Windows Vista automatically comes with Windows Defender which is anti spyware, although I suggest you download Spyboy search and destroy and Ad-Aware.

For the firewall, Vista comes with one in-built. Go to your control panel and choose security and then check Windows Firewall is on.

Windows firewall is crap IMO better get:
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/znalm/comparison.jsp)

Personally, I prefer letting Windows Firewall by default, because having an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware is already enough to protect a PC ! ;)

^and you aren't concerned about someone hacking into your computer and stealing personal/work related information. Windows firewall is not enough to protect against this type stuff. You really want your PC to be "invisible".

Vista firewall has improved over XP firewall..

anyway I personally tried with satisfactory results (so far) at least 2 other free firewalls in Vista, namely :

Comodo Firewall Pro free 3.0

and

PC Tools Firewall Plus 3.00.60

Zone Alarm is not recommended for Vista. It is not compatible.

Tried that too and in fact I didn't mention it because it had been creating some problems :o

I wouldn't go as far as declaring it not compatible though.

It's definitely not compatible with 64-bit versions and Servers for now http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

Hope it'll be fixed soon, at least 64-bit compatibility...

Yep

I keep forgetting that because I'm using 32 bit that doesn't mean everybody will always be talking about 32 bit only and no other ;)

No, not really. Because I am not browsing the deep applications and I do not put personal informations anywhere, so I'm feeling confident, and like I said : Windows's version Firewall + Antivirus + AntiSpyware = is already sufficient for me :)

^here's an interesting subject for you. I can boot into linux, and open Firestarter (the GUI frontend for the iptables firewall) and sit back and watch as the firewall constantly blocks incoming packets. I don't have to be browsing anything - nor do you. The fact that you are connected to your internet service provider is enough to make you susceptible to hacking. Even though you don't have a browser window, P2P application, or online game etc. open doesn't mean you aren't "online". With broadband connections like DSL and Cable, the connection is always active - thus the need for a GOOD firewall or NAT router.

Speaking of NAT routers. If you have one, it acts as a hardware firewall, negating the need for a software firewall - unless you have a notebook that you are always taking to the local coffee shop to browse the net with. In that case, the software firewall will protect against someone else connected to the hotspot, as well as protecting you in the event that the hotspot has its WAN ports open.

I’m fine with Windows Firewall and my NAT router.

^ Are you sure? :)
Go read the logs and you'll be less confident...

Actually being safe is:

constant bugtrack reading
altering firewall settings
updating firewall/antivirus/antispyware

Windows Firewall is a ridiculous caricature of a firewall
