^Making your Mind Up has been announced for March the 1st and we've got a new guy in charge of which songs are picked for the show (thank God!).
As for bothering this year, you could say we've not bothered since 2002. :p

Getting down to business this is by far my most favourite song yet.
k0w-LvCdkQA

Its from Malta, the songs called Vodka and the Singer's name is Morena.
However it hasn't been confirmed yet whether this is their chosen song but I have a feeling its in with a good chance of winning. And its a fun song too unlike Molitva from year however, its still got decent vocals. A nice eurovisionish balance. :D

I mentioned Lithuania because I'm from there :pi:

No offence anyone, but Eurovision Song Contest in the 21st century has very little to do with music.. It's about who can deliver the best show on the scene or what's the more 'party' like music... There's so much techno in many of the entries (and techno is hardly music by my book) and I can't remember when I last heard a decent song win..

A few of the classics among Danish songs are actually Eurovision entries from several decades ago, and that was music! They didn't give a crap about lightning or techno beats or wearing ridiculous outfits (no offence, Finnish members) - sure there was dancing and stuff, but you could tell that nearly all of the energy was placed in making the song, not coordinating how six artists jumps through hoops of fire..

Feel free to disagree with me, I actually hope there are many of you who can still enjoy this major show these days.. unfortunately I can't see past the shallow scenery that has replaced song quality...

This is the 4 people going to the national final in Lithuania:

Sasha Son- Miss kiss
Raimonda Masiulytė-Birdie tweet
Funny Beat- Evertown
Ingrida Žiliūtė- You

To be honest, Raimonda, Funny Beat and Ingrida would probably do very poorly in the contest, though I can see Sasha Son perhaps making it into 10-20th place so at best, he'll get into the top 10, at worst you'd just about avoid a nul points entry if you picked him.

sorry if that sounds harsh. :/

I agree but I've grown to love both what Eurovision WAS and what it is NOW.
I'd say that 1998 was the last year it was as you described. There were a lot of good songs that year, the orchestra were making their final appearance and you can see how it feels very different to the years that followed.

You can view the 1998 contest here (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CC6F459AAC5F57AA) btw.
So I'm guessing this is more your idea of what it should be now?
TZN9aoznEpg

I think Italy happens to agree with you too btw.
However I must point out there are still exceptions. For example, the Blues song from Magda (Hungary) and Angel from Chiara (Malta) in 2005. They both had class IMO.

Lithuanians were never good in ESC IMO...except those idiots who sing "we are the winners" they made me go ROTFL

and isnt it Roma Maciulytė?

Aww I'd like to see Lithuania send in a nice song though. I'm sure you guys have a good amount of talent there to represent you guys. :)
As for "we are the winners", I remember wogan (our commentator) having a field day about that song - Called it a football chant haha. 'Twas funny though.

As for the spelling, you'd best point the finger of blame at ESC Today. I found the names there. :)

^Agreed. (And Leona I think will probably continue on to become one of the "greats" perhaps...I can see it happening).

I think Eurovision should try an X Factor approach. Try selecting a bunch of unknowns that have nothing to lose but perhaps a lot of originality. :)

Malta will be making their decision tonight about who they feel will give them the best chance of winning Eurovision in Belgrade this year and there's some hot competition going on. With favourites being Claudia Faniello's ballad, Caravaggio and Morena who sings the up-tempo Vodka.

To check out previews of each song you can
watch this video and make your mind up:

Only 4 singers can proceed to the nation final of the competition let's hope Morena is one of them. :D

I don't have a very good opinion on Eurovision.Besides not being interested in that kind of music (but this is purely subjective) I think it reflects political interests for the most part.Or at least enough to be suspicious.

I have no idea if we've even chosen the singer/band/ w/e freaks for the competition. I've somehow lost the will to watch it anymore. Last year was so freaking dull. Way to go us...

Anyway. Might have to watch it just for the laugh again.

I actually quite liked Finland's entry from last year...it was cliched but was still among the better entries from 2007.

