Hello TR Forum chicks:

It's me Rae from Our Lady Lara Croft. I'm doing an article on the female demographic reading comics. Most publications focus on the boys and I'd like to focus on the women reading comics.
Here are the questions:

1) Do you feel that comic books have changed in the past few years regarding its portrayal of women?

2) What comics do you read? Which do you recommend?

3) Which comics do you believe to be downright offensive?

4) What would you change about the comic book industry today?

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Rae

Hello Rae, welcome to the forum http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

The most popular sections have their own forum http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Guess someone should answer the questions... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

1) Do you feel that comic books have changed in the past few years regarding its portrayal of women?
Yes! And to the better!

2) What comics do you read? Which do you recommend?
Only one and that's Nemi. It's in the strip-format and is totally awesome!! Now there's a strong female character everyone and anyone can see themselfs in! Lise Myhre (creator) is truely a genious! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

3) Which comics do you believe to be downright offensive?
Um, as I said, only read one and that is only pure pleassure to read!

4) What would you change about the comic book industry today?
Not even remotely close to being an expert on the subject, but there should be more stuff that people can relate to and things should have a more or less obvious punchline which reflects a healthy point of view towards life and daily events. (such as Nemi) :D

I'm no female, but the only comic book adaption I find very offensive happend to be a upcoming X-men spin-off involving the late Princess Diana. To put it direct, the Comic show high disregard for a well-known public figure that died a violent death. You read about it here (http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,12121,00.html)

Here are my answers:

1) Do you feel that comic books have changed in the past few years regarding its portrayal of women?
Yes they have.

2) What comics do you read? Which do you recommend?
I both read and recommend the following comics:
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider Journeys
Witchblade
Those are the ones I get on a monthly basis. There are others I'll pick up once in awhile but these are the biggies with me.

3) Which comics do you believe to be downright offensive?
Ahh...I can't give any by name since I don't buy the offensive ones.
One of the things I find offensive is if they depict too much blood and guts and gore in them.
Those I try to avoid.

4) What would you change about the comic book industry today?
Get more women involved in the production end of the industry as well as in the artwork and storylines.

I have the first 16 Tomb Raider comics which I adore and wish I could have bought more, but I have babies to take care of! I think they are beautiful, albeit depicting Lara a bit too sexy. And since when does Lara have RED hair? Even a male friend in the comics has given her the nickname "Red." Anyway, I am sorry I am not answering all of your questions. I do think Tomb Raider is a good comic for women, but it was definitely designed to appeal to the boys.

Thanks for the replies and for the nice welcomes!I'll have to spread the word about my upcoming comic community geared toward female readers (of course, the boys are allowed too!)
