Numerous fires (marked with red dots) were burning across eastern Africa on June 10, 2003, as shown in this true-color Aqua MODIS image. The fires appear most heavily concentrated east of Lake Tanganyika (left edge), but are also scattered across Zambia (bottom left) and Mozambique (bottom right). The lake in the center of the image is Lake Malawi. The fires are part of the typical agricultural burning activities that occur in the region, where people set fires to clear land and prepare it for planting and ranching. Similar fires are set all over the world in springtime, including Australia, South America, North America, Europe, and Asia. Smoke plumes from some of the fires are visible streaming away with the wind; many of the fires in central and southeastern Tanzania have visible smoke plumes. More smoke plumes are visible in the image's higher resolutions.
