I bought the Dirty Harry film Sudden Impact the other day, but the scenes 3 and 4 won't work. The player goes black and says "cannot read disc". Is there a good way to clean DVD's that might remedy this? Of course, it might turn out that I should just return it to the store.

Spit on it and rub it vigorously on your shirt sleeve. usually works for me. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif

Ok. If you don't have the special wipes you can try some tepid water and a soft cloth..

Well I had a Dvd that did that too and I have a DVD cleaning kit, that I use and if I am too lazy to get up and do that I just Fast Forward the movie through the parts that are skipping, but don't go to because it might work after you go by a little bit.
;)
Hope this helps and tell me if it does.

Could just be something wrong with the disc. If it's not dirty or visably scratched - take it back to the store and get a new one.
