Oftentimes interesting land features are difficult or impossible to distinguish in true-color images. While features like vegetation are visible in a general sense - where green generally means some sort of plant cover - the details of such features, such as vegetation density, are lost. This is where false-color images become very useful. The mouse-over of the above image of Central Africa is a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) image by the Terra MODIS instrument, acquired on May 5, 2004.

This NDVI image helps show how dense vegetation is in this region. Lighter shades of green represent sparser cover, while darker shades of green indicate heavier vegetation. Shades of yellow (image top) indicate bare land. While divergence between the true-color and NDVI image is not great, the NDVI image shows vegetation stretching farther into the northern deserts than the eye can perceive in the true-color image.

Well, I don't know anything about the technical stuff you're talking about, but I'd love to go around the African countries on a long adventure holiday one day. It's a beautiful region, in spite of the poverty.

I have never thought going there. Although I'm used to the heat, I don't think I'll be able to survive. And you... you are not used to the heat. What are you gonna do there? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

It's a beautiful region, in spite of the poverty. And in spite of warfare and kidnappings. I'd love to go to the Congo someday, but it's just too dangerous.
