Not yet. But it could still be canceled. It's too soon to say.

Regarding the Oscar picks, I didn't have time to go out and see most of the movies nominated this year so I'm going to stay out of the loop on this one. I only concern myself with best original score and best cinematography anyway. :wve:

What surprised me a lot this year was Michael Clayton, which seemed to get four main nominations, while Sweeney Todd got only the actor one. Clooney getting a nomination rather than Gosling or McAvoy was a surprise as well. Also, what's up with Enchanted getting no less than three of it's original songs nominated?

Anyway, I haven't seen most of them, but these would be my opinions for some categories (avoiding the technical ones, which I'm not really familiar with):

Picture
My pick: Atonement
The winner will be: No Country For Old Men

Directing

The "oscar movies" are so predictable... Apart from Sweeney Todd, it's all the same huge human drama typical stories. BORING.

I just hope Daniel Day Lewis wins (he probably will) because he's like the GOD of actors, for me personally. And Casey Affleck because his performance is really out of this world in Jesse James.

Oh and Transformers for best visual effects. :p

I hope Juno wins something! It really was a witty film, the dialog was just spot on.

I'm sick of hearing about Atonement though. It was filmed in the town next to mine (well the beach bits) and I even know a few people who were extras in it ... but meh. Suppose it would be good for Redcar (the town) ...wouldn't it? :S

Well, I found it kinda cool that a movie about gangs and drugs and psychopaths wins the big categories :jmp: It's certainly diferent from the usual "human drama" stories I mentioned. I CAN'T WAIT to go see No Country For Old Men this week!
My movie idol Daniel Day Lewis won but then again, we all knew that. ;)

The biggest disapointments for me were

a) no big tribute to Heath Ledger and

b) the Academy has kept the tradition of making one huge gaffe every year: this time it was not giving ONE SINGLE TECH AWARD to Transformers. Unforgivable, imo. All special fx experts and movie buffs agree that movie was groundbreaking in terms of visual effects and sound.

That's how I feel! I mean I understand that society is getting more and more violent, but the movie didn't really make me think about that other than me already knowing its motives...nothing spectacular...

That's why I really enjoyed atonement...I love the entire idea of life and love being a 'story,' or 'atonement' in this case.

And I just watched part of "There Will Be Blood" and I must say I am impressed. It has drawn my attention and I thing Daniel Day Lewis is Excellent! I can understand why he won! I can't wait to see the rest of it! Wonderful film so far.

I thought Juno was cute, but I don't get all the hype...I think "Hard Candy" deserves a bigger nod. It's got Ellen Page in it aswell, and it's also an incredible film.

Michael Clayton was excellent and Tilda Swinton did a magnificent job.

I actually recognized her, (we tend to have a perpetual game of trivia in our house) pegging her as the Witch from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, but that was the first time that I was impressed enough with her performance to watch the credits to get her name.

and Encore, I totally agree, there was no way to beat Daniel Day-Lewis this year. He's amazing.

I don't agree that Johnny Depp will have to wait for recognition postmortem, but Johnny has a bright future and is making some excellent picture choices.

But hey, you have selected a couple of movies that in fact deserved the award. There are about another 50% of movies that didn't. I checked all the past winners in the oscars page and here's a couple of obvious mistakes (at least imo):

Shakespeare In Love (which won against Saving Private Ryan )
Chicago
Million Dollar Baby
Dances With Wolves
Driving Miss Daisy
Ordinary People
Kramer vs Kramer (which won against Apocalypse Now!!!!)
The Sound of Music (against Dr Zhivago!!)
My Fair Lady (against Dr Strangelove)

etc

I'd have to argue Dances With Wolves and Driving Miss Daisy, but I guess there were a lot of hollywood divorces the year of KRAMER Vs KRAMER :p

It's actually a good movie, but against Apocalypse Now?? Smells of politics.
Yes I agree that they often have made a wrong-turn, but again the voters are 1) from an incestuous society where politics and internal rivalries and contentions are sometimes predominant in their choices, and 2) The academy is pretty flakey, and this has been documented, often voting for someone because they've been overlooked before, and etc like that.

Couldn't agree more. He was a little unlucky this year, because Daniel Day Lewis was brilliant. But his performance in Sweeney Todd was so touching, the best for me.

I think Casey Affleck has more screen time and lines than Brad Pitt in Jesse James.

It's the producers deciding who will they apply for awards as leading and who as supporting. It's known to happen that an actually leading role is in the supporting category, cause that way it gets less competition.

And yeah, as already said, I think Sweeney Todd was completely ignored in the nominations - it should have got Adapted Screenplay and Director noms.
Juno is great, but that movie lies completely on it's brilliant script (for which Cody totally deserved an Oscar she got). Reitman as a director wasn't that great.

You said it right, in a whole different level, the worst in academy is this, they actually IMO they don't judge the actors performance, rather compare it to each other, ok not saying the "there will be blood" is bad, is a good movie but just my opinion. Using physicality to drive a narrative forward has always been on the anti-intellect fringe with award judges but now again one makes it through the cracks - like Rocky. Those suits opinions don't count for much anyway...it's the fans that settle on the shelf life longevity of movies through the years.

Exactly. Award season is fun to follow but it doesn't set the ultimate standards. Just think about movies like Star Wars, or Seven, or Donnie Darko, or Pulp Fiction... Cult movies are usually overlooked by the awards. It doesn't prevent them from becoming classics.

And guys, stop whining about Johnny Depp, it's great that he was even nominated, he simply couldn't stand a chance against Daniel Day Lewis!!! In fact, none of those guys can.

I agree. Daniel Day Lewis is Amazing in There Will Be Blood, and pretty much every movie that he is in. Johnny Depp is a great actor, but you can't just say he deserves the oscar when the competition is there. If you think about it, winning Oscars is more about luck and whether the competition is tight that particular year. I think they should all get Oscars for the brilliant movies they have made instead of making it a yearly competition. I mean I'm sure that Johnny would have won had be been up for the award a different year. As I get older I understand why the Academy chooses the movies it does...they are usually different, and invoke a passionate feeling in the viewer.

The only film I didn't think deserved the nod won the nod. lol. No Country was no where near as good as There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd, or Atonement. imo at least. ;)

I'd have to agree with you. The Coens haven't done anything worthwhile since The Man Who Wasn't There. And I'm just fed up seeing Tommy Lee Jones chasing people. I think it was just their round to be acknowledged based on their body of work, which for the most part is fantastic.

Perhaps, though I wish it had happened at a different time. I really can't get over how fantastic "There Will Be Blood" was. I enjoyed it completely, a 10 out of 10! I would have loved to have seen it pick up the best motion picture of the year. It really was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

And that is known to happen, just look at Scorsese's win last year.

It was a nice film, but There Will Be Blood is a freaking masterpiece! :tmb:
