View Full Version : stand out moment for you?
hey i was just thinking about all the best stand out moments of this game, and i wanted to see if anyone agreed with my best moment. Now obviously the trex was on my list but at the top of my list was the skeleton in the caves at the beginning. you know the one thats not 3D in the corner of the room with the wolves? i realise its not a huge thing but when i first saw it i almost wet myself (i was pretty young lol). its the small things like that that make me love the first TR.
so what about you? what was your top stand out moment?
For me it had to be when i stood on top of the Sphinx in the Sanctuary of the Scion and the camera panned back revealing the surrounding area and totally dwarfing Lara in the process.
The sense of scale was just impressive, it totally blew my mind
^ Maybe I didn't remember it correctly.. I guess I'm thinking of both Genocide's moment and the music on the ground alone.. I do love that piece of music, one of my two favourites, so I guess that was enough to make it a grand moment? :p
(Edit: the following line is directed at Spaceman.. With Genocide posting before me and the insertion of the lines above, it doesn't show :)) Check out this member's avatar: http://www.tombraiderforums.com/member.php?u=31050 :p
There were a few, I think, but it's hard to remember what impressed me the most, seeing as it's more than a decade ago I played it for the first time (you're nowhere equally amazed the 2nd and 3rd times).. Although I think it's safe to say that Colisseum (spelling?) left me awe-struck by its sheer size and the atmosphere... It's so huge that I couldn't see the end of it!
Another moment was Sanctuary of the Scion, where you've reached the bottom of the sphinx cave and you're coming around to its front.. The music sets in and the camera zooms out and you wonder how to reach those accessible platforms so high above you :)

Near the beginning of the cistern level. When I stood at the edge looking down at the big space from so high above, hearing the wind blow.
When I think about this scene I remember why I loved this game.
Standing there, defying the elements, far below the large area going to be explored.
The great environmental sound and the wonderful ability to look around without moving are details which make the game so special.

There is also a moment at ground when the camera pans back to the ceiling, it's just as you go towards the door in the Sphinx chest, Although im not quite sure which one featured the music, but i admit, that was a spectacular moment aswel

I agree, that was one of the best moments of the game. Big kudos to the T-Rex too :jmp:

Yes, you're right.. But thinking about it, standing on its head was much more chilling than simply at its feet :p I'll still go with your moment, besides my own from Colisseum ;)
I'm going with when you first enter the main chamber of st. Francis' Folly and look down. There's an excellent screenie of it floating about on the net somewhere, I must see if I can find it.
1. The part in Palace Midas where you're running around all over the place, trying to get to that last gold bar, and the game takes you right back to the beginning of the level, only now you're up on a ledge that was impossible to get to before.
2. Diving to the bottom of that water filled room in Sanctuary of the Scion and swimming back up
3. Floating crocodiles!
sanctuary of the scion in the big water area:jmp:
yup that 2d sprite skeleton was cool and also bacon Lara made me jump from my seat.
Actually all Atlantis was one big stand out moment (pulsing meaty walls etc)
-The central area in the pyramide where you gradually climb to the top.
-Sanctuary of the Scion in the room with the sphinx and the one with the giant statues.
-When you enter the Lost Valley after the skeleton with the medipack.

I agree, the two underwater statues in the Sanctuary of the Scion are spectacular. They're the highlight of that level for me :D Swimming all the way down and then looking back up it seems impossible.
The Neptune room in St.FF. When I was younger, the idea of it terrified me. All the claustrophobia and being pushed down the huge tunnel...
Most of Atlantis stands out to me, especially at the start when the lights flicker on and reveal all the pulsing incubators :P Also the Great Pyramid, with the axes, boulders, spikes, crumbly floors and lava one after the other, culminating in the big drop into the tiny pool of water surrounded by fire @_@
The mummy in the Tomb of Qualopec as well. x3
I don't know why, I also really love the garden area in Palace Midas. It was so pretty and I didn't even realise there was a lever hidden in there until about 6 months ago =P

That is mine as well. Beautifully stated. :)
The music from TR1 is the best! It gives me the creeps! That's definitely the thing which made me love the game (among other things, like the sphinx in Sanctuary of the Scion, and of course, the Lost Valley)
I've thought about it for a while, and I think my favourite moment is escaping the crumbling Tomb of Qualopec to that music.