However, the actual hosting of the contest was bit 'meh' if I'm honest with you. The stage felt confined and almost seizure inducing with it being one giant screen but that's not the worst thing. The worst thing was that girl dressed up in pink who was out in the green room with the singers...what was that all about? The santa thing was a bit random too. The voting was quite dull as well. Serbia just pulled out ahead and that was it. :/
Still, it was a good contest and I've seen worse (Israel 1999/Estonia 2002 :yik:)

Semi final draw details revealed

Moments ago, eurovision.tv announced further details about Monday's draw to determine which semi final the 38 countries will participate in. The draw will take place with a live broadcast of procedures on the official Eurovision Song Contest website on Monday 28th January at 13:00 CET. Željko Joksimovic, who finished second at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest with Lane Moje and composed Hari Mati Hari's 2006 Eurovision Song Contest entry Lejla for Bosnia & Herzegovina, will perform during the draw show.
The 38 countries represented in the two Eurovision Song Contest semi finals have been entered into six pots, based on geographic location and mathematical voting patterns since 2004. From each pot, the countries will be divided between the two semi finals.
From the two pots with seven countries, three from one pot will be joined by four countries from the other and vice versa. Both semi finals will therefore have 19 competing countries, who will battle for ten places in the final.
The top nine countries from each semi final by way of the traditional voting pattern will qualify. They will be joined by the highest placed country as voted for by the back-up juries that did not finish in the top nine from the televote result.
At the beginning of the draw, two envelopes with 'Semi-Final 1' and 'Semi-Final 2' will be drawn. The country left in Pot 5 takes part in the Semi-Final that is written in the first envelope. The country left in Pot 6 takes part in the Semi-Final that is written in the second envelope.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b25/tsimy3/draw.jpg

The five remaining countries pre-qualified for the final: Serbia, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom will be divided between the shows, using envelopes. Three will broadcast one semi final and have voting rights, the other two will broadcast the other semi final with voting rights.
All countries have the option to broadcast both shows, but will only be able to vote in the semi final that they are drawn to in Monday's ceremony.

--------
Quite complicated isn't it?

Take note of the new countries joining: Azerbaijan and San Marino (woohoo for Italian singers! :D). :tmb:

Well Santa lives in Korvatunturi here in Lapland. So it wasn't that random as they showed some of the culture here. But God! Who the hell was the director of those miniclips! They were horrid! >_< The director did say that he has never even watched Eurovisions nor the miniclips that describe that country. Why the **** did they choose him to direct and plan them?

And the pink dressed girl is one of our comedians. She's a crazy barbie *****. :p

Reggie
24-01-08, 20:05
Ahh I see. There were just a few things that left me feeling American - y'know a bit like how British humour just doesn't work with America? I guess the commedian barbie person was that. As for santa, it was nice but unusual but like I say, it appeared a bit random initially then I was like "ah but he's from lapland...it figures".

I think my favourite ever years hosting wise were from the UK in '98 and Greece in 2006 (The intro left me totally awed).

There's always those momenst when some countries/regions don't understand some jokes or stuff.

I agree. Greece was bloody fantastic! *goes to youtube stuff to remember* :D

I've never really liked the voting system. The votes are so ****ing.. I dunno what to say. Just wrong. Neighbouring countries voting for each others or so on. The votings are so political. I think Finland got so many votes only because it was flashy and something really new back in 06.

Reggie
24-01-08, 20:21
^You should post some of the youtube stuff here. :tmb:

The voting system is very...ish isn't it? though it can prove exciting sometimes hopefully things will be better this year. I'm glad Finland won in 2006 though. It really wasn't such a good year for quality of songs so naturally the stellar performance won out.

I'm a bit afraid of what we're going to enter ;last year's was so embarassing!

I've nothing against a good show: after all, what was Finland's song if not a parody to Heavy Metal? The lyrics were completely pop and, truth to be told,so were their outfits. Greece was also very entertaining, full of rhythm. I confess I'm loosing the patience for songs like the ones from Sweden, who force too much the emotional tone, etc.

But...I voted for Molitva! I think it was a true ballad, very powerful and, yet, austere, without being too look,I'm so dramatic.

Scooch had the fun factor but that was it. We need someone who's fun, vocally talented and has a good beat going in their song. NOT something outdated and unrepresentative of our country like Scooch was. IMO the political voting had barely anything to do with it, we were straight up dire last year. (again IMO)

*ahem*

Makes a change for the person I root for to win. Malta had an all round strong selection to choose from and I think Caravaggio definitely deserved its second placing (and I would've been content if it came first).

Best of luck to you guys.

I have small hopes with this song. I really don't like it. Caravaggio was my favourite. At least second place is not bad.

