View Full Version : PS3 new version
Did you heard about the new PS3 version. It's 399,99€
I was very happy when i saw the price but then i read in the site that this new version doesn't support PS2 and PS1 games
I'm sad !
And if someday my PS2 tell me that can't run PS2 games and then, more than 20 games go to recycle. Even the 60Gb version still exists but someday they will stop putting this version on market and then 40Gb version will be on markets for years.
What version ran PS1 and PS2 games ? Is 60Gb version ?
The 40GB can run PS1 games, but not PS2. The 60 & 80GB run both PS1 & PS2 games, though.
I find that really stupid, we are moving forward in gaming so why shouldnt they let us play it on it. but the price drop is good. But for people (like me) who will have to sell their PS2 and PS1 probobly to get a PS3 it isn't looking good.
I haven´t got any of the PS3 versions yet, but if I first get one, I would want it to be able to play both PS1 and PS2 games. Why on earth doesn´t it?
I´ll keep my PS2, so of course I can play PS2 games, but just seems very unneccesary.
I´ll buy the 60GB version instead.
All that circus with backwards compatibility is a joke if you ask me. My PS2 won't last forever and if they think I'll fall for their 4567th pink paper-thin version of it then they're sadly mistaken.
And so when comes the PS4 they will say: Playstation 4 is not compactible with PS4, PS3 and PS2 game only PS1. lolol, Just kidding.:D

It's all very confusing... all I want is an affordable PS3 that plays PS3 games! Thankfully the price point is coming down. I haven't touched my PS2 since I got the 360, so I can't imagine I'll miss playing games I already don't play!

That is also what I want,I can't wait for the time that I will have enough money :)
I still haven't figured out why they think us Europeans are perfectly fine with crippled backwards compatibility...

im just going to pay $100 bucks more for the 80gb ps3 with the 85% or so backwards compatibility

The biggest mistake both Sony and MS have made this generation is the introduction of all these different SKUs and package deals.
While us gamers understand the packages, the average Joe Bloggs doesn't and is easily confused.
Furthermore, I still resent the fact that the ELITE console was not released at launch.
I'm getting the 60 gig for Christmas. There's a choice of a 60 gig plus 2 games for £350 or a 40 gig with no BC with 2 games for £350. Why would anyone want the 40 gig when you can get the 60 gig with the same amount of games for the same price?

I don't see what the problem is,
if you're bothered about crippled backward compatability (yes Sony, i'm annoyed, i want to play R&C 3 without crappy slowdown) then buy the 60gb version,
if not then buy the 40Gb version,
we have a choice, it's not as if Sony are forcing the 40Gb version upon us
here is another idea, the PS2 is like under 100 bucks in most areas new. just get an PS2 then your problem will be solved. I am getting the 80 gig model this xmas and i have a perfectly good PS2 (slim model) that i still use ;).

I've been wondering about the backwards compatability of the next gen consoles. The 360 uses a software emulator to run original Xbox games and has downloadable updates to allow more old games to work, right? Does the PS3 backwards compatability work in a similar way, or is there a piece of hardware that is in some PS3 models but not others which allows it to run PS1&2 games?

emulation now, no PS1/2 chips are in newer PS3's, firmware updates increase the compatibility list :D

What a suckarse move by Sony. ¬¬
yeah the backwards compatibility on the newer systems is similar to the 360 where you can get downloadable patches for future games.
There are two essential chip sets that a PS3 needs for full BC.
The 60GB version has both and is fully BC, however this is the version that Sony is no longer making and the inventory for this version is not being replaced once it is sold out
The 80GB version retained the graphics synthesizer chip and manages BC thru software emulation
The 40GB version does not have either chip set and therefore cannot play PS2 games period.
It is interesting to note that Sony has stated that removing the graphics synthesizer chip was not a big cost savings in the 40GB but that it was more to force PS3 owners to buy PS3 games and wean them away from PS2 games.

Which is what they should have done all along, IMO. Once again I say, God Of War 2 should have been PS3 exclusive! I'd have bought a PS3 long ago, if so, and I'm not alone I'm sure.

can't blame people for still being attached to their PS2's though..........your point is valid though
i'm just glad i got my machine at launch, so i can play either :D

There are a lot of folks out there with large PS2 libraries and the fact that PS2s breakdown and it is a pain to have to maintain three or four consoles instead of one or two all play into making BC a big factor. For some it is like adding an extra $100 to the cost of a PS3 because you still have to have a PS2.

