According to Wikipedia and WikiRaider, Lara found the Ark of the Covenant before the events of Tomb Raider. But I don't seem to remember that happening. Did she?

I've never heard such a thing. But I do know she found Big Foot! :D

Second one on the list.
So, was Lara in a comic book or something before the video game? Because I first knew of Tomb Raider when the original came out for PS1. Weird.

Tomb Raider first appeared in the first game on PC and PS1. But apparently she found the Ark of the Covenant before the events of that game. I first thought, maybe it's an easter egg in Chronicles or something, but it's not in there.
According to the WikiRaider timeline, she found the Ark in "Before 1996", which doesn't really help.

Yeah, doesn't help at all. Perhaps I'll look into this. :D

Now I know what the artefact in my dream Tomb Raider game should be... :)
It's near the front door of her mansion in TR1.

We never learn how she got it, but I guess she stole it from some Top Men. ;)

Oops, previous post mentions Top Men.
Strange.. I never noticed anything by the door.
I always loved that little smile by the door! (Well, it makes me smile everytime!) I believe it is a nod to Indiana Jones as the inspiration of the Tomb Raider Series. There's several throughout...the big boulder runs, dead Indy in teh spike traps of Cambodia (training level in Chronicles)...I know there are more, but can't think this early in the morning...
I wish we could play the adventure where she breaks into the United Stated holding facility and retrieves it (if ou believe the Indiana Jones storyline!). My only question is, how did she bring it out? According to the Bible, one touch of the Ark will kill a human.

It's there, for real. :) They left it out of Anniversary for copyright reasons (listen to the audio commentary in the manor for more information).
There's audio commentary? :p
Copyright reasons? How can the Ark of the Covenant be copyrighted?

Copyrighted in the Bible? :vlol:
Wait, if Jones has it copyrighted, then that means........ -gasp-

I wondered about that too! :jmp: But it's basically what they say: "Just in case it's trademarked." Of course it's not, the Ark of the Convenant is also used in "Broken Sword: The Angel of Death" and so on.
What's more likely: they just wanted to avoid the obvious clichéd similarities (Ark of the Covenant, Golden Idol) when they remade the game. Tomb Raider has grown up by now, it doesn't need Indiana Jones references any longer.

I had never realised before that it was the Ark Of The Covenant. Thanx for this lovely piece of information. :)
@Chi: :vlol: Nice one.

It isn't. Since no one knows for certain what the Ark looks like, there has been a vast number of renditions made throughout the years. The most famous being the version in Indiana Jones. Back when TR first came out, the visual effects made it possible to make the Ark look similar enough to the Indiana Jones version but not specific enough to it, that they would violate the trademarked design. This way, they got their inside joke put in, one that everyone would recognize and yet they wouldn't get in trouble with Lucasfilm. With TRA, the effects would have made it hard to put the Ark back in, remain recognizable yet not identical to the IJ version.
Incidentally, the design of the Ark is clearly written down in the Torah, but the smaller details were not hence the different versions.
Just a little reference picture:
Artist's conception (19th Century) - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4685/arkwi4.jpg
Tomb Raider (1996) - Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game (2006)
You see that the Ark looks very similiar to the movie version in the lesser known Broken Sword game. The Tomb Raider version actually has four angels on top of it, contradicting the description from the Bible.
Is there already a Costum Level about the Ark? ^^
Has anyone seen that special on the History channel of people actually searching for the Ark? 'Twas interesting.

Yes, though I found the African people with a Jewish genetic connection even more interesting - that was something that was more than speculation.

I wouldn't further this particular sub topic anymore. Film piracy is not tolerated here. If you want to watch it, go rent it or buy it.

Sorry. :o
I've always wondered what that thing was in front of Lara's front door. Thanks! :)

The Ark of the Covenant is *supposed to be a type of Leyden Jar or a Capacitor that holds an electric charge. It's wood (a non conductor) with gold (a very good electrical conductor) lining the inside and out. A Leyden jar has foil on the inside and out also. I've heard this idea put forth somewhere... And they said that is why nobody could touch it. They'd essetially be shocked to death. :o
*=By "supposed" I don't mean that's what it's original design was meant to be... That's just what it was as a coincidence... Maybe. ;-)
It's a very strange place to keep such a valuable artifact. :)

Yeah, but in the first one, she just moved in. :D

Now where does it say that? if i remember correctly she say's
"Sorry about the mess, but I'm having some things put into storage and the delivery people haven't been yet"
She was having the crates taken OUT of her home, she was already living there

After all, the Ark wasn't seen in the later TR games. :D

Well we don't exactly know what other priceless artifacts and whatnot were in those crates.
Like she said, they were being put into storage, They are still hers but they are stored safely off the premises
It's a wise move on Lara's part, especially with her being accused of 'stealing' artifacts before notifying people of her archeological discoveries, if she were to have any evidence on the grounds she'd be in BIIIIIG trouble
lol who knows what amazing artefacts Lara posesses :D
Yeah, imagine how angry all them few hundred or so gods are gonna be when they realized all their crap is gone. :vlol:

:vlol: i can imagine it now, Big ugly god wakes up from his 5'000 year nap, looks around puzzled before saying to himself "I left my coffee mug on that pedestal... I swear to... me i did"
Yeah, I think all she needs now is Satan's pitchfork.