I think Vertigo was our best entry so far.
Olh0PV5zURA

We didn't make it though the semi-final with Vertigo, so I don't think Vodka will do any better.

EDIT: Have you seen Olivia on tonight's show? She looks great with her new hair style.

Reggie

I really liked Vertigo. It was in my top 5 last year :)
No I didn't see Olivia this evening but its nice to know she made an appearance it shows she's gracious about what happened last year then which is cool.

Ok, I'm still in the process of watching through this years songs already confirmed (after which I will update the first post) and I must point out that there's been an ok lineup from what I've seen so far - stronger than previous years however I have to share with you what must be one of the worst Eurovision songs ever:

ReL2uXL2qA0

This is the debut entry for Azerbaijan. :yik:

Edit: Right, I take back what I said before. Tonight has seen some truly awful songs pass through and I'm quite worried about the standards of the show. Let's hope we see an improvement. :(

VonCroy360

^ :yik: What's up with the winged white guy and his high notes?:vlol:

Anyway, I've listened to some of this year's songs, and I hate all of them, which should at least make it fun to watch. :vlol:
I liked this Polish entry though, even though it's not selected yet:

PW3kPFK9v2c

:)

Reggie
02-02-08, 22:20
^Well I would like to think there's a distinction between what's fun and what's flat out bad. Take Verka and Scooch as an example. One tries to be fun and fails miserably the other simply is fun and I was having a right laugh on the night.

Meh...

VonCroy360
02-02-08, 22:33
Yup, there are intentionally fun songs, which are fun to watch and there are those really bad songs that take themselves way too seriously and it's fun to laugh at them. :vlol:
That imo is the charm of a contest like this. No one expects a master-piece song (not anymore, at least). It's all for fun. :)

Reggie
02-02-08, 22:40
I guess so. I'm sure Terry Wogan will as usual put that across very nicely (he's certainly had oppurtunity to develop that skill!).

Btw I loved Croatia's entry in '98 that was IMO a pretty great song! :tmb:

TZN9aoznEpg

Could you tell me what she's singing about?

VonCroy360
02-02-08, 22:52
Another day has gone by
Another moon has risen
Silently, as a nice guest
To be my bridge till the morning

Cause sadness leads me
Through the years
And steals my dreams
Until another day comes

Don't let the sun come up
Don't let me be here
Don't let me be here
Don't let them wake me up
Don't let them wake me up without you

And then she repeats it most of the time.

She also recorded the english version of the song, although the lyrics are a bit different:

4RU1Sz3a66M

:)

Reggie
02-02-08, 23:00
Thanks a lot! :tmb:
The English version is good but the original version kind of flows better in some parts and the orchestra makes it have even more impact.

VonCroy360
02-02-08, 23:07
Yup, the original always sounds better. It does suck that our national selection doesn't allow the artists to submit the songs in english. Then they can either compete with a weaker version of the song, or enter the original one that no one understands.

Danijela's song was 'Da Bomb'. I have to admit it's one of my favourite songs, right after Zeljko Joksimovic - Lane Moje: (Eurovision) Serbia 2004.

Reggie
08-02-08, 22:01
That's cool, Its nice to see appreciators of Danijela's song because it was so underrated on the night IMO and S&M's song in 2004 was a particularly noteworthy one that remains in my memory. Am listening to it now that you've mentioned it! :)

Anubis_AF
08-02-08, 22:34
Oh absolutely. I loved Croatia's entry that year. And it was placed high, I think 5th?
Lane Moje should have won, don't you think? :D

Bosnia and Herzegovina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhIe11qyvhI)

BTW, it links to Slovenia's entry.

Reggie
08-02-08, 22:53
I guess 5th is quite high but I'll never understand how the UK placed 2nd that year, what a forgettable song that was. I think it could have easily been a Croatia win any other year so the 5th was really a product of there being so many other stong performances that night ('98 was known as the battle of the divas I believe haha).

As for Lane Moje winning...well I'm not too sure. Ruslana's very appealing and for its time, this was a big show that she put on and it was the show/performance that won out over the song, unfortunately it started a bit of a trend for a while (until Marija defeated Verka :p) so the whole 'ooo she's attractive and has a good performance' appeal wore off after a while.
So I'm not too sure.