The 40GB console is a waste of time, no-one is buying it surely?
I bought a 60GB pack just a few weeks back, best thing I've done - it plays Blu-Ray games, films and most of those old PS2 games and even plays the blocky PS1 classics :)
I think anyone who wants a PS3 and is living in the UK should try to get their mits on the 60GB pack before it disappears completely - the two games and two Blu-Ray movies for just an extra £50 is an absolute steal in my opinion - a must buy fo any PS3 fans :jmp:
I think the recent sales boom could be down to parents buying the console for their kids before Xmas and then stashing it away until Santa pops down the chimney - then on Xmas morning the kids have a fully working PS3 to toy around with, it's a good idea. Although I can see many parents just buying the 40GB only for their kid to scream "MY PS2 games don't work!!" :tea:
Anyhow this new version is just to get more folk into the PS3 - they aren't really going like hot cakes though - guy in my local Gamestation says they are still stuck with most of their original batch... :whi:... in other words no-one wants 'em!!

If that's true, then Sony can go **** off  If it really doesn't cost them that much to add BC chips to the PS3's, then they're just trying to force people to have to keep buying PS2's in order to play their old games. Sometimes I think Sony is deliberately trying to shoot themselves in the foot

Exactly. Although a new PS2 is $130 last I checked, so it's even worse than you said.

before you believe the "spin" BS, the 40GB version is for folks who don't care about backwards compatibility for PS2 games...it still plays PS1 games though, plus this model is for those who don't have deep pockets
yet again there's good deals around on the 60GB, which is the better model for back compatibility :D

Two questions-- Is the 40 GB model clearly labeled that it doesn't play PS2 games? Is it true that the nearly fully BC 60 GB version is no longer being made?
Edit: A third question :p
I really don't see why I'd need 60 GB on a console--20 GB should be more than enough, so why do I have to pay extra for the larger harddrive just to get the BC?

Q1: i'm not sure, i haven't seen the packaging
Q2: yes the 60GB will be phased out eventually
Q3: fortunately, with ANY PS3 you can upgrade the hard drive to whatever size you want :D
should you choose to get one, get the one that's best for you and your needs :D

My point was that I don't want a big harddrive. I would want the smallest harddrive possible, but I can't get that without giving up the BC. Why would I want to pay an extra $100 for an 80 GB machine when I'd be happy with 20 GB as long as it was BC? (The 60 GB machine doesn't seem to be in stock where I am)
Edit: I'm not really interested in getting a PS3 since all of the next-gen games I'm interested in are multi-platform. I just got a PS2 recently and I keep reading about how unreliable they are, so I was planning to get a PS3 as a replacement if the PS2 breaks after its warranty is up (which would be over a year from now). But now it looks like I won't be able to do that since the PS3's won't be BC by that time. I don't know how long PS2's will be available, either, so I'll be extremely angry if my PS2 breaks and I am left with no way to play my PS2 games.
Edit 2: Also, according to this website http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus several of the games I have would work fine with the 60 GB compatability but they suffer sound stuttering, slow-downs, and graphical corruption for the 80 GB model :( So even if I did pay the extra $100 for the 80 GB, I still wouldn't be able to play the games perfectly.
I'm buying the 40GB PS3.
I'm not sellin my PS2 so if I wanted to play my PS2 games I just simply unpack the thing. Why not ?

Exactly my thoughts! :tmb:
And why should the PS2 get broken? Mine is 4 years old and it still works perfectly (and I must admit I´d played for over 15 consecutive hours with games like FFX, Anniversary or Shadow Hearts...if that amount of playtime didn´t do anything to my PS2, nothing will) :p

A While ago I tried out my PS1 and its still working as if I'd just bought the thing.
Ok yeh I will be a bit annoyed but by the time it breaks I will have enough a huge PS3 collection to play with. :p

Thank you for that :) I got my first PS2 recently and it's a silver slimline one, so now I feel a little better (I was terrified it would break on me because one of my friend's big PS2's broke for no apparent reason and then I started reading all the horror stories online when I tried to see if there was a way to fix it).
I wondered why PS3 seemed so cheap is ASDA. Now I know. The £60 is £350 on play.com so it's gone down in price a little bit. Think I'd rather spend the extra £50 for the extra features.

Well, at least the 360 has the courtesy to break while it's still under warranty :p (Seriously, though, I believe that the new 360's don't have this problem and the old ones have a life-time warranty if they break with the red ring of death. I don't know how good Microsoft's replacement or repair policy is, though.)

Well, that´s a relief :p And a very optimistic way of considering it...yet, I´m not quite encouraged to buy an XBOX360 (because affording a PS3 is absolutely outrageous I´m "obliged" to look for similar consoles) if I am to change it so many times. I´m very used to having consoles of great quality, my PSX is 9 years old and my PS2 is 4 and I´m quite proud since they never had any technical issue and work almost perfectly (the PSX has its issues, but it mostly works fine).
I really want the PS3 to get cheaper. I like Sony´s products, mainly because they have the biggest variety in the market (in games terms) and, to me, Sony means Quality. Still, anyone, feel free to prove me wrong :D
