LONDON (Reuters) - A Welsh race-car driver claimed the first milk float speed record after zooming at 73 miles (118 km) per hour in a souped-up electric machine.

Electric milk vans, called "floats", were designed decades ago to run in silence, so the legend goes, to avoid waking slumbering people when the milkman drops off pints of milk at dawn.

The floats have not been known for their speed until Welsh Formula 3 racer Richard Rozhon got behind the wheel of his brand new Electron E150 on a track at the Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in the Midlands.

Rozhon was at something of a loss to describe the experience on Thursday.

"It`s a radical designed futuristic vehicle," he told Reuters by telephone. "Something sort of out of the space age. It`s a futuristic looking milk float."

Rozhon said he set the speed mark with no milk bottles on board, but guessed it could go nearly as fast when fully loaded.

Another team tried to set a record in a conventional float on the same day but barely got to 50 mph.

And I always get stuck behind the one doing 5mph! Just my luck.

Hi,

Your right about one thing:- milk floats were almost silent, designed so that milkmen could not be heard coming or going!

;)

You seem to remember Ernie, perhaps it's time for you to retire.

In my dreams only another 30 years unless they change the retirement age.

And the classic songs of yester year oh what joy.

Does anyone remember the Father Ted episode, "Speed"? It had the bomb on the milk float that Father Dougal was driving, and if the float dropped below 5 mph, the bomb would go off! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