Thanks for that, I've corrected the link. :)

Sadly, they're not. :vlol:

It appears that this song is not eligible for ESC after all. Germany seems to have two similar competitions, and while one is the Eurovision selection, the other one (the one this song is on) appears to be just a selection between german states. My bad. :o

Reggie
09-02-08, 17:17
Ohh I see. Well tbh, I wasn't referring to the song you posted but to the myspace open selection held by Spain (which has turned out some pretty good options for them) and the UK are apparantly planning to scrap 'Making Your Mind Up' and replacing it with 'How do you solve a problem like Eurovision?' hosted by Graham Norton where there will be songs written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and there will be some of the previous Marias and Josephs there competing for a place in Belgrade. Something like that. It sounds pretty good. :)

The guy is hot but I hate the lyrics.
And this is why:

'All night long' (Lionel Richie?)
'Celebrate good times come on' (Kool and the Gang?)
'put on your blue suede shoes' (Walking in Memphis - Cher/Marc Cohn?)

To be clear I'm not bandying around the term plagiarism here but it all comes across as very unoriginal/cliched in terms of lyrics. I guess Hanna from Finland has the same problem last year: Hot and has a decent voice but is totally let down by the lyrics. :(

I like the lyrics, the ballad feel the first verse has to it, and, offcourse, the fact that the Swiss are finally realising they speak three of the most beautiful languages in the world and that they don't need to rely on English.

More Selections
Moldova and Hungary have recently made their selections so be sure to check out the updated first post to check the new songs out (personally, I think they're a notch above the most recent batch of selections bar Malta and Switzerland).

UK National Final Update
In other news, the UK national selection has undergone a name change. It will now be called 'Eurovision, Your Decision' however the changes are said to run deeper with vaerious rumours of a format change and Claudia Winkleman being co-host to Terry Wogan this year. Following 5 difficult years under the title 'Making Your Mind Up' its hardly surprising that the BBC wants to wipe the slate clean and put out a fresh image for the national selection.

To read more go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision:_Your_Decision#Category_1_-_TBA).
At a later stage, that page will be updated so do keep your eyes peeled.

For that reason I like so many Japanese and Spanish/Latin songs. I don't know half the words they are singing, but it just sounds beautifull and mysterious. Finnish songs are just so.. ^ It's actually not that bad :) I like it the best at the end..

As I recall it I was a bit pessimistic when I first posted in this thread (I'll have to go back and check, but I'm pretty sure I wrote something along the lines of 'Eurovision has died!!' :p) and if that was the case I wasn't far from the target.. In other words, of course Denmark participates with a boring and soulless song - although I was somewhat happy the evening it was decided: the close second band was some hip hop boy band and it was utter rubbish! My 9 year old cousin sat there, cheering for them - well, that kinda proves my point, doesn't it? ;)

I'm hoping for some merry surprises from the other countries though, something like Serbia's entry.. I'll have to check out the other videos that are linked to the first post..

Oh, and I have to say that among the 10 Danish finalists there were 2 very nice songs, interesting and with a singer who actually put some soul into it - heck, they even had more than 3 chords! But I never fail to predict the voting and of course my favourite was 3rd from last or something like that...

Eurovision dream for reality stars
http://ukpress.google.com/media/ALeqM5hr-twCT28Yl94c91XM9F8v91Lh8g?size=s
X Factor star Andy Abraham
is among the Eurovision hopefuls

Two runners-up from the BBC's Joseph and Maria talent searches are competing for Eurovision glory.
Rob McVeigh and Simona Armstrong are bidding to represent the UK at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade, Serbia, along with former EastEnder Michelle Gayle and X Factor's Andy Abraham.
McVeigh was a finalist in TV show Any Dream Will Do and earned the nickname "Rob the Builder" thanks to his former job as a construction worker. Armstrong was one of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's final 10 in How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
A total of six acts will take part in the Eurovision - Your Decision programme next month on BBC1 and the winner will become the UK's official entry at the Song Contest in May.
The soloists are Michelle Gayle, who appeared as Hattie Tavernier in EastEnders and went on to enjoy a top 10 chart career in the 90s and Andy Abraham, who lost out to Shayne Ward in the 2005 X Factor final.
Two girl groups will also battle it out.
Pop duo LoveShy consists of Aimee Kearsley and Emma Beard, formerly of Clea, a girl band made up of Popstars: The Rivals rejects. Motown-inspired girl group The Revelations are the only entrants who do not owe their existence to a TV show.
The eventual winners will hope to do better than last year's contenders, Scooch, who finished a disastrous 22nd out of 24 with their song Flying The Flag.
The UK is taking the competition more seriously than Ireland, which has put forward a children's puppet called Dustin the Turkey as a possible entrant.
The BBC's Eurovision host Terry Wogan said: "A turkey is one of the contenders for this year's Irish entry. For the past few years, we've been picking a turkey for the UK. Let's hope that the British public will make the right decision this year and give the UK's entry a fighting chance against the Eastern Bloc in Belgrade in May."

