist, in the park, on the street, caught in a thunderstorm, near heavy machinery or at a circus parade. The possibilities are endless!!"

Users can also save their own pre-recorded sounds, or sounds downloaded from the Internet.

The sound is triggered by pressing the "down" key on the phone whenever a call is made or received.

A notification at the top of the screen shows that the software is active.

SounderCover will initially work only with selected Nokia phones and a free demo version limited to nine non-looping backgrounds can be obtained from www.simeda.com/soundercover.html. (http://www.simeda.com/soundercover.html.)
