Seen as grey patches in this true-color Terra MODIS image, a number of large cities string along the northeast coast of the United States. The northernmost coastal city is New York City; moving toward the south and west are Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Baltimore, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Virginia; and Norfolk, Virginia. To the west and north, Pittsburgh is visible in southwestern Pennsylvania. Cleveland, Ohio, sits on the left edge of the image on Lake Erie's southern shore; also on the lake are (moving east) Erie, Pennsylvania, and Buffalo, New York. In Canada, at the top of the image, Toronto sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, while Rochester, New York sits at the center of the southern shore.

In this image, taken on August 24, 2003, the Appalachian Mountains look like dark green ripples stretching from northeastern Pennsylvania, through Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, and continuing toward the southwest.