Source: The Press Association
Sounds like the BBC are finally getting their act together. I'm rooting for Andy at the moment, I thought he deserved to win the X Factor on the merit of his strong singing talents though I can see why Shayne won - he's more commericially friendly. Anyway, good stuff. :tmb:

Ireland's result have come in and Dustin IS the winner but it was incredibly uncomfortable watching the audience's and the judges reaction. Dana who won in 1970 has now said Ireland should PULL OUT of the contest if they have to stoop that low and the audience were mostly booing during the performance. Astounded faces and shock were the theme.

Thanks for posting! I'll update the first post with this one. To be honest I don't really get it though because of the language barrier. Could you say what its about?

Romance

Because that life
Erases our traces
In a good night
Release some strange demons
So in every dream
Shines a cold sun
And almost all memories
Have stopped shining

If you'd ask me
I'd only knew one thing
That all the colours
Only exist within this rhyme
And both night and day
Are in some lyrics
And they'll disappear
When our songs fade away

Play that romance tonight
Silently and gently
The sadness of a nightingale dying
When the soul separates from the body

Play that romance tonight
But slowly, so everyone can hear it
Let the guitars play again
I haven't listened to them for a long time

now
All the dreams of your songs
All the fantasies
And the faces that dissapeared
They're like shadows
Still a part of my wake ups
Trapped
And weaved inside me a long time ago

Play that romance tonight
Silently and gently
The sadness of a nightingale dying
When the soul separates from the body

Play that romance tonight
But slowly, so everyone can hear it
Let the guitars play again
I haven't listened to them for a long time

And then the old guy is basically saying how everyone is telling him he's old when he's really not. :vlol:

What happened to Maja Suput's song?
It was 5th, I think.

TBH, our entry is terrible. Antonija Šola's song was much better - a perfect choice for Belgrade, and it came 2nd (she REALLY had a chance). But this year's competition was a disaster if you ask me.

Yup, it really was a disaster, but this song is imo much better than Šola going on and on about her homeland, her old mother and pain in her heart in a cheesy manner with those awful players.
But yeah, as I already said, I think this song was one of the best in the whole night and I don't like it at all.

They're some really nice lyrics actually.
As for the quality this year I think I've an explanation for it.

Ok, so there's this east vs. west perception at the moment with the east dominating big time. Well the east think they're safe so less effort is going into their selection processes and so most of the boring songs have come from there. The west on the other hand have been trying too hard and its all backfiring. Spain's myspace selection has descended into a total farce with joke acts running the show, Ireland has entered a Turkey mocking the contest for the sorry state its now in and our own selection process has played it safe this year by not allowing either powerful singers or gimmicky singers to enter. Cyndi would have done us proud I still maintain that.

However, there are still some little gems but you should all be prepared to say goodbye to the overall strength and variety from last year and hello to something altogether more gimmicky and mediocre save for some exceptions (Switzerland, Malta and Hungary).

Definitely. I wonder...could be my favourite 2 countries Ireland and Malta will do really well? hope so.

Moving on, I really need some advice. A few days ago I received this email regarding my ticket application:

Hello there

You recently applied for tickets to see 'Eurovision: Your Decision' on Saturday 1st March.

Unfortunately you have not been successful in obtaining regular tickets for this date. Although it has taken us some time to issue the tickets, as we have had to await confirmation of the studio capacity before issuing the tickets, tickets for this event were allocated very quickly, as it is a very popular event and a great many people applied to join us.

However, we are issuing a small number of standby tickets for this event, so that - if ticket-holders do not use all of their tickets on the day - those with standby tickets will be admitted to the studio. We shall not now be issuing further regular tickets for this event.

