Hi

I'm getting a new notebook soon (Acer Aspire 8920G), but i think i'm having a problem...
There are so many people who says that you should get rid of Microsoft Windows Vista and put Microsoft Windows XP on it... But this notebook is designed for Vista.

This is the notebook:

Well, i've looked at the Acer Website and you can download there they drivers, but those are only for Vista. And since I also have a lot of programm's that runs on XP, i think i have a major problem....

Can i somehow make Vista think it runs XP games, programm's and stuff like that or is there an other way of making this work????

Is not really a problem, most drivers you see in their site its just drivers they provide from the official hardware site or OEM modified drivers and is not always updated. You can always find it in the official one and it should have for windows XP. If you stick with Vista, disabling UAC, DEP should greatly help to play most games.

Though if you want directx10, Vista is needed. Beside this, i also though about this laptop before it has a 18,6" screen, in my opinion i don't recommend laptop with screen larger then 15,4" as they look very big and also need more GPU power to perform in that resolution.

The graphics card that came with this notebook is a GeForce 9650M GS a successor to 8700M GT, is a little faster then 8700M GT but not faster then 8800M. Nevertheless its great for games :), it should be possible to play most newer games in the highest excluding Crisis lol. Though with that price (i don't know if is the one i'm imagining lol) you would have buy a better laptop.

But this notebook is designed for Vista

If you don't use DirectX 10, my advise would be to use Windows XP on it. You're not going to be able to run most DX10 games with full detail anyway on this machine and even if you could, there's nothing spectacular about the DX10 features in those games.

Ofcourse you could also install Ubuntu on it ;)

Vista only had problems when it first came out....like teething problems, y'know? They just brought it out too fast. vista should be fine :)

^ Not really, if you want to keep the majority of old programs. Total crap, if you want to keep some DOS-based programs (16-bit generally).
But it's always a personal decission which depends on the user programs choice.
I can recommend Vista SP1 64-bit - it's better than 32-bit edition :tmb:

^ Well, i don't know what version is on there: all I can say is that it has "Microsoft Vista Ultimate", so would that be included Vista SP1 64-bit??? Or the early version???

And soes they games that didn't have been designed for Vista, like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 or anything like those games, also run on Vista??? It's not on the case of the game, but would it run???

Ultimate is good (as the laptop is new mostlikely it'll include SP1) - you'll avoid many headaches in administrating it, but it is 32-bit for sure. Well with SP1 it's not as bad as without anyway :)

But i could download the 64-bit version on windows website right????
So i assume that the 64-bit is and would be better then the 32-bit version....

You'll need to buy Windows Vista 64-bit, not download. Yup, x64 version is more stable and fast than x86 (32-bit) one...

I'm sorry, i don't get it....
So I need to buy another opperation Vista System with 64-bit, if the notebook that i've bought has the 32-bit version???

^ Yup. But you can try contact the vendor/reseller, if they can provide it with Vista x64 for you (this will take a bit more $ of course).

^ Okay... Thanks you very much for all those explains... This really helped me...
Now all I can hope is that this notebook I've ordered, has the 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate....

Thanks alot EscondeR....

Better contact the reseller though, cause acording to my experience they prefer to preinstall 32-bit versions as ones having wider compatibility still (at least considered to be) :)

I will... But i don't think it would do any good, since it's already ordered..... It's already on it way... But i will contact them, just in case....

Thanks..
