Maybe they are concentrating on larger storage capacities. What's wrong with that?

If that's the case i think they will make a 80GB one, :wve: (Which i hope is backwardscompatible with all PS1/PS2 games.)

People were complaining about the price of the console, so Sony has released a "starter pack" with a 40GB HD without backwards compatibility, all for a lower price (£300). I think it's a great idea, to be honest.

yeha but the thing is that i really want a bacwards compatability one, cos i love to play all my old games so a 40 GB one for me would be a waste of money. so if they stop making the 60 GB and only to the 40 GB then i wont be able to play my old games!!!!! unless they bring out the 80 but thats gonna cost wayyyyy to much for me. so does no one know if this is true for sure?

i don't think that they are "kiling" the production of PS3(60gb)... aparently those are only rumours...

The 60GB version is still available, so I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you get it soon, because the Christmas rush will definitely make sure there won't be any in stock.

As far as I know, production has been ceased on the 60gig console, so whatever is left on the market......thats it!! There is an 80gig console available that includes all the features of the 60gig with added memory.

So If you can't lay your hands on a 60 before they sell out.....you always have the option of an 80.

The 80gb is available here in America as well as the 40gb that's not backwords compatible, doesn't have SACD playback, no flash card readers, and only two usb ports instead of four. I don't know how important that is for you, but apparently it's a big deal for some of my friends. *I can't afford one till it drops to $50, so I don't care really*

The 20gb and 60gb is a rip off anyways, they're the same price as the 80gb. As that's still a pretty high price, with an 80gb hardrive it's a little more worth it. I just feel sorry for the idiots who waited in line for the release to get the 20gb hardrive. Especially the ones who fought and shot people over it here in America. X.x The prices would have dropped a lot faster and Sony would have given in faster to good old demand to sell the product, if no one stood in line.

Right now the 80GB is BC through software emulation. What that means is the some PS2 games will work and some will not. It is the same way that the 360 handles BC with Xbox games.

To the best of my knowledge the 80GB is not currently available in the PAL regions.

Software emulation leaves much to be desired, on the 360 and, I'm sure, on the PS3 as well. I was lucky to get one of the 60 gig PS3's at the lower price so I can play all my PS2 games. I don't have many left--and it wouldn't have been a deal-breaker for me--but it's nice to have that hardware emulation.

Such a shame that the 60gb models of PS3 are running out. BC would have been nice. I'll just have to stick to playing my old games on PS2 and hope it'll never break since it's worked fine for all 6 years I've had it. Can't yet afford a PS3, so I'll lose the option of having the 60gb model. I myself possibly won't get a Wii ever, no games of my interest.

nothing, but i couldn't buy one if i wanted too (seriously, i hate this stupid console, but what every) My brother likes to save alot, so i guess that might be a good thing to keep him glued to the tv 24/7

fyi if you want to have more HD space on the 60gig with the BC the hd that is used in the PS3 is a 5400 rpm SATA laptop sized HD. i saw many easy step by step sites that show a guy going from a 40 gig to a 120 gig on a PS3 the only thing you loose is the game saves, all the settings and firmware etc are stored in the memory.

how to swap the HD from a smaller to a larger size in a PS3 with visual aids (http://www.gamersreports.com/article/43/)

Doesn't replacing the inner HDD void the warranty? That's what I've been told. I'd rather use outer usb connectable HDD's anyway...

Didn't they already kill off the 80gb in the US?

The 40gb costs $400 USD, 60gb is about $500 if I'm not mistaken. Still, 360 FTW :jmp:

they did not kill the 80 gig model the current ones on the market are the 400 for 399 and the 80 for 499. the 60 gig model is the one that is discontinued and once gone, that is gone. and yes swapping out the HD will void the warranty, that is why i plan on getting a older model before doing that ;).

I found this website which tells if a game is backwards compatible on the 60 gb or 80 gb PS3 (no PS2 games are compatible with the 40 gb). Just type in the game's name and select which PS3 you want and it'll tell you if the PS1/PS2 game will work, and what problems there are (if any). The 80 gb model has more problems than the 60 gb model (at least for the PS2 games I checked).

I was speaking about this issue with my local video game store owner, who suggested I could continue to play my PS1, and PS2 games on my PS2. PS2s are still selling and dirt cheap at $99 currently. Seemed like a plan to me.

Right now that is probably the best plan, if you have the extra $100. Down the road, when Sony finally stops making the PS2, it might become an issue. Sony always made BC a big part of their development plans. Now they seem to be abandoning BC. I suspect that Sony is in a real re-thinking pattern for the PS4 and I wonder where BC will fit in?
