Australia Day, celebrated annually on 26th January (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/26th_January), is the official national day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day) of Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia), commemorating the establishment of the first European settlement on the continent of Australia. The date is that of the foundation of a British penal colony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_colony) at Sydney Cove (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Cove) on Port Jackson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Jackson), New South Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales), by Captain Arthur Phillip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Phillip), who was to become the first Governor.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Day#_note-.3FNADCHistory) Australia Day is an official public holiday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holiday) in all states and territories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_territories_of_Australia) of Australia, and has also been known as Anniversary Day or Foundation Day.
On Australia Day each year, the Prime Minister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Australia) announces the winner of the Australian of the Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_of_the_Year) award, presented to an Australian citizen who has shown a "significant contribution to the Australian community and nation", and is an "inspirational role model for the Australian community".[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Day#_note-0) Subcategories of the award include "Young" and "Senior Australian of the Year", and an award for the "Australian Local Hero".
Records of the celebration of Australia Day date back to 1808 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1808_in_Australia), and in 1818 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1818_in_Australia), Governor Lachlan Macquarie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachlan_Macquarie) held the first official celebration of Australia Day.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Day#_note-nsw-hist) In 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_in_Australia), an estimated 7.5 million people attended Australia Day celebrations and functions across the country.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Day#_note-nsw-hist)

Wow, I'm jealous. I worked a lot of holidays recently and I get time and a half for $14.50 an hour :p.

What do you typically do on Australia Day? Waitangi Day here tends to be a somewhat controversial holiday.

There's no real "set" way of celebrating Australia Day.

Everyone just does their own thing.

Some go to the beach, some have a BBQ.

Me, I'll be working a 12 hour shift hehe

Happy Australia Day!

Didn't realise it until you made this topic. Last year I spent it in Canberra and the Australian Alps. This year I can't celebrate it because I'm in Greece! :D
