View Full Version : why are not the movies following the games plot?
i wonder... why are the movies not inspired in the games plot? like having TR1 movie like TR1 game and so on? feel free to close if you find this irrelevant!
There are a few reasons as to why but the one I would most go with is this: The story lines for the games aren't as easily adaptable to a film script. This can be argued and has been, but another point to look at is that in the games, Lara is for the most part, by herself. Kind of hard to have a good movie if it's just Lara all the time.
indeed, looking it by that perspective it would make a very boring movie! well at least in the first movie they made a bit of reference to some part of the games, i enjoyed the living statues, that reminded me of TR3... well honestly i enjoy the movies, but i always questioned myself why not the games plot!
thanks for the enlightment Burns! ;)
It would be nice to have plots as well-planned as the games. For example Core's version of TR1 would be a great movie, since it is so full of characters with interesting personalities. There could be several views of the movie, not just constant Lara. More detail could be added to the Atlantean creatures, like why they look so fleshy. What happened to the city in details, etc. I could see some great scenes coming out of that.
It's not likely we will be seeing a TR3 movie in the next years, but it's always an interesting thought.
Totally off topic: Matt, love the avatar. :tmb:
On topic: Meh, probably won't see a third movie but for the time being, it's fun to speculate. :D

what? we might not get a new movie? :yik:
because thats how they make every movie bsed on a game/comic/book nowadays! they deside they can be more original then the original! Idiots. And then poeple wonder why 99% of those movies are incredibly dull!
Plus comes down to copyright issues as well; this way they only have to pay to use the character and not the entire storyline, plus I prefer having a new storyline for a movie anyway, not the game rehashed.
Well, Paramount does have the movie rights, but like Admles has pointed out, the rights may not have included using story lines from the games. Of course, they could have the full rights to the stories as well and just decided that they wouldn't work as well. It's a shame that instead of focusing on a good story, they just rely on what the key demographics want to see.
I really want to see a movie version of TR2 and TR4 or Anniversary those are my TOP 3 TR games!!!

TR2: I can already imagine a poorly-made CGI dragon. However it would be interesting.
TR4: That could be a good final movie, and actually have her die like she was supposed to. Then they wouldn't have to worry about a third movie. But that would be a difficult task to keep it interesting as a movie, since TR4 was a puzzle-based, long game with few enemies.
TRA: I don't think it would sell well as a movie. Just since we've experienced it twice already. I'd rather see the original though, it had more interesting characters such as the Atlantean creatures. They looked more scary.
Over-all with your choices, I'd go with TR4.

They did that so people can appreciate it better than having the same plot.

Based on the plot, who wrote the TRL plot is absolutely clever because the plot in it is very magnificent and very well written...
But ofcourse i dont want a TRL movie.. it wil be ridiculous...
Howvere TR2 or TR4/5 can make a good one..
TR4 is about Von Croy and in TR5 there is also VCi at the end where she stals the artefact so they may start the movie with the VCI buildings...
Will look awsome to see Lara playing a great hitman secretive stealthy girl...
TR1.. well it is nicem but a story about Atlantis will just be like,, oh well... everyone knows it..
Immortality... very crazy created stuff about atlantis wont be as interesting as making a stiry about teh dagger of Xian..
The army as well as in floating islands is awsome..
New creatures that are strong and scary is much better than having vampires that shoot fire and bombs in the place...
TR2 will make a magnificen decent story...
It has many great places for explorationa.. it can be scary at the same time and full o action..
Just imagine the Maria Doria on the Big Screen...
The temple of Xian...
The floating Islands...
Man, thi will look a cool movie..
It is better than wasting money on a movie based on going back in time..
The first movie could have been better if only the artefact was not about time and ruling God's Power.. This is total craziness....
second movie, i liked it more, but still, it was as if searching for something that it never exists as well..
a box that does what... unleashes pain???
How?
It was an unfinished movie, although its end was brilliant...
so a TR2 movie will rock...

Agreed! :)

that's true :vlol:
and yes a TR4 movie for the ending of the series would be good imo... maybe one of the most spectacular deaths in the movie history :p

Well I always liked such an ending in TR..
That's why in COL, I thought it was Lara who got shot at first...
TR movies has different story because it shot NOT for fans of TR. It shot for ordinary people. And TR2-3-4-AoD` too "rich" for Hollywood studies
I always thought the TR2 storyline would make an excellent action/adventure movie. TR4 would be great as well, on a little more epic note, but it would probably come out so much like the Mummy that it wouldn't be fun anymore.