We hope to be able to accommodate at least some standby ticket-holders who come to the venue, but standby tickets will not guarantee entry so please do not apply if you need to have guaranteed entry tickets to make your journey worthwhile.

The regular ticket holders are given a call time by which to arrive and after this time any spare places are released to standby ticket holders. However you will be able to check in before the doors opening time and be given a numbered wristband. These are issued to standby ticket holders in the order in which they arrive so that if places are released, we can be as fair as possible in allocating them to the standby ticket holders.

If you would like to join us with standby tickets on Saturday 1st March for 'Eurovision: Your Decision', then please reply by email confirming all of the following information:

Your name:

Your postcode:

Number of standby tickets (max 6):

We will allocate the standby tickets in the order that we receive replies to this email.

Please do not request standby tickets unless you are able to use them. The minimum age of attendance at this show is 16.

If you have already received tickets for the day, or are attending with a friend who has been allocated tickets, then you may be receiving this email in response to a second application that you have made. That original booking is not affected - please do not apply for further tickets.

Please note that as this is one of the most popular shows that we look after, we may not be able to issue standby tickets to everyone who requests them.

Apologies if you are unsuccessful in your application, but we hope you enjoy the show on tv and hope to see you at a future recording. We shall keep your details on our mailing list and let you know when future events are announced.

Kind regards

What do you think? is it worth going? I live about 250 miles away from London.

Some news:

-France and Greece are due to make their selection very soon.
-The UK have given out previews of the songs. (not looking all too hopeful)
-Speculation has begun regarding San Marino's first ever entry. Will it be Jalisse once more? (Fiumi Di Parole - 1997, came 4th place are applying to represent San Marino).

In other news, is this not the sexiest Eurovision performance ever!?

Kari Tapio - Valaise Yö

Vuokko Hovatta - Virginia (http://youtube.com/watch?v=NUBgzYPKuMg)

I'm sure the BBC will post the show on their free player so when it becomes available I'll post it on the front page seeing as there's lots of British members that tend to come on board at this point.

In the live version, the performance is very energetic but the song itself sounds much clearer and stronger than the confusing recorded version. She's gone from my least favourite to favourite surprisingly. Simona's outfit was awful btw. Just think Sylvia Knight with red hair, better vocals and less personality and you have Simona. :/ (Actually scratch that, Silvia had MORE clothes on! :yik:)

MiCkiZ88
01-03-08, 19:50
Silvia Knight? You're not talking about that entry from Iceland are you? :pi:

The same goes for Movetrons entry in the finals. They sounded much better as did Vuokko Hovatta. I'm still bitter that those two didn't get picked. =/ Movetrons entry was energetic and rather catchy and Vuokko Hovattas entry was just beautiful. Shame this country only votes for 'metal' music.

Reggie
01-03-08, 19:58
^You should be grateful, our country only votes for cheese thinking its the only thing Europe will accept. The BBC have a very cynical view of the contest whereas the eastern european and scandinavian countries + Malta still consider Eurovision differently from us.

I mean, this is our entry from 2003
KYaeuUUAn4A

and from 2006
IaUoKQmgbl8

and from 2007
NBOnDcmckdc

The ones in between were forgettable as is any of our potential entries for this year I think (as good as it is within our national final). We need to stop complaining about bloc voting and actually pull our fingers out and produce a decent song and singer to go to Eurovision 2009. (Hopefully it will be in Malta, Valletta! :D).

And that, my friend is why I and many others despair at how the UK has dismally failed and its quite obvious why no one votes for us.

MiCkiZ88
01-03-08, 20:07
My EARS!! And I thought our entries have been crap. *shudders*

:o

The 2003 entry has a good Intro which could've easily turned in to good dance song, but instead she forces an icepick through my ears with her voice. Okay that's over exaggerating, but.. damn! I remember the what ever school song from 06 and that actually made me laugh, but your 07 entry.. eh, lets not go there.

Reggie
01-03-08, 20:15
I know, I know. The funny thing is we vote for this crap and then wonder afterwards whether there's some kind of conspiracy the east against us. Ok fine, everyone had a case against us in 2003 for going to war with Iraq but there should no excuses for the drivel we've sent. Its just an insult.

