That date is not contemplated by the Mayas. However, many websites talk about a day of cataclysms, other mention the end of the world, but other keep telling that it could be a day were the human race will reborn, and new horizons will overspread. Somebody talks about the advent of a new civilization, like at the beginning of the previous cycle of life (our is the fifth, started in 3114 AD) with the coming of Sumerians.

Actually no! The world WILL end. That much is inevitable. You should say "the odds of the world ending at that precise date must be like a trillion to one"

Even so, that's probably not true, since statistically speaking, there must be equal probabilities of any event whatsoever happening at any given day, and that includes a catastrophe. But whatever.

The only way other than that, would be self-destruction (mankind destroying itself). Even though perhaps the planet would survive such a thing (although very diferent from what we know now, possibly sterile?), our race would be extinguished meaning in fact the end of our world.

I think this is very probable, but not in a single one day event (unless old Cold War fears of nuclear apocalypse come true, we never know). I think we're doing it slowly, and the process of our own destruction will take many decades to be complete.

If it's an astronomic phenomenon, wouldn't the astronomers already know about it? They can predict those types of movements.

From Wikipedia.

Despite the publicity generated by the 2012 date, Susan Milbrath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012.[13]

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. in Crystal River, Florida. To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

We would most likely not get swallowed up in it, the black hole in the center of the galaxy is too far away from the earth. We live on the very edge of this galaxy.

We might even turn the gas on in the fireplace. Then we will get tired of conversation and go to bed. actually the poles are already starting to "wander". the north pole is moving its way twords Russia. this is causing problems navigating old coordinates by compass because magnetic north (the pole) is moving. its one of the reasons why if you buy a gps you can set it to read magnetic north or "true" north. within half a century (so 50 years) magnetic north will be some where in siberia.

oh and if i remember correctly there has been a polar shift, or flip flop as it were, roughly 800,000 years ago and its happened many times before that.

However, I think it may just be a normal day. 50:50 I think.

And btw, it is December 12.

I SAID it`s December 12 but Jude told me its 21! XD

According to italian Wikipedia:

Secondo i maya, ciascun ciclo del Lungo computo corrisponde ad un'era del mondo; il passaggio da un'era all'altra è segnato da catastrofi e distruzioni. Il ciclo attualmente in corso è iniziato il 6 settembre del 3114 a.C. ed è molto vicino al termine: il nuovo ciclo inizierà il 22 dicembre 2012.

It says that each cycle of life coincides with a world era; when this occurs, an episode of catyclism and disaster will happen. The actual cycle began on September, 6th 3114 AD and it's going to end on December, 22nd 2012.

Look here too: http://www.december212012.com/ ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11iCmzGnOI8 ; http://www.dougbrittonbooks.com/onlinebiblestudies-newagespiritualwarfare/mayancalendarprediction-december212012.asp

It seems there are both the 12 and the 22, but the exact one is the 22 (at least EVERY Italian website tells so).

There has been a lot of controversy and debate over the issue of December 21, 2012 being the "End of the World". People have been basing this on Mayan Prophecies and the fact that the Mayan Calendar ends on the above-mentioned date.

The reality of this is that people have misunderstood and misinterpreted the Mayan Philosophies and the workings of the Mayan Calendar. This is something that has upset a lot of Mayans.

If you speak to the Mayans, as I have done, they will tell you that indeed, 2012 is the end of the world. They will also tell you that this will be the fifth time the world has ended, and that the world ends every 5125 years. In other words, it is not a literal translation. In fact, the Mayans explain this as meaning the end of one era and the beginning of a new era. They do say that during this time there will be major changes in the Earth and its inhabitants, but not an actual destruction of the physical planet.

So, the Question is why every 5125 years?

In order to answer this question, one has to understand the workings of the Mayan Calendar, and the reasoning and science behind it. In fact, you also need to know the Mayan perception of time.

Most people perceive time as a straight line, moving ever forward. Mayans perceive time as a circle, "What has happened will happen". Even though this statement pertains to a Mayan philosophy about events in history, it also has a bigger meaning from which the statement originated. The bigger meaning pertains to cycles in nature and in the universe, as understood in Mayan astronomy. And this perception of time is the first building block for the Mayan Calendar.

The Mayan Calendar is actually three calendars working as one, kind of like three cogged wheels. These calendars are known as the Tzolkin, the Haab, and the Long Count.