Lara is for the most part, by herself. Kind of hard to have a good movie if it's just Lara all the time.
What about Tom Hanks in Castaway?
I think it could work. If Lara is being chased by dinosaurs and stuff it'd still be interesting.
AOD is the only realistic posability for a good adaption. The others just wouldn't work.
TR1/TRA has been done twice now. It could be a good film but most people will either be bored of the plot or constantly pick away every little difference between the three versions.
TR2 won't work because Lara is alone for the majority of the time which does NOT work in film.
TR3 didn't have much of a plot. It was 5 random locations tied together by a loose backstory. It's too big a chance of being "by-the-numbers" like the previous films.
TR4 is too unoriginal. The concept has been done to death many times in film and television.
TR5's storylines (both main and flashbacks) can't work unless it's incorperated into one of the other game's plots.
Legend's plot isn't exactly liked by fans, too much globetrotting for its own good, requires Legend 2 to also be adapted, means we have to put up with Zip and Alister and the return of Lara's parents.

In the movie they'd be Hillary and Brice.
I actually liked Zip and Alister though

Well the games are kinda...um...wierd. lol.
I honestly don't wanna see bacon lara on the big screen lol. The only one that would make for a really good movie is probably AOD..the rest are too far into the science fiction realm to make good sense with the Tomb Raider feel. imo.

Um, actually, I think the storyline in Legend is amazing, so don't make assumptions.

The writers didn't play the games. they want to be creative on their own, which is always misleading and flawed.

I guess it would be pretty pointless to have the same story both in game and in he movie. dunno, but I'd like to see AOD as a movie.

Eventually someone will get the brilliant idea to reinvent the franchise with a new actress. If they followed suit of recent blockbusters such as Batman, Superman, James Bond, and soon The Saint, and made an origin story, I think they'd have a real money maker on their hands. Cast some no name actress who is young and could carry the franchise through three or four new films. Also, they need to drop the horribly cheezy campiness in each movie and take it seriously. I cringe everytime I watch TR and see the scene with Angelina being pulled along by the dogs with that awful techno music. Its up there with Greedo shooting first.
I also think the series would work great on television.
I've always wanted to produce a Tomb Raider spec script for my writing portfolio and may add that to my 2008 resolutions. Anyone else attempted one before?
Um, actually, I think the storyline in Legend is amazing, so don't make assumptions.
actually what is happening now is that the games are turning movi-ish i can almost say any games from 2007 and onward is using lots of movie special action effect.

I was mentioning reasons why the other games won't work - that paragraph referring to Legend. In MY opinion. First point on the story, which was separated from the other points by a comma. What I said isn't an assumption - it isn't exactly liked by fans. Which when people say that usually mean the vast majority - it's common sense. And I said "isn't exactly liked by fans". I didn't say they hated it completely. There are those who did enjoy the King Arthur aspect, so don't get so worked up.
Cheers! :ton:

I think a fair follow up to Legend, which I love, would be to follow suit with what Valve has done with the Half-Life 2 episodes. Keep the same engine and publish short adventures every few months (not every 18 months like Valve). Tomb Raider has always had that serial feel to it and I think embracing that attitude could do wonders for it.
Wishful thinking I'm sure.

You just contradicted yourself sooooo much....
Anyways TR: Legend is by far the most adaptable to a movie...
And the story is amazing and so is the cliffhanger...
They could revamp the whole TR movie franchise with it and pretend like the first two didn't happen...

I guess it is just give people a breather. We played the game and know how it ends. Same for the other games in the series. The movies create new situations for Lara to be in. Even in interviews with the director and producer, they say how parts of the movies are influenced by the game. Liek in the first TR movie. When Lara's home is attacked by Powel's men. That scene was inspired by TR2. Statues wer inspired by TR3. Etc,etc.
Its up there with Greedo shooting first.
NOTHING can be as bad as Greedo shooting first.
That said, I think AOD would make an amazing film.

This can be argued and has been, but another point to look at is that in the games, Lara is for the most part, by herself. Kind of hard to have a good movie if it's just Lara all the time. It can be done. There are many movies that are carried not by dialogue, but by visual storytelling, which I think is purer. Which requires one hell of a good story, direction and acting. Those are aspects that tend not to feature too prominently in action movies. But yea, theoretically, it's possible. I am Legend is a decent example.