Our national final results will be through within the hour. Continues at 9:30. :)

MiCkiZ88
01-03-08, 20:19

I was listening to Sertab earlier. Very catchy song with a performance. Oops, did I just say exactly what Michelle's song would have been? Silly me, thinking she would win it.
To be fair, I'm not half as annoyed as last year though and the public went against what the pathetic judges were saying. They were so smug it was cringeworthy.

Why is it, that the mainstream never ever agrees with me on something?

Hmm...well I'd say judging by the song, it was the old people who had their sway in the vote...saying that, I can at least be safe in knowing we've chosen dignity this time around. Ireland has sacrificed that as we have time and time again recently.

Andy is like the equivalent of TR:Legend, its mediocre and has as much substance as Candy Floss but at least its a polished performance I suspect will regain us some respect rather than ridicule.

And that's my attempt to look on the bright side. :p
Funnily enough, I think you're right about the songs not being so good this year.

Yeah...I think many have been they haven't heard a winner yet well I don't think we will now. Unless Russia or San Marino pulls something out the bag. Russia always puts in a lot of effort and the Italian/San Marinese entry may have an element of class most of the others lack. I've not much hope for the others.

Orchestra!? Well that's something and definitely raises quality, IMO.
Well I certainly apreciate you for making a playlist for it. :)

Ah, I thought you had two? My memory is playing tricks with me. I wonder how many bottom places Finland has gotten?

Yeah, there was always an orchestra up until 1999 where it was made optional and Israel decided against one and every subsequent country has since decided against one too. I hope that San Marino has an orchestra if it goes back there, the Italians have always been mad about their orchestra/instruments. There was one in the Italy 1997 video I posted a couple pages back and there's still an orchestra for their huge annual festival too so there's still hope. Really makes a difference, especially to the non-cheesy pop songs.

I've googled it and it says Finland have gotten 0 three times. None in over 20 years though.

We always pick ****e songs for Eurovision.

I agree with you Tom, this song i very forgetable.

To be honest I didn't like any of the acts that performed.

Its not been very good since 2002 has it? :(
I think the quality was better overall this year at least.

Ah, I wondered why Dana's song sounded so different in the Eurovision. No techno pop sounds used. Personally I don't care as I'm used to them, but they do make an difference and it certainly would mean better music if there would be more live orchestra usage.

Thanks for googling that up. Well we've had our fair share of 'crap' music as well.

Reggie

Techno pop sounds WERE allowed but only with the computer on stage to ensure it was still 'live'. :vlol:

Hah, hahah! Well that certainly sounds weird. It would've been the same to just have the pre recorded sound effects play on the back and the orchestra playing. :p

Ok, here's Michelle's entry from last night:

Yes, Andy is a better singer, but which one would have gotten noticed? I think we all know...
I actually think Simona should have won though:

On a perkier note, Charlotte Perelli has been put through to the grand final of Melodifestivalen with this song:

I happen to think its better than most of the songs I've heard so far this year.

I LOVE Charlotte Perrelli's song "Hero". It's best song in years and it has the international sound mixed with classic Swedish Eurovision sound.
I just hope it wins the finals in Sweden.

MiCkiZ88
02-03-08, 15:44
Alright. Michelle's song and the whole perfomance was really energetic and it definitely would've been noticed. Simona's song was a bit different and good, but not as noticable as Michelles. I'm not sure which I prefer. Both definitely beat Andy though.

Hero song is alright and definitely different from all the Abba wannabe entries from Sweden.

Yep, that's true :] I think he's a great singer, and the song is good enough, but it's all a bit too good for the Eurovision, and I can see we won't win again. But oh well, I have a bit more hope since we have a good singer.

I'm yet to hear too many of the other country's songs ... does anyone know when they'll be on the Eurovision website to view the videos of too?

Today (March 8) was decided that the comediant David Fernández (as the character Rodolfo Chikilicuatre) is going to represent Spain in Belgrade with the song "Baila el ChikiChiki". Can you tell me what you think about the song?:

I think that song is horrible too :hea:...

Reggie
09-03-08, 13:28
What on earth are all the countries thinking this year!?
We've got a few good songs, a large amount of mediocre/forgetful ones and then the Irish, Estonian, Bosnian, Spanish, Croatian, Azeri and Latvian entries which just drive the final nail into the coffin of Eurovision even being considered as a song contest this year.

