View Full Version : Just getting into FPS, what are some good games?
Recently after trying out the Half Life 2 demo(PC) and the COD 3 demo on Xbox360, I'd like to try more FPS. Does anyone know of any good FPS on the Xbox 360? My PC graphics card needs an upgrade(Nvidia 6800 GT) to play most of the FPS out there, so for now I'm stuck with the 360. Ones that have good multiplayer are a plus as my sister likes to play too.:)
Bioshock! I heard it's a must try game.

Your 6800GT can play all the greats. Quake 4, Doom3, Painkiller, FarCry, Prey, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the list goes on and on. I'd definitely play Quake 4 and RtCW, they're a blast.
Bioshock just goes beyond expectations... I daresay it's a masterpiece.

I'll definitly give those a try thanks, as well as Bioshock on the 360. I'd really like to upgrade my video card, everything else on my computer is pretty good except the graphics card :hea:
Nosferatu; No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.
aliens vs predator 1,2
postal 2
prey
farcry
medal of honor
Call of Duty 4 definitely! :tmb:
And if you like slower-paced more strategic FPSs get Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
Halo 1
Powerslave/Exhumed
All current-gen FPS sides those are my most sincere suggestions.
Halo 3. Absolutely fantastic multiplayer. Its Singleplayer is ok but not great. If you have Xbox Live its a must have game. If you dont have XBL then dont get it. Then again thats the case with most FPS games nowdays, with Bioshock being an exception. Bioshock is a great game and has one of the better SP FPS experiences but it has no multiplayer.
FarCry & Prey.
If you're feeling adventurous then Dark Messiah. :cln:
Halo 3 is easily the best single player out of the three (don't let people's rose tinted specs tell you any different!) The first is bland and repetative (the second half of the game is literally the first half in reverse!) The second game is just blah!
Bioshock, as everyone has said, is awesome. HL2 orange box brilliant (Portal was such an unexpected treat). Call of Duty 4, magnificant single and multi-player. I enjoyed Prey, although it is far from a brilliant game. Stay away from Quake 4, especially the 360 version and its awfull frame rate. The Far Cry port to 360 is also crap. R6 Vegas 2 is good if you want something a bit different from the usual run-and-gun.
Bioshock.
I would recommend CoD4 too, damn I loved the rappage of my Language in that game.
Crysis
Call Of Duty 4
Bioshock
:)

Doom, the original (I play on the PS1, because of the speed and the cool music)

I DEFINITELY recommend:
The Orange Box (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box). Fanatical fun! :tmb: It includes Half-life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Half-life 2: Episode 1.
Bioshock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioshock) Whoa  talk about BRILLIANT!! It's a superb game, and had a LOT of excellent reviews!
I might get Bioshock after I beat some of the other games I've gotten over the past weeks, I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the games I haven't beaten yet!
I went out last week and bought Call of Duty 3 along with Oblivion and some others...so I have alot of keep me busy for now. Thanks for the suggestions!
I'd like to try The Orange Box but have heard that its MUCH better on PC, is this true?

No, apart from controls its identical. I've played through HL2 on pc when it was released and again on 360 and I found the 360 more fun (probably thanks to the 42" screen and the comfort of playing in bed :))
unreal tournament 3 is currently the best fps closely followed by call of duty 4 and crysis. bio shock is awful i have only played the demo and i found my self wondering wy am i killing all these mental patients, they wernt scary just sad

The same reason you are fighting in a mortal tournament in UT3. :p
Do...not...let... Half-Life pass you by. Half-Life 2, and the 2 episodes for it that are currently out are not to be missed.
Unreal Tournament, UT2004 and UT3
Half Life 1+2
Quake 1-3
Deus Ex
Doom 1-3
Aliens Versus Predator 1+2
Thats pretty much all you need in terms of FPS games!!
If you're new to FPS games you might want to check out the Unreal series. You can pick up the Unreal Anthology (Unreal, Unreal Tournament (UT), Unreal 2, and UT2004) as a set, and now the games are also available on STEAM. Unreal came out in 1998, so I guarantee your graphics card can handle it. Unreal was the first FPS I played all the way through, primarily because it had Game Speed control adjustment in the menus, and I didn't have to find cheat codes to play the game at a speed I could handle. I'm not sure many people play Unreal or Unreal Tournament online any more, but UT2004 is a great multiplayer game that still has an online community (TR forum members get together for matches too).
A modern game that is on the XBox 360 is FEAR. The game is slow enough so using a controller to aim and shoot isn't too much of a hassle (I even played FEAR on the 360 and had no problems). This game has the most entertaining enemies you will ever fight. Unfortunately the long section in the office might get tedious, but it's still a fun game.
If you just got Oblivion, this should keep you busy for a while. I just started it yesterday (3rd time, never finshed it my first 2 attempts), so I'm interested in seeing how long it takes to finish.
No One Lives Forever 1 and 2. Absolutely. :tmb:
Very humorous and fun but sometimes it takes itself a bit too unseriously.
Go with Call of Duty 4 :tmb:

I only play on the PC, so I have no idea what good 360 FPS's are. Besides, I'm of the opinion that consoles are rubbish for FPS's unless you can attach a mouse and keyboard to it. :3
Anything with http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/6201/unreallogozt4.png in the title
Deus Ex (the original, not Invisible War. Will run on almost any PC made in the last ten years :p)
Call Of Duty 4
Thief 3 (no guns; you get a bow & arrow, dagger and club instead)
Halo (any of them)
Half Life 1 & 2 (check out the mods for them too)
Portal
Anything labelled as a product of Tom Clancy (generic USA vs Terrorists stuff, good timewasters)
Ward Dragon

I haven't played too many FPS games. Unreal and Half-Life were great. I also enjoyed Deus Ex (which had many RPG elements). DarkWatch was pretty good on the original Xbox, although I think the final series of boss battles was ridiculous and I didn't like the checkpoint saves. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was a great game, although not entirely FPS (there were FPS elements along with 3rd person adventure elements).

I just got to the point where I can't find anymore quests to do pre-expansion (as in, without going into Shivering Isles) in any of the major cities, and my character has 100 hours on the play clock, to give you an idea of how long it takes to "finish". With Oblivion, "finish" is a relative term really. When I say finish I mean completing the main quest storyline, and becoming the leader of all the factions you can join in the game, as well as doing every side quest you find within major cities or from minor exploration. I'm sure theres tons more left to do in Tamriel, but I'm starting Shivering Isles quests now.
Thanks guys for the suggestions!

I now have a total of 9 level 40+ characters. And I played each one through all of the main quests (guilds as well) and all the way through Shivering Isles. In fact I just started another one, this time trying a Nord spellcaster (should be interesting and challenging).
But I play the game in 3rd person mode most of the time, only really use first person to shoot arrows or grab specific objects.

I've just started the first oblivion gate and have gotten to the blood-something chamber and have been running around trying to find where to go next and i'm not making any progress so i'm taking a break and going to play COD3.
