Do you folks identity first with the username of your recipient, or their avatar? Don't worry, I'm not killing avatars. I'm wondering how you folks identify other members here.

I usually recognize avatars first, then I check the name to make sure my initial recognition was correct :)

Usually the avatar first. Could take a little getting-used-to when they switch avatars. But in your case, the penguin is already iconic, since it's long been there. Should be the same case if people don't change their avatars for years. :D

Avatar. That's why when they change them it takes me a while to adjust to it. Particularly to those who do so frequently.

Mr.Burns
02-02-08, 02:35
Avatars for the most part.

AmericanAssassin
02-02-08, 02:37
I used to go by avatar, but then people started changing theirs all the time, so now it's pretty equal... :)

Avatars. Though, some people do constantly change their avatars and it makes it hard to keep up. Not me, however. Mine rules and it's staying that way. :tmb:

02-02-08, 03:21
Avatars mostly. So it's a tad weird when people have very similiar (if not the same) avatars.

Genocide
02-02-08, 03:23
I recognise unique avatars...but i get confused by the Lara ones so i have to go by usernames...it makes it more confusing when they have names like Tomb_R_Wannabe1872 or something along those lines

MrBear
02-02-08, 06:45
The avatar mostly, because you always sense it at the peripheri of your eye and often that's enough to know whose post your about to read, but sometimes it takes a glance at the username :)

02-02-08, 06:58

Usually I identify people with their Avatars and then check their username

tampi
02-02-08, 09:19
I have had that strive my mind to recognize the user names. At first I was guided by the avatar. But now identified more by usernames.
Anyway I like to see people that keeps their avatar. :)

Legends
02-02-08, 09:51
Avatars first, then username.

EgyptianSoul
02-02-08, 10:05
Both. Both usernames and avatars are what define people here. :)

MikeAC
02-02-08, 10:12
Usernames. The quote boxes tend to make things easier on remembering who's who.

Reggie
02-02-08, 10:17
It used to be Avatars but I've been here long enough now to recognise people by Username. :)

02-02-08, 10:38
Yeah, I do tend to notice avatars first, and then check their usernames afterwards. Some avatars just jump out at me, to help notice people.

VonCroy360
02-02-08, 10:39
Both. Most of the time I notice the avatar first, but if it's one of the many Lara avatars, then I use the name. :)

02-02-08, 11:17
Avatars mostly. Sometimes I'll even think I'm talking to someone else if they have a similar avatar to the person I was expecting... I'll look at the name if the avatar doesn't ring any bells.

Tomb Raider Master
02-02-08, 11:34
I notice them by their avatars. It's easier.

danitiwa
02-02-08, 11:39
Telepathy.

:p

A litte bit of both I guess, you can't depend on avatars, because people change them, but yes. Avatars are sort of "how the person is visually remembered".

Dark Lugia 2
02-02-08, 11:40

02-02-08, 12:43
I usually see avatars first, so in case of people who have distinctive avatars, or simply have their username written on their avatars, that's enough. But if not, then I check the username. Of course, some people have unimaginative avatars and usernames, in which case I resort to telepathy. :p

b0bb13
02-02-08, 12:45
Both:)

tombraider123
02-02-08, 12:47
Telepathy obviously :p

Cochrane
02-02-08, 12:48
Avatar first. For people that I notice frequently, I start to remember the screen names as well, after a while.

What's difficult is people with generic names or avatars. Good examples are names like TombRaiderFan, LaraCroft4Eva!, CroftLover and similar (I just thought these up. Any relation to actual member names is pure coincidence). For avatars, any showing Lara Croft's face, especially if it's from Legend, Anniversary or Underworld, but to a lesser degree for all Laras, are hard. But hey, if they don't want me to remember them, not my problem.

Anubis_AF
02-02-08, 13:10
Avatar, definitely. Which is why I have trouble remembering who the same person was after they had changed their avatars.

Ada the Mental
02-02-08, 13:25
Avatars tend to jump out, they're easily caught by the eye. So I usually recognise people with distinctive avatars, or at least avatars that I'm familiar with, otherwise by their username.

Paperdoll
02-02-08, 13:41
I feel a buzz in my brain and suddenly I just know. The essence of those members just call out to me through the computer screen. And that my friend, is telepathy.

XD

Honestly, dunno really. I guess both.

bloodstormaoa
02-02-08, 13:42
I used to go by avatars initially, but once I developed telepathy, I found that to be more useful in recognising members.;)

tomblover
02-02-08, 13:42
Through avatar. :D

Once I thought Kooky was Chocolate simply because he had the same avatar that Chocolate once had. :p

Capt. Murphy
02-02-08, 13:43
I picked Both. At first I relate to the avatar, that get's me used/acquanted with their mannerisms, attitudes, demeaner, etc. Like if they're sassy, nasty, or whiney, or anything else, like actually cool. Then I relate those characteristics to the username.

Sometimes that's hard to do around here... Relating an avatar to the actual person. Like an ava with a girl in it. If it's a really pretty or sexy girl - It's a good bet the user is a dude that looks at that kind of stuff. Or if it's a greasy half naked guy - that's probly a dude too. Then there's the avatars of naked chicks with their goodies hidden just so. I'm confident those are gals just making a statement about themselves. They're too 'artsy' to be used by dudes. There was one person that used to be here, whatever the avatar was -that doesn't matter. They always talked like a female in heat. Turns out it was a dude. So sometimes neither one helps to reveal what a person is. I guess that's getting off-topic. But I always knew to watch out for that username. en, es, ef, dubya. :whi:

Larson_1988
02-02-08, 13:48
Both, but mostly the username. :)

petujaymz
02-02-08, 14:16
I voted Both.

I really don't understand why people change their avatars.

Changing mine now would be suicide.

:wve:

Sedge
02-02-08, 14:17
Whenever I notice someone new I first memorize the username, then connect it with the avatar. So avatars yeah, definitely. ^_^

I feel quite lost to be honest when someone changes their avatar to something completely different than it used to be.. But then again I've started to recognize people's "taste" so whenever someone like.. umm.. Angelus, MiCkiZ88, just to name a few(:p), changes I barely need to glance the username.

02-02-08, 16:07
Telepathy of course.

Well, I used to ID members by their avatars, but people change them wayyy too often (yes, I know I'm one of them :p) so I go by names more now.

Tina Croft
02-02-08, 16:11
actually both, but with the names i can be really sure.

02-02-08, 17:39
Both: members to whom I speak most, the avatar is almost inseparable from the username.

Concerning the others, the username is essential, even because there's a lot of members who change their avatars often.
