Who here agrees that its completely unfair that the only way to get all these video game updates and add ons is through things like Xbox live? So many people (such as myself) don't have access to high speed internet. Would it kill them to offer to sell update cds to those people? Sorry, they just released the first downloadable content for Mass Effect. :(

is the stuff probably available through magazine discs?

I'm afraid its the net that makes these downloadable 'episodes' possible. With the cost of producing the cds and distribution the add-ons have to be priced higher and so we would expect more for our money (which is what we get with expansion packs of old). The net has meant we now get small extra levels and multiplayer maps more regularly and for a lower price (although, in my opinion, what they charge for a trio of maps is a bit over the top. Considering its us fans buying the games that make them such a success it would be nice if we got a free treat once in a while, but that's expecting a little bit too much of Microsoft now isn't it! - Anyway, i digress).
I'm afraid you'll just need to join the online revoloution as soon as possible

One question, do Xbox360 users get system updates like Playstation 3 owners do?

Yes, but you don't understand. If it were possible for me to get high speed in my area I would already have it. But its not. They refuse to run a line. I know tons of other people who have the same problem. Its just not fair that these updates are only available to people who live in the city. I understand that it would be expensive to make cds but there must be some other way.

the truth is, it would be cheaper to leave your computer on all night while your downloading this stuff, than it would be to hop on the bus to your local high street and buy a CD package.

you think youre paying more, but in reality....

You can't even get xbox live period unless you have high speed so I can't even start the download to let go all night. I would if it would let me.

You should have think about that before buying a console. Because next-gen mean online. I won't buy a huge HD TV if I'm blind.

I'm on dial-up. If anyone tells me to just get high speed internet I snap back and say -well pay my phone bill! :ohn:

:vlol:

Or I could buy a laptop and leech off of wi-fi hotspots in town. :whi:

But for gaming systems... I can see why that'd be a problem. What? They think everyone has high-speed internet? That's discrimination! Some people can't help it. Or, if they're like me, think their phone bill is already outrageously high. $58.00 a month. :hea:

Murphy - over here it's cheaper to have a 512kb - 8mb broadband package than to be on dialup. Where are you? Countryside?

Yeah, broandband connections are becoming cheaper by the time. I have a 2MB connection for R$49,50 (US$28,54).

Without MS and Sony insisting on users having broadband they could not advertise a reasonable good online experience to their customers. You simply couldn't play todays' games on dial-up; heck, even broadband can be a problem depending on the individuals' connection.

Anyway; there's always things that seem unfair but you just gotta deal with it, especially when there's a good reason for it being that way. Perhaps the better question to ask is why isn't high-speed internet in your area yet? Unless you literally live on the edge of the wilderness, I think you have every right to question that. Ask your cable company, your local politicians, whomever.

I'm betting you'll be able to get that Mass Effect content on a disc at some point anyway...

The very best WTF was something EA managed to do in Germany. There are two expansion packs for Battlefield 2 that can only be bought via the internet (I think there are also some that can be bought in stores, but I forgot). As credit cards aren't as common in Germany as they are in the US, EA decided to offer a boxed version of them here.

The box did not contain a disc. At all. Instead it contained a code which allowed you download the content, even though you just bought a box.

If there was a Daily WTF (http://thedailywtf.com/) site for games, this would probably be a top story.

Back to the topic at hand: Nothing one can really do about it. The number of people who have no broadband is getting lower every day, and that decreases the incentive to offer a disc version of, well, anything. That's not a good user experience for the ones who can't get broadband, but unless you can convince more people not to have broadband, you probably won't get very far with protests.

I guess whats really unfair is that people in my area can't get dsl. :( Its not like I live on the moon. Its just kinda like the area where I live has been overlooked. A friend of mine actually did call somebody about it. They said that the only way they would let us have dsl is if we could prove that enough people would use it for them to make a profit. I guess the thing to do is start a petition.

LOL, guess the boxes were cheaper to make than the discs, good to see EA are still keeping a closer eye on their customer's needs than their profit margins! :whi:

Keep the faith, a friend of mine couldn't get any broadband for a long time, then one day BAM it was available at 8mb. Now he takes days off work at a time to play COD4 multi-player, his social life out side of that game has disappeared, but that's a different matter all together.

I spent 5 years begging my phone company to give me DSL, but because I was 6 miles too far from the nearest hub, Dialup was the only internet available. The only way I was able to solve that situation, was to move.

Its just too expensive to install a DSL hub if they don't think enough subscribers in the area would make it profitable.
