Since the announcement of the new 40GB PS3, sales have increased by 178% last week in the UK.

The Nintendo DS is still in first place, Wii second and PS3 third, followed by the 360.

Well that site exists out of multiple sites, the main site is called gamingonly. It seperates in different sites: ps3only, 360only, wiionly. So this is only the PS3 section of that site.

Trust me, they aren't biased at all.

Thanks for posting, but I'll believe that when I see it on vgchartz.com (granted, that may be very shortly, but I'll not believe that until then.)

Do they indicate how many were 40Gs and how many were 60Gs. Sony is running a sort of scare campaigne now in the PAL regions saying that once the 60Gs systems with BC run out only the 40Gs without BC will be sold.

No they don't, I would like to know that as well. I've heard that the 60GB version is already very hard to get in the Netherlands because of the fact that it won't come back after it's sold out.

I always new that the price was the only thing wrong with the PS3.

I wonder why he would think BC isn't important to us?:

Analyst Believes America Will Get 40GB PS3
Club Skill UK, 16th Oct 2007.
But only once they get rid of the 60GB version.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, analyst Michael Pachter believes Sony America is holding back on announcing the 40GB model so it can sell more of the older 60GB units across the region. Pachter believes that Sony America has an "inventory control problem", and he believes that they don't want to reduce the price of the 60GB version of the PS3 which has received price-cuts in both Japan and Europe.

"These rolling announcements suggest to me that Sony has an inventory control problem, with too many unsold 60GB units out there, and they don't want to have to cut the price to clear them," and continued on to say that Sony will have to "accept reality and bundle [the 60GB with] a game and an extra controller for $499.99 (USD), giving consumers some value for their money."

Commenting on backwards compatibility, Pachter says he doesn't see a problem with it: "I don't think most people who waited this long care enough about backwards compatibility to affect their decision either way."

Sony recently reduced the price of the 60GB version of the PlayStation3 across Europe to £349, and introduced the 40GB version for £299.

We'll bring you any announcements in the future if Sony do plan to drop the 60GB version across America.

in work today we had about 12 wii's in stock and went within an hour. Yet we still have tons of ps3s. only sold 1 all day. Suppose its only 1 shop though. A woman actually bought us chocolates for reserving a wii for her haha.

Oh and we didnt sell any 360s, infact the ps3 we sold was bought from a trade in of a 360 lol

I still don't get that and how they found out beats me (probably expensive research), but they were right in dropping the BC.

I visit Dutch PS3 sites and everyone who still wants a PS3 doesn't give a damn about BC. I on the other hand do.. but than again, I bought the PS3 when it was released, so I don't have to be afraid of that.

But they were right, people don't care that much about BC anymore. Of course there are still a lot of people who do, but most don't. And for the people who do care, they just have to be fast and buy a 60GB model.

The sales figures for VGCharts for the week ending Oct 13th

North America Other(Pal Region) Total
XBox360 123,098 42,244 165,342
PS3 31,394 77,827 109,221

The PS3 did well in the PAL regions but sales spikes generally fall off. The XBox360 is still riding the Halo wave in the US so its figures should also drop off. Then comes the Xmas buying season and that will have a big impact on things to come.

According to the Gamespot article [[here]] (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6181094.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;4) 89% of purchases are of the 60GB. The 60GB does have a better deal over the 40GB though - 2 games, BC and more features on the PS3 so it's no surprise more people are buying the 60GB.

40GB will be available in the US soon as it's turning up on price lists in Sony and Target stores with stock being available from 28th October (no word on if that's when they'll sell the machines though).

So some of it maybe panic buying to get one before they run out. I am still not sure how attractive the 40G model is going to be.

Is it too early to say I told you so?

Yes.

What we're seeing here is a sales spike in response to the price cut. People who were waiting for the PS3 to come down in price (or who were saving up) can now buy one.

Whether the PS3 can maintain this sales increase is another matter entirely.
