View Full Version : Pink is the new black!

In one of the books you can read in Lara's home, it says "pink is the new black".
Is this a nod (or a reply:p) towards some fans "dislike" of Legend Lara, and calling her "Barbie" and such? Or am I reading into it too much?
It's an interesting easter egg.

It could be a reference to Legend's revival of the series and lifting it from it's 'darker days' i.e. AoD.

Another example could be in Legend, when Lara is in Ghana and the boulder starts to roll towards her and Zip asks 'you hear something'. Lara replies 'I feel something'. I always thought that may have been a little mickey-take of AoD and the 'I feel stronger now' fiasco.

I don't know, sounds pretty ironic to me. Maybe whoever put that in the game wasn't too happy with barbiefications like pink outfits.

This is from the website of the University of Pennsylvania:
"The phrase is commonly attributed to Gloria Vanderbilt, who upon visiting India in the 1960s noted the prevalence of pink in the native garb. She declared that "Pink is the new black", meaning that the color pink seemed to be the foundation of the attire there, much like black was the base color of most ensembles in New York."

and

"In the swinging '60's, Gloria Vanderbilt visited India. Everybody was wearing wild colors, but there was lots of pink. She said "Pink is the new black." It's now a fashion cliche: "_________ is the new black," which changes every year."

Clicky (http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/003981.html) to read the whole article and another clicky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Vanderbilt) to know more about Gloria Vanderbilt :)

I don't care about that line.

And why would pink only be for girls and barbie and all that stuffs? It's a colour for god sake.

Then Lara can't wear green, black, blue or brown etc.. Cause that's for guys and
Action man.

:p

(BTW. Don't take this post too serious. But still this true. Pink is a colour and has nothing with Barbie to do)

From the instant I heard that line in the game, I took it to mean that pink = Legend (due to all of the "barbie" insults about Lara wearing pink) and black = AOD (due to all of the complaints about it being dark and Lara being gothy). So I interpretted that line to mean that Legend has replaced AOD. I like AOD and I hate Legend, but I was really amused by that line because it seems clever to me. If only the "jokes" in Legend had that degree of subtlety and symbolism, I might not have been so aggravated while playing it :)

I instantly thought the developers were having a dig at all the Barbie-raider comments but especially the pokes about giving pink outfit options in Legend. Pink Legend outfit, etc.

But I didn't think the Black referred to AoD (because "X is the new black" is such a common phrase, it didn't need that extra reference to work). I thought they were just thumbing their noses at us lot, like - :p:p:p:p:p:p

And I agree with you, a bit of subtlety there if indeed that is what they meant.

It's common for *any* women to care about looks. It's anthropology. I believe this phrase is there to reinforce the double edge why Lara is so attractive: she's a whole woman in every aspect, *and* she escapes from the horrid social-cultural cliches being brave, temperamental and strong.

That phrase is, as noted, pretty common and famous, like "first things first" or "Hasta la vista, Baby". It's there to make it noticeable that Lara is not only interested in archeollogy and history. It's like "this is a fashion book", and it's besides the bed, so Lara is also pretty insterested in fashion, IMHO. It humanizes Lara, and I like it.

I find really funny the concept of "TR-ish", most of all 'cause it's completely subjective. That's why I find it so funny to classify stuff in "TR-ish" and "Non TR-ish". Something can feel "TR-ish" for you, and maybe not for me. And something may feel "TR-ish" for me, and not for you. It depends on how you enjoy the series, or your tastes, or whatever. To me, the joy of TR games is that none of them are original at all, but a mix of nice stuff from previous games. That's the key to its success: it's a very good mixture.

so a woman has to be interested in fashion/makeup or she's too masculine and manly?
classic lara didnt care about fashion, didnt wear makeup, and portrayed attractive woman. thats what she's suppose to be. not some girly, overemotional "pink is the new black!" kind of woman.

It is not stereotype at all. Im quite innterested in what I wear and im a guy!

Classic Lara didn't hace any interest except catching the bad guy. She was rather ugly in TR4-5 too. In AoD she got more of a 'fashion' sense and they kept it like that in the new games.

Exactly my thoughts. Lara in AOD wears makeup and her clothes match. The denim jacket and pants were fashion in 2003. Just check old magazines. But oh, AOD is by Core so I guess it's right ;)

But why care? Anything added by Crystal Dynamics seems to be like heresy! :vlol: Kill the heathens!!! :D

Seriously, guys, I think we are getting way too bored to discuss the smallest detail. She likes pink. She likes cats or peanuts. How is that important? The game is about jump and run and take objects, solve puzzles and kill nasties. How is something like a random sentence that important? Next thread: "There's a black pixel in a texture in a wall in the mansion!! CD suxxxxx!!!!1" ;)

Again, we are getting too bored. We better replay some of the games :D

You know I was agreeing with you until you started with this nonsense. Please get over yourself. Core defined what is or isn't TR. Obviously CD is still figuring out how to make a proper TR. And while the outfits aren't TR-ish, they are one of the nice features that CD added that do a lot to attract younger players.

If you don't like Lara in pink, then don't put her in a pink outfit.