Thats easy:
TR1, the very first of all levels in Peru when I discovered that Lara could swim&dive and was supposed to do so to find secret rooms, escape enemies etc.
It was the first time for me swimming&diving was an integral, working part of a game and I was SOOO darn impressed that I had to take a break from actually playing and just toyed around in that pool (the one where the bear had shown up).

i'd have to say the music on palace midas when u see the hand, also turnin into gold stood otu
Horus and Seth were veeeeeeery colossal!! I was wowed!
Probably escaping from Atlantis, but I adored the pool/lake at the top of one of the rooms in Palace Midas. :D

Was that the really shallow channel? I always wondered why they didn't just make her run in it. And then TR2 came out x3
Probably standing inside the beginning of the Caves level. Instant love on a CD. :D

You mean me? :D
As for my most stand out moment... That would be T-Rex. Definitely. I remember everyone that played that part that didn't expect it, would jump out of their seats. Also, the Abomination in Great Pyramid was awesome, too.

In order from beginning of the game through to the end and NOT best to worst.
1 - UNCOVERING THE LOST VALLEY
2 - THE FMV BEFORE ST FRANCIS FOLLEY
3 - STANDING ATOP THE FOLLEY LOOKING DOWN
4 - DISCOVERING THE HUGE AREA IN THE COLOSSEUM
5 - THE 3RD LEAD BAR IN PALACE MIDAS THAT TAKES YOU ON A TRIP ACROSS THE WHOLE LEVEL
6 - SWIMMING DOWN THAT EXTREMELY FAST & LONG TUNNEL ON THE TOMB OF TIHOCAN
7 - THE HORSE ON TOMB OF TIHOCAN
8 - THE AMAZEMENT OF UNCOVERING THE MAIN OBELISK ROOM WITH THE BRILLIANT ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC AND CLIMBING TO THE TOP AND DIVING OF THE TOP INTO THE WATER. ALSO AT THE END MARVELLING AT THE TUNNEL THAT TOOK YOU BACK TO LEVEL 10 WHERE THE DOORS TO LEVEL 12 WERE. FROM 10 TO 11 TO 10 TO 12 AND ALL BEAUTIFULLY LINKED UP.
9 - DROPPING DOWN INTO THE HUGE CHAMBER FILLED WITH WATER AND THE DEPTH OF IT ON SANCTUARY OF THE SCION
10 - THE AMAZING (at the time) FMV BEFORE NATLAS MINES
11 - FALLING OF THE TOP OF THE GREAT PYRAMID WHERE THE BOSS IS AND HEARING LARA SCREAM 3 TIMES
12 - COMPLETION AND LOOKING BACK ON ALL THAT I HAD DONE AS THE CREDITS WERE ON THE SCREEN REALIZING THAT I HAD NEVER GONE THROUGH A GAME SO ENGROSSING, SO LONG WITH SO MANY STAND OUT MOMENTS AND SITTING BACK IN MY CHAIR IMAGINING WHAT A TOMB RAIDER 2 WOULD BE LIKE!

I liked how the beast would smack you against the ground and Lara's body would go limp. Then he'd kind of rattle you like a baby rattle.
In the statue room in the Sanctuary of the Scion, I've always called the two statues Akasha and Enkle. At the time I played TR 1 I was chest deep into the Ann Rice novels about Lestat and all his vampire buddies. The third book introduces the first Egyptian gods/vampires. Their names (Akasha and Enkle) stuck with me and hense I transfered them to the two statues in the game.
I'd highly recommend the book Queen of the Damned to anyone who likes good writing and a well written fictional history of vampires. I found it engrossing.
To me, many of the moments in TR stand out because for the first time in I don't know HOW long it was ME exploring..... fighting..... and dieing. The very first fall off of St' Francis' Folly was a long lonely fall. Yup Lara screamed, but after the fall and requisit thud I got a sense of utter aloneness. No one will find my body for maybe another millenia. No one knows where I am. No one except a very few priveleged folk even knows this place exists.
Can't forget the Rex
I remember being amazed at the level design in Midas Palace. Following your way along the nooks and crannies of the aquaduct was amazing. The same with different aspects of the Egyptian levels. I love how certain areas of one level were seen while playing another. Brilliant design.
Tehoken's centaurian horsemen outside his resting place. You knew as you walked up to the doorway that something wasn't right about them. And you loved CORE for the feeling!!!!! When you heard the resultant whinneying of the horses and hoof beats after the explosion you took a hard gulp for the battle about to ensue.
The only area of TR1 I didn't like were the small gold coloured rooms that you climbed, moved blocks and tried to find your way out by moving the blocks in a certain pattern to get to the opening before the great pyramid. With every other area being so grand in scale these rooms seemed but an afterthought in level design. I've blocked most of that part out.
TR 1 is my favorite gaming moment of all time. It's ability to plant a player into these environments and into a heroine like Lara has yet to be matched for me.