The Tzolkin, also known as the Mayans' Religious or Spiritual Calendar, is 260 days long. It measures the Mayan 20 day weeks of which there are 13. (NOTE: The year marked by the Tzolkin is not incorporated in the Mayan date).

The Haab, also known as the Mayans' Civilian or Solar Calendar, is 365 days long. It measures the months of which there are 20 (19 months have 20 days each and 1 month has 5 days in it for a total of 365 days).

These two calendars working together are known as the "Calendar Round" and create a cycle of days that do not repeat for 52 years. Incidentally, the reset of this calendar every 52 years also keeps this portion of the Mayan Date in sync with the seasons on Earth, much in the same way as our "Leap Year", only it is much more accurate.

The Long Count, also known as the "Day Count", is what the Mayans use to mark the days in the 5125 year cycle of the Mayan Calendar. Incidentally, the Mayans can tell you what day it is on the "Long Count", which is impressive due to the fact that there are 1,870,625 days in the "Long Count".

So, with these three calendars working together as one Mayan Calendar, no date on this calendar repeats itself for 5125 years (then the process starts over again).

Now back to the question, "Why 5125 years?"

This is because the Mayan Calendar is not based on the Sun and the Moon. Though it uses the Sun and the Moon in part of its workings, the Mayan Calendar is actually based on the time it takes our Milky Way Galaxy to make a complete orbit around the Pleiades Cluster. It is a mystery as to why they chose this phenomenon as a basis for a calendar or how they even knew about it.

So, will we still be here after 2012?

More than likely, the answer is yes. And we may be witness to some really interesting things in the process.

The last time the Mayan Calendar came to an end was 3113 B.C. This puts it around the time of the "Great Flood", which is spoken of, not only in the Bible, but also in Mayan History and other cultures as well (and mankind is still here).

Is this ending of the Mayan Calendar different from any of the previous endings?

The answer is most definitely, "Yes".

With this ending of the Mayan Calendar, our solar system will be entering the "Galactic Plain" on its journey from the topside of our galaxy to the bottoms side. This phenomenon occurs every 25625 years, which is exactly 5 cycles of the Mayan Calendar. With 2012 being the 5th ending to the Mayan Calendar, you can count back and find that the very first cycle of the Mayan Calendar began with our solar system in the "Galactic Plain" on its journey from the bottom side of the galaxy to the topside.

"What has happened will happen".

In New Mexico, Scully and Mulder arrive at a pueblo where a dying Cigarette Smoking Man is hiding out to survive the colonization — an event that will happen on December 22, 2012. This corresponds to a significant date in the Mayan Calendar — perhaps the end of the world. Outside, Reyes and Doggett face off against Rohrer, who has been sent to kill Mulder and the Smoking Man.

And to the other person, the Mayans were around. They were some civilization and they had an amazing knowledge about the stars and shizz like that.

According to Wikipedia and other sites I've seen, on this day "21st December, 2012" is supposed to be when the sun sits in one unusual space in time with the galaxy or it has some connection to the milky way thing, and then they came up with two solutions of what will happen.

The first was that the sun will open up a gate when in this position it will wipe away all hatred and fear, leaving a peaceful world, apparently. But this I don't understand, how can you forget how to hate if we already have hated? What if someone killed your mother on the 20th of December, the day before, and you walked up to him the day after shaking his hand, hugging him?? Impossible.

Anyway, the other theory is, yeah, the end of the world theory.

kooky
12-05-08, 21:53
I also have another thing to say, the prediction from the Mayans on 12-22-2012 was the beginning of a New Age cycle, Pieces changing to Ares the Ram again, they did not predict the end of the World, no one knows when the world will end, it could end the next day, next few hours, next week, next month, next year, next century, but no one truly knows when it will end. Christians believe that Christ will return this day to banish all wicked & Evil off the face of the earth & save the good people.

Honestly I don't know what to think about, I don't want the world to end but at the same time they seemed to know what they were talking about, and they were pretty smart. I guess we will all just wait and see.

I heard that as well in 2029 there is supposed to be a fly by of a comet/meteor then 10 years later it is supposed to hit with devastating effects but I also heard there was a miscalculation and it isn't going to hit us but I am not sure

The world is not going to end on that date. Here's an article about what the Mayans really think about it.

2012: The End of the World, but not Literally
An article by John W. Reeves III

There are several speculations that span this world as to the meaning of that day.

1. Reverse Rotation
- In other words, the Earth's axis will begin to spin in the opposite direction, quite possibly resulting in violent and drastic climate changes. Possible destruction, but not necessarily the end of our species.