However, I know that I could kick most of your asses no matter what color I'm wearing. It's not my favorite color but I wear pink sometimes because it actually looks good on my skintones.

From Wiki New Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_new_black):
Because the phrase is so familiar, it is now sometimes used in absurd contexts as a signifier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_%28semiotics%29) instead of as a metaphor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor).
Further it has significance in current programming language development:

and http://awis.blogspot.com/2007/10/this-post-is-new-black.html

and Design : http://www.neublack.com

It could simply be an inside joke from the programming department.

Not only that, it could mean that they realize that their fanbase is not just teenage testorone-filled boys, it could be acknowledging the female fanbase of Tomb Raider, which is a positive thing, for proof check this out:

Pink -- 'the new black'

The color we associate with infant girls' nurseries has become a star, baby _ a glittering, center-stage player that has stepped far beyond its bit part as a ruffle or flourish.
Pink is spreading amid traditional team colors in hockey arenas and baseball bleachers as more and more female fans grab up sports regalia marketed just for them.
Whether it's a candy-pink Razr cell phone or a pink-and-white fitted NASCAR shirt, women and teenage girls are buying sportswear, jewelry, sneakers, furniture, kitchen appliances, electronics and even furs in this shade. It's even spread to wine, where Australia's Yellowglen winery is marketing to women its brand Pink in standard wine bottles or purse-sized miniatures called Pink Piccolos.
"We're saying pink is the new black," said Mike Gatti, executive vice president of the Retail Advertising & Marketing Association in Washington.
Sportswear designed specifically for female fans began arriving in 2003, the year a black-and-white Pittsburgh Penguins hockey jersey was specifically made for the female silhouette, said Karen Ford, merchandise manager for Aramark.
"Prior to that time, it was all unisex," she said.
"It's unbelievable how long it took people to realize that women's shapes weren't unisex shapes or men's shapes," said Ford.
The marketing of team sportswear to women, Ford estimated, has generated an additional 15 percent to 20 percent more revenue.
Women's reaction to pink has not always been so rosy.
Fifty years ago, in fact, the color bombed as a marketing tool when Dodge tried to sell women its pink LaFemme car, complete with matching rosebud floral interior and rose leather handbag.
But now, "Pink has become as ubiquitous as black," said Constance White, style director for eBay in New York City. "Who would have thought that?"
Pink's recent rise in popularity, White said, began in the late 1990s when Tom Ford used it in fashions he designed for Gucci.
"Tom used it not only in the same way one would use black, in blouses and pants _ he also used it in embellishments, say, on jeans. He used it in menswear," she recalled.
The second-biggest influence came from urban rappers of the hip-hop culture. "You could never wear pink. That just wasn't cool. When hip-hop embraced pink, that gave it the imprimatur of cool," White said, adding: "I know that a couple of the people in the rap world have had their cars customized in pink."
The color spread to jewelry, and the competitive worlds of racing and athletics took notice, too.
Susan Rothman, vice president of consumer products for the NFL, said the organization's revenues from selling women's merchandise tripled between 2003 to 2004 and doubled between 2004 and last year.
"By far, our most important color has been pastel-pink," Rothman said.
NASCAR also is seeing rapid sales since it introduced products for women.
"Women are the fastest-growing part of our fan base," said Scott Warfield, manager of public relations for the Charlotte, N.C., division of NASCAR, adding that sales of NASCAR sportswear to them has grown fivefold in the past five years.
"Forty percent of the NASCAR fans are women. They want to have outfits that not only fit but are also a little bit fashionable," Warfield said, adding that by August, female NASCAR fans will be able to buy pumps with tiny spinners for $99 a pair. The shoes are from a company called Genius Fashion, which also will sell NASCAR-themed Western-style boots.
At the more affordable end of the scale are racing shirts, skirts and hoodies _ many in pink _ available at www.trackcouture.com. Co-founders Lisa Maria Heros and Diane Kathleen Smith of Memphis, Tenn., designed the clothes after they were given track outfits that didn't suit their fashion sense. They started their online business about two months ago.
Kenny Gamble, senior director of merchandising for Reebok, oversees its product lines for the NFL.
About four years ago, the NFL compiled research and "identified women as major consumers of their brands," Gamble said. The NFL gave Reebok an exclusive license to make team jerseys and head gear.
"Reebok decided to design our products with women in mind as it related to fit, color and how the product functions."
White believes that pink may be peaking. But it's opened the door to other pastels.
"Lavender is becoming popular," she said, especially in blouses for women, along with pastels such as baby-blue and mint-green.

Running, strength training with weights, core conditioning, boxing/kickboxing with a heavy bag, and bicycling are among my favorite exercise regiments.

I'm slightly out of my target range at the moment but it never takes me longer than a couple of weeks to be back in top form.

Well, you do personify "Pink is the New Black" :D

and to get this thread back on track, I think that "pink is the new black" is a funny line for the game, the developers have a sense of humor, and I'm bewildered at how people read into things.

She could've said. "there's a sports bra sale at Sports Authority" and it would've been just as funny.
...or funnier.