I mean compare these two entries:

Ireland 2008
JGLehqqgkC0

Ireland 1996
kpqq9K6MlyU

Bring back the cultural/language emphasis, bring back the orchestra, cut down on how many countries are participating and give countries a real choice at their national finals. Ok, so these measures probably aren't even extensive enough but for the love of god please do something about this sorry situation for 2009! :(

I'll update the first post later on.

And yeah, good costumes always seem to win. :vlol:

Anyway, once you spoke of Ireland,Reggie, here it is a legendary one, the all time best according to my mother :D! I confess though I like celtic music, that wasn't my favourite, but it sure illustrates your point.

Hardly anyone seems to take Eurovision seriously anymore. It's become pure trash IMO. The voting sucks, the songs are beyond bearable and the more costumes you have on, the better the performance. Pfft. No wonder I've lost interest for the competition. It's more like a freak show.

Pipolinne

I guess there's some consolation in that Terry Wogan will have plenty of ammunition this year to mock the songs that are ironically supposed to be mocking the contest but instead turn to the contest into nothing more than a mockery anyway. Oh the irony of it all! :p

@Pipolinne:And yes, that's a classic one you posted Pipolinne. Do you have any updates regarding your national selection? I hope Portugal does the right thing and sends in something decent. You never know, you guys could have your first ever victory on the way.

@Micki: It seems that Verka from last year has obviously caused a lot of impact on this year's contest. In addition, the eastern countries now know they're guaranteed votes, whilst the West have given up knowing they're facing an uphill struggle to even get a top 10 placing. A sorry situation but if we see a repeat of this year next year, then I may consider whether Eurovision is for me anymore. Hopefully its just a blip and we'll see a much stronger contest next year.

I really do hope so. We need more quality and variety (even our media mocks people for voting for Metal music again.. no doubt the drunk & ''hard core'' metal fans voted for our entry) in the competition. I might just watch this years competition for a laugh.

Pipolinne
09-03-08, 15:08
We'll have our contest this night,Reggie.

I doubt we would win: we had great songs, but they're too political, and now...well,they're dreadful.

I think most Western countries thought they could all send the same old thing, but the point is most original songs are coming from Eastern countries or from countries who are innovating, like Greece.

Verka's was a very strong critic to Russia,not only a mockery of Eurovision,so I think that's a special situation

Anyway,mockery or not,Eurovision is something special :D!

These were,in my opinion, the best we ever produced: Desfolhada, by Simone de Oliveira,1969 and E depois do adeus, by Paulo de Carvalho, 1974. The first ( the title is a reference to some agricultural practice and, metaphorically, it's a reference to fertility rituals, etc) mentioned having sex for pleasure, a scandal for a country living in a dictatorship like ours and the second was used as password to our revolution :).

Rodolfo Cikilicuatre Finally, a comic of a TV program, making the role of a possible representative for Eurovision is the winner.
It's called David Fernandez, and often improvises his appearances on the program according to the daily news.
One day appeared disguised, as always, to give life to his character, he sang an absurd song and people, the public, in a laughter apotheosis , with happy people , to be our representative. So what began as a joke, has become the final decision for our representation. :cln::D
Ël really is a fun character, and his performances are really fun.;):)

There's nothing that special about Dima Bilan in my opinion but this lady, Maksim - she's something special indeed. Can't place my finger on it! :tmb:

Here in the UK, we have so many great singers but many here look at eurovision as a joke so we don't bother sending anyone decent. In an ideal world we'd have people like Oasis, Leona Lewis, Take That, KT Tunstall, Robbie Williams, Annie Lennox open to taking part in the contest. Unfortunately we end up sending the has beens, or never weres instead. :(

o_0! There was such a small competition, where Bilan won because of money...(((( Maksim wasn't in Moscow and couldn't take a part at a competition.....if she take, she win....she is the most popular russian singer! and Bilan - ild told story....he is a singer for 4-5 years and he is very dull!

It involves some really complex rules, some similar to the ones used by UEFA when sorting the groups.

I like the new voting system but the bottom line is that last year, the only divide between east and west was song quality, with the east bringing us a much stronger crop of songs. Thankfully there's no longer such a divide this year and so there should be absolutely no excuses - its crunch time essentially. Either Austria (and other bitter countries like Spain and Ireland) will end up looking like total fools or there'll be further withdrawals in protest, possibly a collapse of the contest altogether. I don't think it will come to the latter though.
