And I don't like it.

For one thing it automatically fades the end of a song, even if you don't envelope the file, or manually add fade in.

We're recording our old LP collection and I have found that actually pre-washing the albums carefully with soft soap and warm water (just like a CD or DVD which is what made me think of it) reduces the hiss and pop of our older albums, I'd still like more control over the mastering process.

In the meantime I've ditched Audacity and we're using the limited but robust Ion software "EZ Vinyl converter", and it works well but you have to be on top of timing or the result is having to "do over".

Back ten years ago I had some really good software that, I think! came from Source Forge. It worked great back then.

So what's better than Audacity?

I bought my first albums when I was 13, and still have most of them, (the ones that I've discovered didn't "walk away with a thief".) Luckily my favorites have already been replaced with digital purchases, but all but 3 of my Jimi Hendrix albums are gone, and I had 'em all. Those seemed to be the most popular with thieves. Several were missing the record but they thoughtfully left me the sleeves.

Sound Forge 9 (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/soundforgefamily.asp) - nothing more is necessary :)

Wow, that looks great, except for the $299 price tag! Still I may try it out.

at least they are cheaper than Adobe Audition which is $399.
