Nvidia is offloading older graphics chips at double-digit discounts in a bid to clear its inventory figures before the end of its current fiscal quarter.

Some $80m worth of stock is on offer, at discounts of 10-20 per cent, sources close to Taiwan's graphics card makers cited (http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article.asp?datePublish=2004/04/16&pages=A1&seq=1) by DigiTimes claim.

Nvidia has said only that supply and demand for its chips are normal. Its Q1 2005 ends on 30 April.

Lowering GPU prices may offset higher DRAM costs, some of the sources said, but others noted that increased DRAM demand - as card makers buy more memory to fit out all the extra boards they'll be producing - may inflate DRAM prices further. Or they may simply sit on any extra GPUs they've bought, using them over time to meet existing demand patterns.
