Internal issues take mega-sites offline

Akamai (http://www.akamai.com/index_flash.html), a hosting provider to some of the web's largest properties, experienced an outage this morning caused by a "bug within one of Akamais backend content control management tools", according to the company. The outage, which was originally thought to be the result of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, knocked a number of massive sites like Ebay, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo - temporarily off-line. Google news (http://news.google.com/news?q=akamai&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&tab=wn&scoring=d) offers a cookie cutter report released by a large number of NBC affiliate news sites that were also taken offline by the outage, which has now been restored (see this SANS report (http://isc.sans.org/)). According to Akamai (see overview (http://www.akamai.com/en/html/technology/overview.html)), the company handles about fifteen percent of the total traffic on the web and has approximately 1,000 clients.