2. Destruction
-Quite possibly the most popular. Basically, the apocalypse. However, according to raging enthusiasts, if all the mythical crystal skulls left behind, and scattered by the Mayans are reunited, it may reverse the effects of the oncoming apocalypse. Some have already been retrieved. So they are not that mythical, but in fact, real.

3. Rare astrological alignment
-It is speculated that the earth and solar system will directly align with the center of the galaxy...I do not remember what that meaning may be.

4. The Beginning
-Marks the day that humanity will enter the dawn of a new era. It may not be an apocalypse, it may be the end of the world we know, but the beginning of a new one as well. This idea may be correlated with the drastic change brought upon by a reverse rotation (if it were to occur)

5. No Space Left
-The Mayans simply ran out of space...or died before completing it.

I hope this was helpful...:wve: I for one am not worried.

- In other words, the Earth's axis will begin to spin in the opposite direction, quite possibly resulting in violent and drastic climate changes. Possible destruction, but not necessarily the end of our species.

This will not happen by natural means. If it were to happen, everything on Earth would be thrown into space at speeds none of it would survive. The entire planet would fracture and possibly explode.

The only destruction Earth has to worry about is self inflicted, that of a major impact event, the death of Sol, or an attack by an outside force of artificial means. None of which is even a tiny bit likely.

3. Rare astrological alignment
-It is speculated that the earth and solar system will directly align with the center of the galaxy...I do not remember what that meaning may be.

When are we not aligned with the center of the galaxy?

That is how the Mayan calendar works chief, every 5125 years our planet enters a new Age. The Age of Pisces ends in 2012.

5. No Space Left
-The Mayans simply ran out of space...or died before completing it.

I don't know how you can come to the conclusion a circular calendar could be unfinished when it has already gone through several revolutions.

I hope this was helpful...:wve: I for one am not worried.

I am only worried about what my fellow idiot humans will do. With any luck natural selection will prevail and I'll live in a better world.

Good to know. :wve: The majority of the info i had was based on a documentary on the history channel. I am merely stating several speculations that exist so these aren't my theories. And no the solar system isn't always PERFECTLY aligned with the center of the galaxy. As far as im concerned there it is believed that there will be a unique planetary alignment on that day. It is also stated that there is an incomplete Description left behind on the Tortuguero Monument that records that date specifically. Whether or not the calendar is finished, the information regarding that point in time is left unfinished.

I do agree that any fate that will befall this world will mostly likely be due to human interaction. And with any luck fellow idiot human beings will drag everyone down with them. Its just the way it works. ;)

What annoys me is that so far, I haven't seen a single reason for stuff happening at that date. Why would the world reverse it's rotation or do, well, just about anything out of the ordinary then? "Because dead Mayans said it had to" is anything but a scientific theory.

Immortalis08
10-07-08, 21:00
why make a calendar for so many years later?

...maybe they thought the info might help their empire in the future (they probably envisioned their empire lasting for hundreds, if not thousands of years)...although its quite ironic...the mayan culture has been severely reduced.:whi:

Cochrane- i don't remember what was the scientific explanation to the sudden reverse rotation. Honestly i don't believe anything will happen and as of yet there are no particular signs as to what will happen on that date. I just happen to be very interested in supposed doomsday topics. :D

People just fear that day because supposedly Mayans have predicted many major world events through their calendar. But its all just a matter of whether you want to believe or not. I just find this stuff fascinating.

Well, to give you the jist of it all, some of the members of the Order of the Solar Temple make their own cooky connections as to when the supposable rapture would happen. So in order to "save themselves," they performed ritual suicide to re-enact the Last Supper of Jesus Christ and his Apostles. They claimed they had all the right resources to back their predictions.

Well... I see no rapture now do I. It was a terrible tragedy.

To state in a delicate way: If you try to look hard enough for connections, you will find them. That doesn't mean however that they are accurate in any way.

And now i get your point. People are just setting themselves up to be scared. They may commit regrettable actions when in which the end clearly did not justify the means. What I think is that paranoia and despiration brings out the worse in everyone... and I do mean EVERYONE. The Mayans could possibly be talking in metaphores for all we know and the date could be an indication of a set Mayan cyclic time phase and reaching that point could be marked as the "end of a great journey."

Remember that the Mayans also believed in blood sacrifices to satisfy their gods and to call upon the vision serpent. Any volunteers?
