The Balkans Peninsula is the southeastern-most peninsula of Europe, and is made up of portions of Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, and Romania. The peninsula is bounded by six seas: the Black (upper right corner), the Sea of Marmara (upper right edge), the Aegean (center), the Mediterranean (bottom left), the Ionian (left edge), and the Adriatic (upper left corner). The peninsula is named for the range of mountains that runs from eastern Serbia through central Bulgaria to the Black Sea.
This region is historically significant: three major civilizations flourished in this region, including Ancient Greece (c. 4000 BC through 146 BC), the Byzantine Empire (395 BC through the 13th century AD), and the Ottoman Empire (13th century AD through 1918). The political entities existent today on the peninsula are called the Balkan States, and are successors to the Ottoman Empire. Athens, the Greek capital, is visible as a gray spot on the southern end of the peninsula in eastern central Greece. The spot on which the city stands has been inhabited since the Bronze Age.
Scattered throughout the Balkan States are a number of fires, all of which are marked in bright red.
