Mystery image of 'life on Mars'

An image of a mysterious shape on the surface of Mars, taken by Nasa spacecraft Spirit, has reignited the debate about life on the Red Planet.

A magnified version of the picture, posted on the internet, appears to some to show what resembles a human form among a crop of rocks.

While some bloggers have dismissed the image as a trick of light, others say it is evidence of an alien presence.

The image is a recent Nasa posting of the Spirit's landing in 2004.

Perspective

When the robotic rover set down on 24 January 2004, its images disappointed space-watchers hoping for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Now they appear convinced that this image provides the evidence they have been trawling Nasa's photo files for.

The blown-up image seems to resemble a figure striding among the Martian rocks.

The internet has been abuzz with postings offering theories.

One said it was a garden gnome, another that it was the Virgin Mary.

A third suggested Bigfoot, the hairy bipedal mountain beast that appears in various guises in a number of legends around the world.

But the consensus seemed to be that it bore a striking resemblance to the Little Mermaid statue in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

Poster "Madurobob" said it was a statue "obviously built by an ancient civilisation that later departed Mars and settled Denmark".

Badastronomy.com tried to apply some perspective: "A man? It's a tiny rock only a few inches high. It's only a few feet from the rover!"

Very interesting! I still maintain my belief that there is extra-terrestrial life out there, even if the picture shown in the link doesn't really show an alien!

I don't believe there is any life on Mars, personally. I mean, maybe there was a long time ago, but I think everything has died off...

Should we be able to see this in the picture from the link? I see two areas that if I really want to believe are figures, I would, but I'm skeptical.

I wanna see the alien! :(

I believe there is life somewhere in space, maybe not on Mars, but somewhere.

There's a bigger (but lower quality) image of the 'alien' in this link, just to ensure you know what I'm referring to. :) :

I thought that's what it was. I can definitely see a form there, but it's still really inconclusive. At best, it looks more like statue than a living being.

Pretty cool, though.

I genuinly believe on no other life besides the one's on Earth. BUT, supposedly the indication of water suggests that life is possible. And, they found indication, (not traces,) of water several years/months ago on Mars.

:cln:  spooooky.

BTW, has anyone here been keeping track of that planet on another solar system that has the similar characteristics as Earth?

If it was a woman would just say "its looks like a rock or a statue", but the man must be depressed to see a naked woman in mars hehe, and even its "true" i don't think it will looks exactly like a earth human.

I don't see it, whatever thats supposed to be.

There could be life on Mars, buts it's probably bacteria or simple micro-organisms and its probably buried below the surface.

There are several species of bacteria and micro-organisms from Earth that would probably survive if you put them on Mars.

Just like our ancient ancestors saw anthropomorphic shapes in the constellations, we're seeing what we want to see in this image. It's probably just a funny-shaped bit of rock, but there's always the chance it could be something else...

That is seriously creepy...but honestly I don't think there's life on Mars....because the conditions there are not suitable for life. Then again, probably there ARE living beings there that adapt to the environment there, in ways that we have yet to discover...very interesting! :tmb:

Whats 'he' supposed to be doing. Waiting for a bus?
*all the Martians gather round*
"Here comes that satellite again - your turn"
"Bloody humans. Lets flash 'em"
"I did it last time. Still got moonburn from mooning the satellite"
"Ok then, I sit here on this rock and think what to do next time, hopefully they won't see me"
"Ok then, we'll hide under this outcrop"
"Damn, they spotted me"

Poor, lonely, little Martian. He looks so bored. He could do with some cheering up. Maybe he's just sad he can't find any other Martians on the planet. Or maybe he's a bit of an EMO.
