View Full Version : Improved climbing
I realize Tomb raider has always had a definitive style in her climbing mechanics. It was always relatively clear as to how far she could jump, how straight a wall was for her to climb, where the huge gaps where, and so on.
I was recently playing Assassin's Creed when the thought hit me, this type of climbing belongs in tomb raider! Assassin's Creed modeled their 'high profile' running animations after the famous Free Running visuals. Lara Croft after all is a Tomb Raider and should be quick on her feet, able to scale tall moutain side walls with what ever little bit of rock is sticking out wide enough for her to get a full grasp on. Assassin's Creed had the '2 inch rule,' Tomb Raider should maybe try something like that. The game already looks way to far in progress to remap levels like this but I just felt that the animation in TR for her climbing should in some ways mimic those in Assassin's Creed. She should use both hands to hold onto small holes or edges, use her feet at different lengths, not just always the same width or height distance apart. That's just my opinion and vision...
In one screenshot, it looks like she's doing exactly that :tmb:

In one of the screenshots for TRU, Lara appears to be climbing on a wall which has carvings sticking out of it :D

You just described Tomb Raider Heaven for me :D
Agreed 120% :tmb:

Well her climbing mechanics never really changed after all this time (except for the scaling between corners change which felt a bit minor and necessary when it happened) At this point the whole thing feels a bit dated and I'd like to see some 'improvised' climbing mechanics, where her scaling a wall actually looks natural, not so perfectly mapped.
The PLAY article mentioned that the climbing system if more advanced in TRU. At this point, we have no idea what they did to the system, so we'll have to wait till more details are announced.

This in fact is my favourite screen shot so far.

Not sure if allowed but thank you!
That's the kind of climbing this game needs. Hopefully not all the walls seem like they're too repetative, AC did a great job in making everything climbable seem natural. The wall seems a bit to simple, but I can't wait to see more! Already shaping up to be better gameplay!

That does look rather promising, although I'd like it to be a bit less obvious as to where we can climb. Isn't it odd that the infamous AOD has a climbing system most of us like better than the one in TRL/A? Excluding the grip meter, of course.

I'd agree with you there. I liked how it was climbing natural looking enviroments in AOD, hopefully the system will be a bit more subtle as mentioned in TRU.

Well I agree 125%.

How do you all feel about Lara have the ability to free run, to a generous degree. Maybe not as insane as Assassin's Creed, but I could totally see lara jumping across scattered high beams in an old tomb, all hanging above an infinite abyss then from one huge gap you jump and grab onto a beam sticking out from above and swing across. Sound's like tomb goodness to me.

This is what I had in mind (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=2107941&postcount=1792), how TR should be from TRU onwards.

YES! I'd love it! Can you imagine free-running at high-speeds through a collapsing tomb?!:D WITH THE PROPER SOUNDTRACK??!!!:jmp:

I was actually thinking that Altair couldn't do as much as Lara should be able to do :p Leap of Faith aside, everything that Altair did would be perfectly reasonable for Lara to do, and then some.
So not only are we boasting about an incredible game AC, seriously it's incredible, but realizing that it's not bad to borrow some ideas from another game. Tomb Raider should up the adrenaline by making everything more fluid, mixed pathed and less linear as RAID posted.
Free running and Lara only seem natural considering she had an assault course at home to test agility and speed. Why not throw that into the tomb levels with an intense escape scene, the entire tomb collapsing behind you as you dash for freedom from a small source of light you could barely make out ahead, run until there is nothing but white as you dash and hop and climb your way to the top through various mixed obstacles, ledges, holes. Oh man TRU could be so exciting if they get the adventuring/platform mechanics right.

Lol, sorry, I was merely giving my visual idea.

Exactly! I just thought of Tomb Raider the entire time...
except imagine running across gaps, sprinting along high beams shooting at an enemy with one hand and grabing on to a ledge, and swinging around a corner with the other. It could be so epic!

That reminds me of that pre-Legend concept art where Lara's sprinting across a foot-wide beam-thing with her pistols out. I think she's shooting at a helicopter. Hmm.......
I mean CD is doing a great job, they finally added shooting while climbing, now just using one gun at a time could add for some serious gameplay elements, exciting sprinting tactics and one handed enviromental mechanics

we need sprinting before we can use sprinting tactics.
EDIT: I just had an idea. What if we had "speed climbing"? It'd be like, Lara could climb really fast but it'd be easier to fall or slip or something.
I hope they bring that back, I always loved the way she would just hunch over and bring her body close together while flying like a mad woman across a thin pathway to make it before the door closed and crushed her somewhat not so proportional body.

I believed they added this with Legend and Anniversary but it felt like the standard climbing. I like the idea though, they should make a very speedy climbing mechanic for escape sequences with a higher chance of missing a ledge or something.

Woah, I can't believe what I just saw - Assassin's creed's demo, that wall climbing and well everything else is just bloody amazing! I've never seen anything like it, I'm not much of a gamer except for TR, so that's new to me, I'd love to see something that wicked in TR!! :jmp:

In just these 2 days and of what we have seen so far, everything looks very promising.
But i do beleive that many of us have also leant alot that the final judgement comes after we play the game ourselves.
However i am very hopeful this time.
The climbing seems to be back as in aod.
This is awsome.

It might really be like that and improved, it has been said that the game will have a lot of memory, so I hope she'll climb like that.
No more blocks! :hea:
That screenshot made me think about Assassin's Creed as well. :)
That'd be a really cool feature, though. :D