Another one for me is when one first enters the Coliseum area. The combination of the view and the sounds make for an indescribable moment. A moment that Anniversary sorely lacked. The original game was remarkable in producing these types of sensory highlights.
^Yep that is probably my favorite. Well it's not really fair to pick just one but I guess that the winner has to be either :
- Entering the Colosseum area for the first time with "Beautiful and Mysterious" in the background
- Entering the Cistern area for the first time the main theme in the background
- Finding the Midas room in Palace Midas
- Finding Tihocan's mausoleum
- Entering the vertical room in St.Francis Folly
To this day I think no levels in any of the other games have even touched the brilliancy of the Greek levels in TR1 (TRA being an exception to a certain extent).

My favourite too! But seeing how high it was, my instincs said to jump backwards off the top and kill lara! :mis:
So many moments. Every two steps I seemed to have a stand out moment when I first played TR1. I'm not exaggerating... the experience was literally awesome - so many beautiful sights and gorgeous music, and most importantly a real sense of being inside this world searching around.
And not just any old world either... a world like a combination of the Jason and the Argonauts and Indiana Jones films - anything could happen and everything was so mysterious.
But I got most tingles from...
Standing at the top of St Francis's Folly (with music).
Stepping out into the central watery bit of the Cistern (with just the right music again).
The door closing behind me right at the start of the game and facing a silent, empty snowy cave with wolf footprints.
The gorgeous Obelisk of Khamoon central structure.
Finding the Lost Valley even before the T rex turned up... it felt so creepy and strange.
Probably The Lost Valley. I was amazed to see something like that and the fact I was able to explore this 'ancient' place was just amazingly cool for me :D
The T-Rex... THE milestone of my gaming years

The first 3 seconds of the game....!
In addition to the T-Rex (who can forget a giant lizard comming at them from the darkness), I must say the garden in the Palace Midas area was beautiful, and I was very disappointed that it didnt make it into Anniversary.

When the two Atlantean statues came to life in Tichocan's tomb. Pretty damn creepy. That, and leaving Qualopec's tomb to encoutner Larson. I didn't know what to expect at the time.

what i loved was seeing the two statues in the underwater lake in Sanctuary of the Scion :D
i also liked the ascension of the pyramid of atlantis
hmm... the other underwater lake in tomb of tihocan was impressive...
There are a lot, one in every level, but my faves are the giant hammer in the St francis folly, and turning into gold in Palace Midas.

The wrapped-up skeleton in the caves level was also shocking to me, I was about 6 or 7 at the time though so it didn't take much. Also when I first sneaked and played in the Lost Valley. My dad was playing the game at the time and when he left the room I just picked up the controller and started playing.
For me had to be in The Colosseum where you run into Pierre a few times. We had met him in the Folly & saw him with the lions at the beggining of the level but after opening a few doors I said to my sister 'we havn't seen the man for a while' we called him 'The man' as we didn't know his name then & all of a sudden her was on the other side fireing at us! We both shouted 'Ah! It's the man, shoot shoot, its the man!' A very nasty suprise for us, we both spoke too soon! I think by the time Tomb Raider was just getting interesting & I can still remember the excitment of going into a new level!

It's strange, but those moments with Pierre, combined with the incredible atmosphere in the Coliseum, the perfect sense of visiting a long-lost facility and the huge size of the place made for a magical experience. And your point about entering a new level and the excitement associated with that hits home with me as well. :D I did not get any of that with Anniversary.
The game will always hold a special place in gaming history. A complete treasure in every game component, and I might add in every conceivable way.
I remember how Qualopec skeleton with it's mummies scared me then :D It was very impressive then 1996 :tmb:
